  Did someone say road trip?

Okay so I stretched it a little bit. My part of the road trip started last Saturday when I left home shortly after 1am with my pickup packed and headed south to my girlfriend's place. We had a barbecue & bocci ball game to attend at 5pm. I made it to Michelle's and we made it to the festivities. A good time was had by all.
Sunday was church again where Michelle was once again up on stage helping out though in a different role that the last time I was here... something like 2 weeks ago. All my appointments had been taken care of and I am free as a bird for a month or so. Michelle (having made plans) was not yet free to go gallivanting around. Today was her last in person appointment until the end of the month.
Now here is where I stretched the truth a bit. We could not leave today after her appointment because that would look too much like a planned event and you all know that just would not be right. We may leave tomorrow evening after we spend the afternoon with Sister Jessica or we may leave Friday morning, or me might leave some other time. So there you have it... We do not know when we are leaving nor do we know in what direction and that is as it should be my friends. It is probably a safe bet that we are not heading west but then again we could... though not very far.
For this beta test run, Michelle and I will be put to the test to see what our road compatibility factor is. It takes a lot of effort to put up with another person on roads trips and this trip will test our limits I am sure. Hopefully we will be able to work out compromises in the joint decisions we will be making. It will be a challenge to Michelle in that it will be a unplanned route and activities we find along the way. I am looking forward to it myself and think all will go well.
I would love for Michelle to discover the enjoyment I get from meeting with the friends we have made her at Susan's. With that said I hope we will be able to meet some of you if we happen into your area. Again I do not know what direction we will be heading yet and doubt we will be going beyond Missouri. I make no promises but if you would like to be visited let me or Michelle know and PM or email us your contact info and we will see what we can do to accommodate those that raise their hands.

  Hugs,
    Laurie

An unplanned maybe road trip. Sounds like a fun non-plan.

Problem is, how is anyone supposed to know about requesting a visit when they don't know where your going? Speaking for others, of course, I doubt Fl is on the list this time around. Meeting Michelle would be nice though :)

Get along on a road trip? Somehow I don't see that being an issue for you two ... unless you both want to navigate. That's where the tension starts.

Unplanned trips can be loads of fun.

Had two family vacations where we had some plans to be somewhere then left ourselves with a week to get home.

Those took me to Corpus Christi,  New Orleans, and Memphis on the first one heading home from San Antonio.  Heading home from the Grand Canyon led to Zion National park, Bryce Canyon, Denver, Mt Rushmore and the Badlands on the other.

The tunnel to the UK starts in Central Florida, so I guess they'll have to come here first. Sorry.

Mistress Michelle has requested fresh bedding in the Honey badger travel "crate".
So I have no doubt there will be no misbehaving from a certain someone.
If there is though, I believe the fluffy cuffs will come out!

What are honey badgers in this context?  Are they the human equivalent of the animals with a reputation for being bad-tempered and going straight for the b&^^s?  Many years ago, there was a quite friendly one in Orpen camp in the Kruger National Park but staff told me that they were planning to dart and relocate it, just in case.

If so, remember to pack tranquiliser darts, also just in case.

The honey badgers are well-trained and behaved, and have been known to accompany me on various travels, assisting with tasks such as hunting of of the wilde Laurie in her natural habitat, as well as working security for me.

Okay, I'm out of your hair...
The neck rub is fresh in my mind and I'm jello.

Thank you two for the wonderfully fun day today.
I'm glad I am able to call you both close friends.

Please travel safe, try out the Prius tent, meet some new friends and visit the old ones when you can.
Take the roads less traveled.
Visit the worlds largest ball of twine!
Give hugs to lovebirds!  Give yourselves hugs.
Smile at each other as you tear up the map.....

Robyn and I have a heavy party schedule while your gone........hide the pickles!

Your dear minion and sister, Jess 🌸🌸🌸

Thanks Sis. We will have a great time I'm sure.

Well, Our obligations here in Walnut Creek have been met and we are free to go. Michelle thinks it would be good to actually pack the things we might need first. That means I will have to go through my stuff on the floor and make most of them neat and try to fit them back in the bag(or bags) I will be using. Then we can see if all my junk and her things fit into the Prius. If they do and it isn't too late at night we may get on the road tomorrow. Tonight is obviously out because as I've said my stuff is still all over the floor.
As you can see our departure time is still unknown as is our direction. We shall see what the morrow portends.

Hugs from Michelle and I

I have of course taken care of banking needs, informed card companies of where I might be in the next four weeks, prepared a sleep kit, medical kit, and am working on a personal care items kit and both travel daily and extended stay wardrobes.

