Title: When can I lift heavy weights?
Post by: Skyler on May 21, 2016, 09:10:05 AM
So I was looking around but there isn't a very clear answer between what defines weight lifting and body builder one told me to wait 6ish weeks the other one said for more heavy weight lifting up to 3 months? I usually lift a barbell 100-200 reps a day that is around 100lbs, how long do you think is an acceptable time to wait? I had double incision and was glued closed, no stitches and my scar is currently healed closed, I am 5 weeks post op.

Thank you!

Depends on surgeon. For mine, she said I could resume all normal exercise activities at 4 weeks post op. I've heard anywhere from 4-8 weeks post op.

Just remember, you can always build muscle back up.  Scars are forever.

Even I an incision is most of the way healed, there is possibility of tearing back open.
I would recommend asking your doctor about when you can resume heavy weights.

Muscle memory is fantastic in the response of getting back into training, so even if you do have to hold off up toward 4 months, it will be easy to rebuild. But if you accidentally tear yourself open it will take much longer to heal.
Just be careful and maybe when you do start, go at about 80% to 90% of what you are used to, so you can gauge what you can do in regards to how far yo are healed up.

I was able to do heavy repetitive lifting (50-75 lbs) at 8 weeks post D.I. when I went back to work.  My surgeon cleared me for return to normal physical activity at 4 weeks.  Did you have a one month post-op appointment?  What did your doc say about it?

I started off lightweight around a month post op but I wasn't lifting that often or even exercising for that matter. At about 4-5 months then I started lifting a lot heavier and actually exercising about 3-5 times a week (depended on my mood). I didn't want to risk stretching my scars.

My surgeon was no help for any type of home care , what to do after surgery or anything like that, all questions were just brushed offed and not really answered as well as waiting over an hour to see her for literally 60 seconds and then my appointment was over for my one month post op. I'll probably wait till about 8 weeks then from what everyone is saying here:)
