Title: The Orville
Post by: Dee Marshall on September 21, 2017, 09:14:09 PM
Vague ripoff of Star Trek? Homage? Comedy certainly. Surprisingly, this show is using it's environment in the same way that original Trek did. Sci Fi tropes thinly disguise a critique and an examination of society. This week it was our turn.

Mocklans are a race with, supposedly, one gender, male. The one Mocklan crew member and his mate have a child and it's female! We find that female Mocklans are fairly common, but their custom is to gender-change them as infants.

A surprisingly deep issue well handled by a Seth McFarland comedy.

April 22, 2015, the day of my first face to face pass in gender neutral clothes and no makeup. It may be months to the next one, but I'm good with that!

Being transgender is just a phase. It hardly ever starts before conception and always ends promptly at death.

They say the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train. I say, climb aboard!

Hi Dee,

I never heard of it before, but then I don't really watch TV though it is always on. I did stream EP2 and enjoyed it's low brow comedy. Deep? Hell if I have to analyze a show, it's not worth watching as I watch for entertainment. Yeah call me shallow, I like it that way. Thinking hurts my head.

Hugs,

I watched the first 10 minutes of the first broadcast show and I was not impressed or entertained. That show is just not for me. However, the season premier of Gotham was on Fox network last night and I can relate to that show. Yes, I do have a dark side!  8)

I like orville. It's like a much better more realistic version of star trek. The startrek shows I have watched were not realistic. I don't mean the sci-fi stuff, I mean the way the people acted and and the attitudes they had about everything. They were too perfect. I'm sorry but the human race is rotten, greedy, selfish and war like. It would take more than a few hundred years for us to become as enlightened as the people in the star trek series. The characters on Orville seem more realistic and they are funny too. But I'm sure the show will be ragged on pretty hard by the die hard star trek fans who go to the conventions, speak klingon and dress up like Darth Vader every Halloween.

I thought the transgender episode last night was done well even if it didn't end the way I hoped.

For me the jury's still out. I wasn't too impressed by the pilot and first show, and I haven't seen the second one yet, but then ST:TNG was pretty cruddy for the first couple of seasons, too. Couldn't really warm up to DS9 or Voyager, but watched them anyway. Better than "reality" TV. I kinda liked Enterprise. I mean, there was a dog on board! Archer seemed human, though I kept expecting him to say, "Oh boy!" (Obscure reference to Quantum Leap.) And I loved the theme song (Faith of the Heart). It's one of the anthems for my transition.

What I can't stand about most of these series is the way they play fast and loose with physics. I'm a bit of a purist, and non-atmospheric ships don't have to be beautifully streamlined, and they don't fly like airplanes. That's one thing that the new Battlestar Galactica, and for a while, Babylon 5 got right. And look how roomy and clean the ships are. I'll betcha there are navy people here who can tell you just how precious and expensive every cubic millimeter is.
Ok, deep breath...

Whoa, duck and cover, Julia! Not much gets the diehards riled up like conflating Star Trek and Darth Vader. Not that I care. I kinda liked both universes. As I said, better than "reality" TV.

As for RTV, a friend of mine was on one of those shows twice (remember Junkyard Wars?), and took his own very revealing videos of what goes on behind the scenes. Two others (and myself, peripherally) were on Gearhead Gladiators. Believe me, reality has nothing to do with it.

Oops, ranting again. Sorry!

Oh come now, Anyone who watch the original Startrek religiously and the reruns every night in the barracks while at A school will appreciate Orville's tongue in cheek humor. I streamed both the first and second episodes last night and thought it entertaining. Since that is all I watch TV and movies for I liked them. Had I realized it was Thursday (yes I lose track) and that Orville aired on Thursdays I would have watched it too. As for the space, Stephanie is right, no way would they have such spacious rooms but The original ST was the same in it's cheap extravagance. Yes, Orville is a comedic knock off of Startrek but I did enjoy it.
Did a toilet come to anyone else's mind upon seeing the Orville in the opening clips? All it needed was a lid.
As for the other Startrek's ; ST TNG was good, DS9 was okay but Voyager I couldn't stomach. Every week brought another episode of Captain plain Jane to the rescue! Give me a break. Enterprise? No, no I don't think so.  Battlestar Galactica got boring quick so I never got into it. I caught an episode or two of Firefly when it was one but didn't really pay attention until I bought the series on CD after a friend talked about it and after watching it I wished the had been more.