The Prius has been serviced, and preparations made for extended travel.  Auto insurance is paid up as are assorted bills expected for the next month.

I suspect this may provide some insight into possible variations in travel approaches between Laurie and I.

Road trip day 1:  You all are safe so far, but keep those refrigerators clean!  We made it past the SF Bay Area getaway traffic, and routed ourselves around the Yosemite evacuation zone, taking 108 over Sonora Pass. There were fires burning in the canyon below 108 several miles west of the pass.

We stopped at Benton, getting dinner at Benton Station. It's basic but good food, and the only option for many miles around.

After dinner we headed to Tonopah, where we wound up in a hotel for the night. So ends Day 1...

Yes, you read it right, less than 400 miles today.  My belle,  Michelle drove the whole 10.5 hours and wound up in a Best Western for the night. "A Best Western! " in a bed that has more space between us than the distance we traveled today.
I agree it's an egrarious price to pay in ordered to be with her but what can I do? I do love her after all. Well maybe we will manage to get somewhere tomorrow.

Perhaps a couple of pictures will make up for our lack of progress. Bow all the haze and billowy clouds ate smoke. The dot in the brown haze is the sun at 6:45 pm. One one the blue haze shots is looking out and down at Mono Lake. We spent almost the whole day in smoke.

Hugs,
  Michelle & Laurie

That smoke looks ugly  >:(.  The NOAA smoke analysis https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html indicates that south is better than north. Las Vegas is just inside the southern edge of the smoke.  All of AZ and NM east to about Albuquerque looks pretty clear. It's heavy from NV into northern UT, including Salt Lake, and east to Cheyenne, hooking south across most of eastern CO. We're on the western edge of the thick stuff in Colorado Springs, although looking out the window it looks pretty normal and you don't smell it. The light stuff pretty much covers the whole country except what I mentioned above.

Just some fodder for your non-planning.  Or will Michelle keep custody of the wheel and make a plan after all? :D

Hi folks and thanks for the comments. We like them as much as you want to hear ours.
And thank you Randy for the smoke report. We aren't going to Vegas though we were pointed in that direction for a bit. That has been corrected now.
Goldfield is an interesting little town, so much so we went through it twice on our way from Tonopah to Warm Springs. We managed to make it through the town before the parade both times.

Hi Laurie

Keep us updated on the locations...I am trying to track them via google earth which will allow me to do a "Virtual 3d Tour" of your road trip which could be a bit of fun to share with those who have never been to that part of the country or in my case never even been to the country!  :D

Enjoy

Hi Liz,

We made it to I-93 heading to Caliente Nevada. We just past Oak springs trolobite site.
For those doubters here is a picture of Michelle trying to flag an alien down.

We have found Caliente.  Next turn 319 and into Utah.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180804/93ecd6f6b2ebc3ede7b605ccdb260979.jpg)

Ok, as long as you aren't putting in any hyperspace bypasses, you can have all the fish you want.

I'm crushed that you missed the Snobowl Ski & Bike Park in Elko (I was there in June), but I guess you have to avoid the Interstates...too many non-fish-eaters there.

Ok I'm guessing Cedar City gets your business for the night.  Nice town...go downtown and have a meal.  Don't hang out by the Interstate...

You girls are switchbacking all over the place.  I thought you were going northeast, then it was south, then east.  State Patrol is going to pull you over for weaving LOL.  Fun!

Hi folks,

Well we found beehive 18 in Modena and headed south to St. George where we stopped to hunt online for a camping (parking space) at a campground. My traveling companion doesn't feel spending the night in a rest area is safe. Reservations made at a KOA in Hurricane we could now think about  dinner. Low and behold there is a steakhouse area right across the parking lot, the Gun Barrel steakhouse. So in we go...
"Hi there can I help you?"
We would like a table
" Do you have a reservation?"
No.
" Oh, I'm sorry it will be at least an hour wait."
That's too long. Thank you. And out the door we go.
Michelle sits down and brings out her phone and starts poking at it. I less than 3 minutes we have a reservation. In 15 minutes we go back in and are quickly seated. Dinner was better than average be could have been better for the prices.
Back in the green streak, we are off to Hurricane and our own little section of the KOA overflow parking lot. It's not even dark yet and we are stopping? Sigh. So the great shift begins... Seat all the way forward, storage bins behind them, the rest of our belongings packed inthe front seats. Air mattress and sleeping bags lain down and inflating. Tent covering installed on the hatchback and we are all set for the night.....

