Title: I have a few questions about Trans and the VA
Post by: Amaki on May 29, 2018, 11:31:35 AM
More or less Im proud of my Military career, I spent 4 years in the Navy, between 2009-2013. I was aboard the USS George Washington (CVN-73) stationed out of the best port and the only place in the world I'd love with all my heart to live at Yokosuka Japan(well japan in general). Now im not saying I dont have other issues and Im working to get the VA to recognize these issues. My current fear has to do with me finally talking to my psychiatrist and getting my Transgender status on my paper work. I keep getting told they have a big trans community and support groups (even more so since I go to the Houston VA) and maybe all my fears are superficial but from one trans veteran to another who is further down their true path what should I expect and what can the VA actually do for me. I'm sure more questions will come up as the topic gets flushed out but these are the big ones.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your service. The VA is actually pretty helpful, look up VHA Directive 2013-003. It's their internal guidelines for the treatment of transgender veterans.

Now, get your ass to  Roll Call!  (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,96755.0.html)

I have been more than pleasantly surprised by the VA's response. From the way the staff treats me, to how other veterans do, as well. Things are a lot different than they were 20 years ago. I get hrt (estrogen shots and zoladex), one on one counselling, group sessions, voice training, etc. Our group leader is also working with prosthetics for bras/binders. There is more to be done. But we are a significant percentage of the population, there.

I would not have been able to transition without the direct support I have received from the VA. I just suggested another veteran contact them and she had great responses from the VA in Texas. At times you have to strongly suggest what you want because some have never worked within their program. Knowing the guidelines helps a bunch and the one listed earlier is definitely worth reading.
