Title: I'm MtF in transition and in therapy and am seeking a test
Post by: cicilia on May 11, 2018, 01:12:18 PM
A friend of mine that is also in transition mentioned that there is a test a lot of ladies take that was created by Benjamin Harris.  I didn't find it on Google.  My therapist is nice but I'm her first / only Trans patient.  I was curious about the test,  and of course she never heard of this person or the test. Has anyone ever heard of it and seen it online?  Thanks.

It sounds like you're  referring to the old Harry Benjamin standards?

There aren't any tests that determine gender if thats what youre searching for.

Someone I know told me she took a 3+ hour test based on this Harry Benjamin or Benjamin Harris or whatever and that it did a good job of identifying for her the triggers to her dysphoria.  She further said I could find the link to the test on this website.

There ade a series of question in the standards for treatment of transgender inidividuals. One of them was to determine if the person has had a long-term desire to be the opposite sex. If you google the standards for treatment, you can find it.

We have the Standards of Care right here on the site.  :)

Wpath is the standard guide used now I believe. Version 7. It's ok to read but way too medical for me.

I don't think there are any such tests. Your friend might be thinking of something like the COGIATI test, but it's not a medical test - I'd ignore it. If it's the therapist saying this I'd find another one as she's no idea what she's doing.

The official medical criteria is the DSM-5 section 302.95 (F64.1). You can find it online if you search and it's very short.

The WPATH Standards of Care is best practices for treatment of transgender people.

When I started transition in 1998, my therapist had me take The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) (which took me a couple of hours to complete) as part of my assessment for gender identity disorder under the Harry Benjamin Standards of Care.

Thanks.  I did the COGIATI online but it only said I am Transgender.  I felt like "duh - but what are all of my triggers?".  I just was wondering if I had some triggers I don't know yet. I have so many I don't want any more.

What do you mean by triggers?

Hi Cicilia,

I'm not sure what you are asking. You know you are transgender, but... what?  What are you looking for? There are no external validations for your internal perceptions any more than there are ways to invalidate what you perceive. Transgenderism is what you feel, what you know. As you already know, a "trigger" is an event or concept that leads to feelings of gender dysphoria. You know them when you experience them. You don't have to make a list.

With kindness,

Terri

Going off what Terri said, I made a list of pros and cons... I wish I still had it but now I really don't think I can go by that. Terri's right... [emoji4]

Just depends on your therapist view how serious are you about it. They don't want to look back for allow you to make wrong decision. Just remember transition is a most important decision for your life and not for anyone else, so work with your therapist about transition.

Cici, I have been searching for answers like you to find the root on my obsessions sensual in nature and one I came across with a SARA test.  Then for a fee I took a SAST Sexual Addition Screening Test and found it very informative for me.  It was after this I decided to pursue gender counseling to see what part of my obsession was gender related.  You might want to see if it may help.  From what I know now, I am somewhere on the scale between M and F.  I am very fortunate I am working with a gender specialist and meeting with a group of trans folks regularly.  After doing endless searches on the net I dont think there is a "test".  Perhaps you could find an therapist who will do Skype?  Mine offers all methods but I prefer in person.

Cicilia perhaps they meant the Harry Benjamin real life test (http://www.trans-health.com/2003/real-life-test/)?