Hi girls, Zion is amazing but Bryce with low sun angles on the hoodoos are some of my favorite views in Utah's high canyon lands.

So where to next or does that require too much planning....you do know that Colorado is just a bit east of you and worth a visit.

We seem to be going slowly what with the sightseeing and all. I think we may head up to Arches National Park today.

From the map it looks like Colorado might not be too far from there.

Dear Michelle:
Thank you so very much for keeping me and all of your readers and followers updated on your whereabouts.

I have traveled extensively throughout the USA and Canada and am following your trip with great interest as I did with the trip that @Laurie took in the springtime alone in her truck...  or did she have you tied up in the back seat???

Any pictures and dialog that you post will be read with great interest....
Oh yeah, Arches in Moab, UTAH is a must see, you and Laurie will surely enjoy it.
Just make certain that your vehicle air conditioning is in top shape!!!!
According the weather forecast.... over 100 degrees each day this week.

Thanks again for keeping us all posted, and be sure to untie Laurie from time to time.

Hugs, and well wishes,
Danielle

Don't take an odd road out of town. My brother did when we went and after driving 50 or so miles down the road there was a bridge. A car can get through but a pickup and camper has maybe 2 inches of clearance on each side. Nice view though. Take a float trip while you are there. Bryce and Zion are beautiful but don't get caught in a flash flood as the Virgin River gets a little rambunctious. Colorado is beautiful. I almost moved there in 1980. My sister lived there for thirty years in Longmont and Greeley.  You can take the road through the National Park and the highest road in the US down to Estes Park. Lot's of wildlife. Boulder City rocks. Maybe catch a concert at Red Rocks. Lot's of nice museums in Denver. Also there is Golden for some refreshment. Leadville on the west side of the mountains as well as Molybedam. Of course if you want to visit one of the most right wing cities in the country there is Colorado Springs.

So, I am wondering if you'll get a chance to take the Utah State Ferry. Yes it actually exists. You drive about 40 miles on a gravel road to get there, very pretty, and hot, and (yes) possible in a Prius, as we did it. But might delay you, and I know how focused you are on quick progress LOL. Or is that HRT progress I'm thinking about?

Colorado Springs is indeed more right wing than some places, but it has mellowed since the 80's and 90's. As long as you stay central and west side it's pretty darn tolerant, as I can attest.

Hi folks,

Wandering waifs of Susan' Place here checking in. We did not make hardly any forward progress yesterday at all. Two days gone and only about 450 miles. I think my traveling companion deployed  a land anchor to slow us down. It was either that or her desire to stop and see ever angle of wind and rain deformed rock outcropping in Bryce Canyon. She also insists on stopping at a motel or KOA park as soon as it gets dark. No wonder we can't get anywhere. I swear!

Today we continued on hwy 12 through Henrieville east to Boulder, Utah. We went through Escalante to get there. 12 all the way north to a little coffee shop in Torrey for coffee and breakfast.  Then it was east on 25 through Capital Reef national park to Hainsville. Then north on 24 up to I-70. A quick jaunt east to the I-191 south on our way to Arches national park  where there will no doubt be another touristing slowdown.

We are still getting along though I think I disappointed her at inspiration point yesterday.

Hugs.
  Michelle & Laurie

Yes indeed, @RandyL  is correct... if after you go to Moab and want to go back down southeast into south- western Colorado there are two must-go places to visit...

*In Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods has spectacular and beautiful scenery just barely out of the city.

*Also, in the Southwest Colorado, near Cortez, Colorado is Mesa Verde National Park.  It's known for its well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings.  All of the inhabitants mysteriously disappeared.  The ruins high on a plateau were discovered by a rancher in the late 1800's.  Now, a National Park it is preserved and offers wonderful sights to see and a very nice museum that depicts the life and personal effects of the cliff dwellers.

Again, make certain that your air conditioner is working well.

Hugs and happy travels,
Danielle

Thank God for old age. :-*  Grand Junction is not too far and Glennwood Springs is a little further. That's where Doc Holiday died in a sanitarium. Unless you are a high plains drifter take the bypass to Rocky Mountain National Park. I just took the train trough there a couple years ago. Outstanding. Make sure to visit the Stanley Hotel which was the location for The Shining.

Remember to stop and smell the roses sis.
Life is best when surrounded by roses!
Each new thing you see and do on this trip is part of the bouquet your sweetheart is giving you.
Now, give her a hug, then a kiss and stop and smell the next rose.

