Post by: Arch on December 19, 2011, 11:55:26 AM

I had better luck with a hotline recently. They successfully talked me down, got me focusing on things that were positive in my life, and displayed quite an impressive intellect. After I stopped crying we talked about books for about half an hour. It's terrible that I needed it but I was so thankful that it was there as a resource for me.

In the UK there are some LGBT helplines.
I'm in Oxford so I know "Oxford Friend" 01865 726893.
I also know about "London Friend" but the best idea might be to search for "<where you live> Friend" and LGBT.

While this isn't a hotline, per se, it might be useful for anyone who doesn't have access to a phone or would prefer talking to someone online: https://www.imalive.org/

National Suicide Prevention Hotline's a joke. Don't waste your time with them. I've called them twice, with the same terrible results, and wrote about it here.

Part one: https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,159482.msg1359481.htm
and
Part two: https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,160378.msg1371742.html

NOTE: Some people have contact with poorly trained staff. Some get contact from excellent staff. Please always contact support services if you are feeling suicidal. Try another number if you are not helped. But get help. Your life is important to us.

I'm updating these stickies to incorporate some suggestions that people are making.

If you feel like volunteering, you should probably google the particular services you like and see if they are accepting volunteers. On second thought, I'll just add URLs for each service.

The Trevor Project helps people UNDER twenty-five, but I'm not sure whether the hotline contacts will even ask about your age.

P.S. Looks like I'll have to work on this in bits and pieces over the next few days. I'm triggering already. Yikes.

I volunteer for translifeline and we are always looking for volunteers to help answer calls. we are completely volunteer based and all gender nonconforming. the basis behind it is who understands transgender issues and what we are going through then on of us.

The number of calls that we have been receiving have been getting more and more, and unfortunately we lack the steady man power to answer them all.

Heyas its Yeti.  I'm usually found in the chat rooms its my social life.  But whenever someone comes in talking suicidal in some ways we give the info and sometimes local numbers if we know that person is in our area.  However I always like to mention myself so they know they are not alone and can get strong again.  I do not go into serious details however I started in 5th grade at 10 years old and intermittently tried then stopped when I was 27.  Growing up trans isn't easy on its own then my family doesn't accept me either. It really does make us stronger.  I feel its a good way to connect and show that hey I did it and so can you.  So many of us know the reality and know others we have lost to suicide.  We can also connect by mentioning those friends without too much detail of course and possibly make a difference for those in the darkest places we know well.  Sending positive energies to all have a great day, week, month, year or life if you need it!

Thanks for posting this. As someone dealing with anxiety and depression it's nice to see people like you care. I probably won't have to worry about suicide other than the occasional thought because I don't have the courage to do it.
I do cut when I lose too much control over my thoughts though...  :(
Thankfully that doesn't happen too often thanks to my meds. :)

By talking about suicide we can help prevent more of them. Remember there is always another solution.
