Story by Daniel Villarreal (16 April 2024)

The Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA) has filed a second lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) because the department's health benefits won't pay for former service members' gender-affirming surgeries.

The TAVA originally sued the VA in early January to force the department to consider its 2016 petition asking the VA to cover the surgeries. VA Secretary Denis McDonough — who said in June 2021 that the VA would soon cover the surgeries — declined to fulfill the petition's request. The VA has seemingly taken no steps toward covering the surgeries; McDonough said the department's rulemaking process would take at least two years to start paying for the procedures.

TAVA's new lawsuit states that the VA's refusal to cover transitional surgeries "defies clear medical consensus" and discriminates based on sex and transgender status, according to The Hill.

"Gender-affirming surgery is not a choice for many transgender individuals — it's often a critical part of our care that healthcare professionals consider medically necessary. Denying us access to these puts our lives at risk," said TAVA Vice President Josie Caballero about the new lawsuit.

"VA's refusal to provide gender-affirming surgery is an affront to the dignity and well-being of transgender veterans," Caballero added. "TAVA will not stand idly by as VA continues to discriminate against and breaks its promises to transgender veterans."

I actually prefer video conferencing with my medical professionals when what we will discuss is entirely routine.  I see my endo twice a year.  I am cool with one of those being online (as it was in Covid) to discuss the fact that:

"The numbers look great.  Keep doing what you are doing."

If the numbers ever don't look great, I'd rather come in.  And, I'd like a face to face once a year regardless.

Part of that is due to the fact that if I go in to the office for a visit, I always sit around for an hour before I see the doctor.  With tele-health, I can sit at my own desk and be productive until the doctor is ready, plus I don't lose the commute time, or burn those extra fossil ounces of fuels coming and going.

Joe Biden launches 'Out for Biden-Harris' campaign initiative to engage & woo LGBTQ+ voters (exclusive)

by Christopher Wiggins, The Advocate, APRIL 10 2024 5:00 AM EST

The Biden-Harris campaign launched a strategic initiative Wednesday to rally the LGBTQ+ community in support of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris's reelection in 2024.

The current administration is the most pro-LGBTQ+ in history.

The new program, "Out for Biden-Harris," highlights the campaign's focus on the LGBTQ+ community and acknowledges its pivotal role in previous electoral wins.

Campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez discussed the crucial role of the LGBTQ+ community in electoral victory in an exclusive to The Advocate.

"LGBTQ+ voters are a force to be reckoned with. They were critical to our victory in 2020, and they will be critical to winning again this November. That's why we're thrilled to launch Out for Biden-Harris, which will harness the LGBTQ+ community's organizing prowess to reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris this November," Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement

------

Normally, I don't get into politics. Last summer (June 2023) Donald Trump posted that if elected he would order federal agencies to prohibit gender transition at any age. We are already seeing hundreds of anti-LGBTQ laws being passed all over the country. Since taking office, the Biden-Harris Administration has made it possible for transgender military personnel to serve openly and receive gender-affirming care. There is more work to do and we need all the help we can get. If you are so inclined, get involved.

Federal appeals court overturns West Virginia transgender sports ban

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/federal-appeals-court-overturns-west-virginia-transgender-sports-ban/ar-BB1lISLz?ocid=windirect&cvid=c488d0fbb8874555990cacff2ba27d4e&ei=23

The Associated Press (16 April 2024)

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A federal appeals court has overturned a West Virginia transgender sports ban, finding that the law violates Title IX, the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools.

The ruling Tuesday from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocks a West Virginia law banning transgender girls from playing on girls' sports teams.

The court said the law cannot lawfully be applied to a 13-year-old girl who has been taking puberty-blocking medication and publicly identified as a girl since she was in the third grade.

Sports participation is one of the main fronts in legislative and legal battles in recent years over the role of transgender people in U.S. public life. Most Republican-controlled states have passed restrictions on participation, as well as bans on gender-affirming health care for minors. Several have also restricted which bathrooms and locker rooms transgender people can use, particularly in schools.

West Virginia is one of at least 24 states with a law on the books barring transgender women and girls from competing in certain women's or girls sports competitions.

Yes! I didn't notice it, but my dental hygienist said that she noticed my skin being smoother and softer. I think I notice it mostly after shaving my legs. I love how soft and smooth they get.

Glad to hear you are healthy. I'm sorry there are other issues, but as you said getting old sucks. I know what you mean about "being more cognizant" of the fact. I turn 67 this year. If the Presidential election doesn't go our way, I will be over 70 before any surgeries become available to me... surgeries that I asked for three years ago. In the Army, we had a phrase: Embrace the suck. Keep moving forward.