Hugs and smiles, Jess

Not to be an optimist here, but has anyone locked the keys in the car yet? Laurie you should really show Michelle what that is like.  :P   >:-)

Jessica Thank you for the nice thoughts and advice.

Minica - Michelle has vetoed the locking the keys in the car. I know it must be disappointing but she only locks me up at night so she can get some rest.
During the day we must keep up appearances. She doesn't even use the collar and leash.

Hugs

Dang you Monica for bringing up memories of Orlando. I took the family in the 80's when we went into Denny's. Hey I know poor choice. Anyway we came back to the van and I checked my shorts pocket and no keys. We went back inside and no keys. So I thought well I must have locked them in. It was sundown so I could not see inside. So we called a locksmith, paid good money to have him unlock the door and....No keys. Well we bid farewell to the locksmith and about an hour later lo and behold the keys were in my shirt pocket. I still get reminded of that by my family.

Haha I always knew you two were a kinky pair.

Dawn, now you volunteered that information, so remember that when we never let you forget it. lol

I will forgive the lack of a 'locked the keys in the car story,' but at least you could find an old abandoned refrigerator out in the middle of nowhere to climb up on. I think your readers should demand this. It's only proper!

Is it just me or does that one rock formation look like it should be named "Clyde?"

Beautiful pictures Michelle, they bring back such good memories of long motorcycle rides through the high desert areas of Utah. I am a bit surprised to see so much blue sky, not expecting that with all the smoke. How bad is it on your side of the hills?

Whew! Okay kiddies, The Official Wandering Waifs Tracking Map is now up and running. I'm not being quite as careful to track dates and times this time. Instead I'm just putting their waypoints in order and marking them on the map. As you see the dots get closer to your home, start cleaning off the fridge.

Enjoy!

Michelle and Laurie, I just caught up on your road trip. My wife and I were just in the exact same places as you two. We did basically the same trip but in reverse. I can't believe we missed each other by about a week. Looking at Stephanie's tracker map, we passed along the same roads, except from St George, we continued along the I15 to Las Vegas and then on to LAX for our flight home. Would have loved to bump in to you both along the way.

Glad to see you are both having a great time.  Looking forward to more of your updates.

Hugs,
Jayne

It hit us in Colorado Springs, on the much-vaunted tolerant west side. Guess I didn't mean to tempt the gods by saying we were tolerant of everything LOL. The insurance adjuster had just left my house after assessing the considerable roof damage from a storm on July 23rd. Then these 2" hail stones started dropping. I was glad my car was in the garage. Sounded amazing. It broke all the plastic dome skylights, some deck railings and window moldings, and dented the gutters. But we were actually lucky, as a couple miles farther south the hail was even bigger and that's where all the cars were totaled and people injured (and animals killed) at the zoo. I went outside just after it passed, and the sound as it pummeled everything nearby was amazing, kind of a low roaring sound.

Not that I want our wandering waifs to be afraid of coming down here...

Colorado is mixed. Depends on where you go. Colorado Springs, yes, very much so. Focus on the family and james Dobson are there. Go to boulder and it's totally different. The governor is a democrat as well. Once upon a time it was a solid conservative state, but a lot of Californians moved there and it's trending in the opposite direction now.

I don't pass (except from a distance), but go out in Colorado Springs regularly and have not had any issues yet. It can happen at bars and late night on the streets when the drunks are around, but otherwise not a problem.

Hi folks,

No sleeping in the Prius tonight. Nope we are in a nice bed at Tia Anne and Debi's place.
Earlier we took I-34 north up into the Rocky Mountain National park and up and up and up we went. More than 12,300 feet. It was beautiful up there. Over the top and then down into and through the community of Estes Park. We saw a few elk, beautiful vistas, and the Stanley Hotel that was used in the movie "The Shining". Then it was down the canyon playing tag with the river into the town of Loveland and parking in front of Debi & Tia Anne's place.
We were warmly welcomed, fed, and sat down to more good family conversation. Now it is bedtime.

Seems like an epic adventure at least as worthy as a couple of trans road trip movies that come to mind.

Bearing in mind that this road trip is also going to inspire a movie, try to talk to each other and to other people in appropriate dialogue.  It is acceptable to write down what you WISH you had said, if you weren't quite quick enough on the spur of the moment.

On the subject of movies,

...Over the top and then down into and through the community of Estes Park. We saw a few elk, beautiful vistas, and the Spencer Inn that was used in the movie "The Shining". ...

I am a fan of both the movie and mini-series versions of The Shining but wasn't aware of a connection to the Spencer Inn.  Did you mean the Stanley Hotel?  It inspired Stephen King in real life and the mini-series was filmed there.