  Hugs,
   Laurie

Oh yeah there was that other movie  string that I never really cared for in any of it's various incarnations. I mean really gargantuan robotic ground attack vehicles ? It 's still just infantry, along with a death star that can annihilate worlds?? If you have one of those who needs ground troops? Darth be damned the force was a farce.

At least Enterprise got that right. Even the captain had bumps on his head from forgetting to duck under a bulkhead in his quarters.

Ha, I didn't think of that, just the three Geordi Laforge visors on the tail.

At least a bathroom was mentioned in one of the episodes. Nobody in Star Trek ever had to use one. I kept waiting for everyone to explode.

I thought those things that looked kind of like robot elephants were cute. And I remember seeing one of those shows with the little teddy bear things that lived in the trees. ADORABLE!

I caught the tail end of the show last night. It struck me that if being gay was dominant in a society and being trans was a required solution for females, this is what it would look like. I wonder if we ruled the world, would we make the same mistakes that straight or cis people inflict on homosexual or trans folk? Would power go to our head causing us to be judgemental and discriminatory? Maybe.

I didn't watch long enough to see the humor, but this episode made me think at least.

It's known that Seth McFarlane is a trekkie, he even had a bit part on Enterprise. My guess is he wants to do an actual star trek show, but he could only sell it as a comedy since that's what he's famous for. Having watched all 3 episodes so far I have to say the drama is actually fairly good, but the humor is just dreadful. There's an audible thud every time they tell a joke. Anyway my $0.02

The humor can be painful. That bit where they showed the alien "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" to get him to accept his daughter was a bit much. But I liked the bandito dance off.

So far the drama has been pretty on point. Science fiction shows often get cancelled early. I hope this one hangs on long enough to find it's legs.

Having given it a little thought: a race of nothing but men, because they change the females into males, raised a question on the continuation of the species. Maybe they don't alter the females too much? After all, roosters don't lay eggs.

That story was definitely different. It is normal and considered morally correct for them to have homosexual relationships and they change any female infant into a male. In the previous episode the character said he had laid an egg and then he hatched it. Maybe the species is capable of A sexual reproduction and their relationships are purely for romance. Or maybe the males can fertilize each other. They are aliens. It was a strange story line though.  Wow, a whole planet of only males. Who would they talk down and mansplain to?? That must be one sloppy, dirty planet with no females.

Well....most of the surface was turned into a factory, and/or test zone for weaponry, the kind that goes, BOOM.  So, yeah really dirty planet.

Maybe they are descended from a Seahorse like species.  The males give birth for seahorses.  The character who laid the egg was male, but his spouse was a converted male.  Maybe there's more females than they let on.

If you saw the episode, the mate was born female, and was the one that laid the egg.

Hi Trek fan here :). I agree that the Orville is using the concepts from Trek and applying them into a
Seth M. universe, and I like it so far. The gender episode "about a girl" I think it was called was not bad, and like Star Trek writing, this sci-com parallels issues to some degree

Anyway so far pretty good.

I also like the StarTrek Discovery, though the intro I'm hot and cold on (Starts out strong but then seems to abruptly end).

That's because it was the first of a two-parter designed to tempt you into subscribing to CBS All Access which is the only place episodes after the first will be available.

I loved The Orville, as a big Trekkie it resonated with me, i wasnt sure if i was going to like it, Seth Mcfarlane can be Hit and Miss, BUT i loved it alot actually, and im going to re-watch it again soon, im glad it was renewed for s2 so many of my shows right now seem like they could come to an end at any time, its nice to see this got renewed pretty quickly

I really like this show too. I like it much better than any of the star trek series. The characters on the orvile are much more realistic than the proper super polite star trek characters.

DS9 is actually my fav show of all time, so i cant agree here LOL

But i think its atleast better than TOS, TNG.... about on par with VOY, ENT, and Discovery maybe? .....

I watch it, I like it. Most of the humor is simplistic low-level stuff and could use an upgrade. I don't have any issue with cheesy acting but Seth MacFarlane's acting doesn't do anything for me. I'm giving it benefit of the doubt calling it acting.

I go to sleep pretty much every night to ST-TOS. I've watched them so much that they're better than sleeping pills.

I enjoyed all of the incarnations of Star Trek. The Orville is special in that the humor is delightfully raw. It does not need to be so refined that it loses all ability to make people laugh. If I wanted high brow comedy, I'd go watch old reruns of Frasier on YouTube or something.
