Story by Andrew Stanton (3 March 2024)

A Missouri Republican proposed legislation that, if passed, could imprison teachers who support transgender students, the latest in a string of bills targeting the LGBTQ+ community nationwide.

Representative Jamie Ray Gragg last week introduced House Bill 2885, which would charge teachers who provide support to a transgender student's social transition with a class E felony. If the bill becomes law, teachers or school counselors who support a transgender student's transition could face a $10,000 fine, imprisonment and may be forced to register as a sex offender.

"Education begins at home, and it's time for the few liberal activists who've infiltrated the education system to stop interfering in the relationships between parents and their children. We need to make sure our teachers, those who spend their lives helping our children grow and prepare for the world, can focus on teaching. HB 2885 does just that," he wrote.

"Missouri GOP bill would require teachers to register as sex offenders if they support trans students... Read that again. Teachers will be charged with a felony if they support their students," wrote Jess Piper, executive director of Blue Missouri.

We ran into similar issues here in South Dakota. Not jail time, but regarding school sports. The Governor (Kristi Noem) issued an Executive Order preventing trans students from competing on teams of their gender. On the National level, (I forgot the organization that handles intercollegiate sports), declared that Noem's policy conflicted with their policy of inclusion. That meant that the organization would not host any championship games here. That translated into the loss of sales tax revenues from people traveling here and staying for the competitions. Kristi Noem is all about the money, so reversed her earlier decision.

I wonder if this Missouri Bill threatening to imprison teachers would have a similar effect. Teachers might decide to leave the state to look for work elsewhere. What happens to the schools? That could cause a loss of federal funding because that state law would conflict with federal law.

In an election year, there is a lot of posturing. Maybe that is all this is.

In the word of a friend "Gawd". Will this persecution ever end. Not quite come to that on TERF island yet, there is currently a law preventing such things but there are members of the govenment looking to change them, then it will be open season