Whew! Okay kiddies, The Official Wandering Waifs Tracking Map is now up and running. I'm not being quite as careful to track dates and times this time. Instead I'm just putting their waypoints in order and marking them on the map. As you see the dots get closer to your home, start cleaning off the fridge.

Enjoy!

That is hilarious to look at. That line of points only makes the faintest of contacts with any interstate highways, and sometimes appears to not be on any roads at all.  And I can vouch for the accuracy, too!

Yes, we are having fun, and learning to care better for each other, as well as discovering a bit of needed self-care.  This is a good experience for both of us.

Thank you for following this, Jessica.

@Michelle_P    @Laurie

I have taken fairly lengthy road trips and have purposely tried to avoid the interstates.   My last trip was over 4500 miles, western 15 states and all of the National Parks and I was only on the interstates for about 50 miles or so for the entire trip....   it was wonderful to go through all of the off the grid small towns and visit eating establishments, coffee shops, espresso shops, bakery shops and other locally owned businesses.
Truly wonderful getting off of the main roads.

I will continue to follow your road adventuress.....   are you still keeping Laurie tied up in the back seat???
Thank you for keeping us updated.

Hugs,
Danielle

So, what has happened to the road trip?

We are in Loveland, Colorado for a very special event with Tia Anne and Debra. But, there is another thread for that.

We will be back on the road soon, I'm sure. No definite departure date or destination of course.

Was one of those movies you were thinking about "To Wong Foo, Thanks for everything, Julie Newmar" with Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizano? All three of them were absolutely gorgeous in that movie.

Michelle and I have been here in Loveland for a week now and at our lovely hostess' request it appears we will be here another day.  Our time here has been wonderful and rewarding for us. Helping Tia Anne and Debi with preparations for their lovely ceremony of renewing vows and with the reception afterwards. And then very enjoyable time of comraderie shared with the other sisters of Susan's place. Michelle and I  cooked breakfast for everyone in the house including the brides who joined us Sunday morning.
All too soon we needed to be out of the house. Kendra running off to the airport. Jessica Rose and Susan off to home in Monument.  And the rest of use off to Tia's and Debi's place. A bit more visiting and Stephanie and Cassandra were off to the airport also.
As luck would have it we were to be honored with another night of visiting with our two Floridian friends because their plane left without them. Tia ran them back to the airport the next morning for another try at going home. This time they were more successful.
So here we are still enjoying the hospitality of Tia and Debi. We've been here so long I am beginning to wonder how much the rent will be. I think some consideration should be made for the three meals I was talked into cooking for them. Oh well such is life. At least none of those that ate my cooking actually got sick.  If they tell you otherwise, don't pay them no mind as they would be fibbing. Even Kendra was accommodated wit vegetarian dishes.
Michelle and I  will be moving on but I  am not certain when.

Hugs,
  Michelle & Laurie

@Laurie says "It's not my fault", "I'm innocent", and "Michelle did it."

I have no idea what she is talking about.  This arose in a discussion with Tia about the nature of our purpose in the universe. Well, there is only one thing to do, then.

Hi folks, Laurie here.

Michelle and I are once again on the road.
As anyone might imagine,  we have had a delightful time with our lovely hostesses at Tia and Debi's home for wayward waifs. We were requested to prepare some small edibles for their reception so while I distracted the happy couple one afternoon,  Michelle was given the keys to the kitchen to work her magic. It was best this way. Had I tried to help her I  am sure her creations would not have come out half as good as they did.
I did get my turn in the kitchen though to rustle up some simple grub for everyone consisting of bread, sausage, cheese, and a few vegetables.
During our time here we were given ample opportunity to exercise our culinary skills as well as sampling the wares of several good restaurants in the area. Somehow we managed to attend Tia and Debi's vow reaffirmation ceremony, reception, meet new people, spend time with stars in the House of Pleiades, and spend some more time with Debi and Tia.
I even was able to have an old, old high school and life long friend come to Loveland to meet Tia, Michelle,  and Laurie for the first time. John had been told of Laurie's emergence into the light of day several months ago and had indicated that there would not be an issue with her. Such is our long time friendship I knew that it would be as he said and there was no problem.
It was after this visit, that we determined it was once again time to hit the road. So with tearful goodbyes, we did just that. Michelle and I want to thank  these two beautiful sisters for opening their home and hearts to us.

Hugs,
  Michelle & Laurie

Alas Sadie we did not stop in Lee Veining. It was so smoky from the fires that we could not even see Mono lake at times though we were driving beside it.
Your last few lines left me confused  so I need you to enlighten me about them. We do not think it has anything to do with Georgia.

 Hi folks,

This morning (almost noon) we left Susan and Jessica's place heading somewhere. Our stay with them was a delightful 2 nights. The first night we went to dinner at a favorite restaurant of theirs called Cheddars. I again had the blackened catfish and Michelle ate an Asian salad. Both were good.
In the morning Michelle and I tag teamed a breakfast of cheesy  scrambled eggs with a little bell pepper and onion and a mix of pork chorizo, green and yellow bell peppers, onion, and pico de gallo. All wrapped up in toasted flour tortillas. For a fruit side We made apple slices fried in butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. It seemed well received by our hostesses.
That evening we met RandyL at Biaggi's for a very nice dinner but not as good as the company we were part of. Michelle had butternut squash ravioli with smoked chicken and minestrone soup.  I had minestrone soup also and black fettuccine with wild mushrooms and lobster in a lobster cream sauce.  It was delicious. Michelle said hers was also. We split a bombolini for dessert. It also was delicious and my blood sugar reading thanked me for it this morning.
This morning after a simple breakfast of oatmeal and blueberries and leftover breakfast items from the yesterday repurposed into burritos,  we cleaned up, then packed up, said our goodbyes to our gracious hostesses, and once again hit the road.
Now for you curious folks let me drop some names of places we've been today. Yoder, Co. Rush, Co. Punkin Center, Co. Kit Carson, Co. Cheyenne Wells, Co. Sheridan lake, Co. Tribune, K's. Syracuse,K's. Garden Center, Ks. Cimarron,Ks. And Dodge City, Ks.

My dear Tia Anne,

The problem is not in the finding the dirt roads. I found at least a hundred of them  and pointed them out to Michelle. The problem is that she had control of the steering wheel. I am sure the Prius could make it through on them. Even the wet ones looked okay to travel on. After all if those big tractors can use them surely her Prius can. Right?
We are current holed up in Gunsmoke on the edge of Dodge City with the wagons circled up. The wind has kicked up a bit making our wagon creak but so far the canvas is holding.
Tomorrow we will push on in an easterly direction in search oh another place to rest our weary heads. Perhaps we will meander towards the north since we spent the day moseying toward the south. Regardless if it be north or south we still will be trending eastward.

Hugs,
  Michelle & Laurie

Tia, while that's a tempting idea, I have that surgery a few days later back on the west coast, and there is a little prep beforehand.

Running from Nova Scotia back to California in just a couple of days is pushing it a bit too much for me. As much as I would love to see you two again I'm afraid I won't be able to do this one.

Your surgery is getting close enough, you must be so excited as it is something that you have been looking forward to for so long. Best of luck girl!

Hi Mariah & Jamie,

We are indeed enjoying our trip together. We are both giving and getting consideration in our travels. Michelle has been great at going wherever I have directed without complaint. I suspect this is foreign to her normal manner of doing things.  She has not once voiced a complaint. I have made my own concessions from the way I have done things in the past when I traveled alone. I joke about them but honestly I would rather have Michelle with me and make those compromises then travel without her. I suspect she feels something similar.
Yes, Mariah, we do know your door is always open to us. Thank you. I can only advise you to be careful what you ask for because you just may receive it.

Hugs,
  Michelle and Laurie

It's nice that you two are getting along so well!
You've heeded my thought of stopping to smell the roses.
You've become quite the pair, traveling about from flower to flower.

Hugs and smiles, lil' sis

Hi folks,

As you can tell from Michelle's post above we ceased our easterly progress at Dodge City much to the disappointment of my Missouri friends. So  we walked around Dodge City for awhile and discovered that all the times I have taken the bypass around the city, I  had missed absolutely nothing. There were a few dress stores that we window shopped at but even those could not dispell our disappointment at the town itself. So back to the car we went.
I tested Michelle on lessons learned by telling her "I  got us here, now you get us home." ...
How did she do? Well let me put it like this.... She's still a rookie but is slowly getting it. Given enough time I think I  can have her moseying down the highways and byways in some general direction without an actual .. Ugh... Plan.

Now for some places we have been.

Sublette, Ks Moscow, Ks Elkhart,Ks Boise City, Ok.

We had to stop for a blizzard in Boise City. Actually two of them. One reeses and the other oreo.

Was being part of our wedding just too much of a temptation for the two of you? What sort of path are you trying to lead all off your groupies along? You do remember that you still have some mob goils on the east coast talkin about startin a rumble over your last set of tall tales.

Hey goils, are we gonna stand for dis trash talk again from dem west coast floozies????

Love you girls!

I just spoke with the wandering waif Laurie, she assures me that they are not "planning" anything.  But I'm going shopping for a new dress in case I need to make a quick getaway south to Sin City.  I understand that blue, pink and white are in fashion.

I know that Laurie loves to wander but heading from Santa Fe and turning left at Albuquerque puts you dab smack into west Texas, been there, done that and no need for pictures.

Enjoy your travels girls,

BTW: we will be heading out today in a generally east north easterly direction for some fun Laurie'esq like traveling

Good morning folks,

We got up earlier this morning and Michelle seemed eager to resume our travels. She deflated the mattress and was off to the showers and back, almost before I crawled out of the Prius. I had gotten clean clothes and was in the process of changing when she went off for a couple of cups of coffee. I had moved a few things from my seat to put in the back when I  went off to the ladies room. When I  got back all was rearranged into travel mode. Including my pills which still needed sorting into the days dosages. Yep, Michelle was ready to go... I explained once again that we were not on a schedule and made her wait for me to take my readings and sort my pills.
So with all restored for travel we left Santa Fe behind in search of breakfast in Albuquerque where we found a Cracker Barrel. Breakfast was pretty good and so was the service.  Michelle opted for apple cinnamon steel cut oats with other fruit in it and a blueberry muffin. I had biscuits and gravy with sausage and a side of two eggs. With our hunger slaked, we were again back on our merry way. Where to? Michelle knows. She has an unshared plan (thank goodness!). We are still working on spontaneity and leisurely moseying. I am confident she will learn these skills as she learns to relax and enjoy life.

Hugs,

Good morning folks,

As the song says we are "On the road again". We were awakened at oh dark thirty (normal rise and shine time for our hosts) so we could be out of their abode when they left allowing them to lock up. Goodbyes  said and hugs given we fell into the Prius and hit the road in a northerly direction.

Greetings from Sedona, AZ

We left our gracious hosts in Phoenix and headed for Sedona before sunrise. On arriving we had breakfast and on the spur of the moment set off on the Templeton Trail.

@Michelle_P P   @Laurie
Dear Michelle and Laurie:   Wonderful and beautiful pictures of the scenery and of you two beautiful ladies. Thank you for posting them and sharing with your followers.

Well it appears that you both are still riding in the car with each other after being on the road together for such a long trip.  That is a good sign that you are compatible and your relationship is on solid ground.

Is Laurie doing any of the driving during this trip???   No car trouble I hope... I trust that is the case especially in the very hot weather that you have been driving in.

Soon, Michelle you will be checking in for your upcoming surgery when you get back home....  I am wishing your smooth sailing with all of those details and I will of course be eager to read your updates.

Hugs and hugs to both of you... drive safely and return home safely.
Danielle

Gotta hike early in the day. Once it gets much over85-90, I'm done. This time of the year, I'll get out up to an hour before sunrise. In the cooler times, sunrise is fine. What they consider cold here isn't and I make my best time.

Hi Michelle and Laurie,

I'm really enjoying reading about your travels and you have posted some wonderful pictures, as someone who has only visited the states a couple of times, Florida and Oregon, you are making me consider another visit and road trip (when I can afford it).

Thank you for sharing your trip.

Hi Mimi,

Me thinks you have yer states a nit cornfuzzeled. The Ponderosa is up north in Nevadie near the big lake they call Tahoe. And the only place us ladies is squatting is in those rooms marked women.
That girlfriend of mine had me out hiking almost 3 miles in a skirt and sandals. On rocky hillsides uphill there and back in 94 degree heat. Not satisfied she took me to the Lowell observatory and walked me for there shows on tours with thunder, lightening and train. One we are off again to who knows where!

Awesome pics!  I love that area.  We used to go up there frequently.  There's so much to see and do.  Lots of western history too.

(p.s. Be careful on those "spontaneous" hikes.  People tend to underestimate the effects of altitude, heat, the environment, and dehydration and overestimate their ability.  I've been on the receiving end of many choppters delivering sun-baked, dehydrated, and many times injured hikers. (//) )

While we were at Lowell Observatory the impending thunderstorms made me s bit nervous about sleeping in the Prius Camper. I thought I'd see if I could score a last minute cancellation room near Grand Canyon.

Score!  I got a good room at the El Tovar, a place usually booked up for summer season almost a year in advance. This could be fun.

While en route, I thought it might be fun to end the road trip with a bang, and perhaps celebrate my impending surgery. When I checked in, I got a dinner reservation at the El Tovar Dining Room.

I got the bellman to bring our bags and escorted Laurie to the room. It made a suitable impression on her. [emoji6]. We ran out to catch the Canyon at sunset. That made a bigger impression!

I pushed my presentation for dinner a bit, just for fun, as did Laurie. One last chance to play a bit with our nicer things on this trip.

Wow - what a perfect way to see and stay at the Grand Canyon, literally on the edge.  El Tovar Hotel (https://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/lodging/el-tovar-hotel/) is a National Historic Landmark and virtually impossible to book a room without advance planning (or is it plaining or plane-ing).  I had breakfast there 9 years ago, it was wonderful.

Those photos are keepers.  And for that matter yeah she's a keeper - I can hear you both sayin that.

Hi folks,

Thank you all for the complements and comments.   I tried to make an update last night but fell asleep in the middle of it.
While we were at the Lowell observatory, Michelle said she needed to step outside to get a better signal for her phone. After a bit I went out to check on her because the next tour thingy was about to start. She was talking to someone and obviously making some kind of arrangements. When she hung up I asked her if she had to make last minute arrangements for something and her cryptic answer  of " yeah something like that" struck me as a bit odd but hey we are talking about Michelle aren't we? So we go do the final thing there and get back into the car and away we go.
Not long after, because of the wonderful world of electronics and her frustrations she lets it  slip that we are going to the Grand Canyon. Well that is fine with me. I have always wanted to see it. What I didn't expect was what looked like a honeymoon suite at the nicest hotel at the grand canyon. I can say I have never stayed in such a place as we were shown into. We also went outside for a short breath taking view of sunset over the majestic canyon. Nor did I  expect roast duck for supper in their restaurant!. Needless to say I was appropriately impressed.
Hugs,
   Laurie

After a 760 mile drive from the Grand Canyon back to my Northern California town, I am home.

Alas, I'm up against a medical deadline.
Michelle, One trip ends and another soon begins!  Thanks for taking us along!

 Hi Folks,

Thank you all for coming along with Michelle and I. We got in after 2:30 in the morning so this is our first day back. Thank you also for welcoming us home. Today has been a bit busy for Michelle unpacking and doing laundry, grocery shopping and such. We both gained a few pounds but what can we say the food was good and the company we shared better.
It was a very good road trip and compatibility test. I think Michelle would agree that we got along very well with a little bit of give and take on both our parts. On the trip east Michelle followed my directions out without a single question. Once we visited Dodge City Kansas I took a back seat so to speak and let Michelle decide where we went and how we returned home.  She did very well adapting to my unstructured travel practices. I think Michelle thoroughly enjoyed wandering the countryside with me and meeting everyone we met. Thank you Tia and Debi, Jessica and Susan, Mariah and Jamie for the hospitality of your homes. And a thank you to the rest of those we met and enjoyed the company of along our trip.

  Love and Hugs,
   Michelle & Laurie

Dear Laurie and Michelle:
So glad to hear that you made it back home safely...  traveling is a fun experience but there is nothing like home and nothing like sleeping in you own bed.

Glad you ladies made it home safely. Thank you for sharing the highlights of your trip and photos with us. Do you know how many miles you drove? You covered a good deal of ground according to the tracker map Stephanie created for us.

Hugs,
Jayne

Based on Steph's map tracking (iStalker) plus local driving I'm guessing a bit under 4k miles (6k km).

100 gallons (400 litres) in a Toyota Prius or 250 gallons (1k litres) in a full size Chevrolet lorry.  Fuel savings from hybrid car is more than 2 nights El Tovar Lodge in Grand Canyon.  Sorry Laurie I know you're attached to your truck, I'll shut up with the math now.   ;)

Ha Ha Ha... But seriously Kendra, keep it up!  Going green is going good   This is our only habitable planet and home, so far as we know......

Pretty good guess.  I logged 4,490 miles, and 80.36 gallons of gas used.

The savings definitely covered the room and meals at El Tovar.   And, we got to stretch out in a full size bed!

Besides, how else could we have experienced the joy Laurie had at managing to get the Prius onto a dirt road?

A classic!  I am afraid I had visions of that happening on some of the roads she waxed enthusiastic over.  That or getting a rock punched through the big traction battery.

I don't think that car was even on a road. I looks more like a dry river bottom. I saw some boats in the Bay of Fundy that could give the car lessons. Of course they weren't going anywhere either.

That definitely is a unhealthy looking car! It appears to be between a rock and a hard spot.
