Title: So e.book or 'real' book, - which do you prefer?
Post by: Lady Smith on June 12, 2015, 09:53:33 PM
I love reading, I always have because the moving picture are better for one thing.  I have shelves groaning with printed books all over my bedroom, but after my daughter gave me a kindle reader for my birthday I've very much become a fan of electronic book readers and hardly ever touch a printed book anymore.

Before the Kindle I had an older Nextbook reader, but the menu interface was clunky and it didn't render some book formats very well so it didn't feature that much in the time I spent reading.  My Kindle reader has changed all that though.  I love the paper white screen which is so much better for reading than my old Nextbook and when I go out anywhere, - especially anywhere where I might have to spend time waiting, - I take my Kindle with me.  Being able to carry dozens of books with me in one slim lightweight device that fits easily into my shoulder bag is wonderful and the battery life on my Kindle is really good and the battery lasts for days at a time before it needs to be charged again.

Don't get me wrong I still have love for printed books and I own a few that are getting to be almost a century old which are wonderful to handle and read, but living with an illness as I do and often having to spend a lot of time in bed my Kindle just plain makes life easier for me.  If you asked me five years ago if I'd allow an electronic device to take me away from reading printed books I would have laughed at the idea, but here I am using one on a daily basis.

So what is your preference when it comes to reading?

I'm about 50/50. I love my kindle fire, but at times it feels better to have a book in my hands.

Like you, I love to read.  I was skeptical of e-readers considering the energy use and the discounting they do to authors.  Then I started traveling more and agree with you.  it sure is nice to take that kindle with as many books inside as we want.  I like the dictionary features too.  I got so accustomed to it that once when reading a paper book I started pushing on the word like it was going to pop up--duh

I wonder what could happen if our magnetosphere fails, even briefly, and the digital world goes poof?  I'll be heading back to the library shelves for something real or start cave painting :D

Most of my paper books are textbooks of some kind or another, - psychology, sociology, theology, health science & etc, - because it's still difficult to find academic 'xxxxology' books in e.book form that won't bust my budget and there is no such thing as a second hand e.book.  With theology there are some good reprints and translations of books dating from the time of the early church in e.book form that are reasonably inexpensive, but for anything recent it's a case of saving up my pocket money.
Just about all the fiction I buy these days is in e.book form and Amazon has some great discount deals from time to time.

Ha ha, I guess I would be the same Tessa, but perhaps without the cave painting ;)  Our local library has clearouts of older or less popular books from time to time and it's possible to pick up some great titles at around a dollar each.  Last time I went to one of their sales I took home a pile of fantasy and Sci Fi books so I'm really and prepared for the day when the digital world goes 'poof'.

real book! always! I like the smell, I like seeing my collection on my bookcase, I like being able to visually see how far I have gotten into the pages, and I can't concentrate when reading from my computer or a nook. I also like being able to bend and crease the pages.

I still prefer real books generally and I've always wanted to have a massive library at home.  These days I'm much more pragmatic about it all.  I definitely see the benefit of e-readers, especially for travel, convenience and it's hard to beat having an entire library in your hands, though I have yet to get one myself (other than my smartphone which doesn't really count.)

I don't have a Kindle and currently I prefer real books. Reading on the PC or smartphone is possible but difficult. Too easy to get distracted.

I dug out my old Nextbook reader and experimented with loading PDFs configured for Kindle onto it.  I get a lot of e.books from Forgotten Books (forgottenbooks.com) in Kindle configured PDF format and I hadn't tried loading them onto my Nextbook before.  Well the experiment was a success and the books all seem to display clearly which pleased me a lot.  There are many out of print books available on the 'net in various formats and the problem I found with a good many of them was that my Nextbook wouldn't render them properly or in a readable size due to the files being intended to be read on a PC monitor.  With the Kindle configured PDFs everything is fine and suddenly my old Nextbook has become useful again.

Something I like about my Nextbook is that it takes SD cards up to 32 Gb in size so that means that carrying about a vast library with me is very possible.  The only downside is that its battery life isn't anything like as good as my Kindle and the index interface is clunky.  The other problem is that the Android operating system has been nerfed so it's not possible to install a Kindle reader app on it and most app stores are blocked as well.  But apart from that it's going to do what I want it to do which is to have all my reference and out of print books all in one place.

I can't read real books, maybe I'm just too lazy to hold them open for very long but I think my dyslexia plays a part. Ebooks seem easier to follow and concentrate with. Have had a few Kindles which were all great. Though I'm finding my Kobo Aura just that much more sleek and impressive, also I prefer that the light is a little warmer and not as blue as the kindle, I feel I get to sleep easier after my reading with that somehow.

I also love reading.

I have a kindle which I really like but I also like print, so I suppose I'm split about 50/50. Books are cheaper her on kindle though!

I love reading, but I never can find a nice position to hold the book. My arm always get tired, the book get swet, and i get anxious that i will ruin the book (i like to maintain my books in always new condition - I hate when the start looking old).

So i got a kindle. I LOVE the kindle. No worries about ruin it or making look old, no need to protect the cover, the pages wont turn yellow (lol) and, the most important feature, its very light and i can read in any position.

I really dont get why people NEED the "smell and turning pages" thing. Reading for me is about get into that story until you forget about the world.

Nothing will ever replace the feel I get from real books. When I'm reading at hom eI'll always prefer a real, paper book. But I spend a lot of time on (and waiting for) the bus and the train and then it's so much easier to have an ebook. Not another thing to put in my (already full) bag, easy to put away, no need for placeholders...

So I think they both have their own merits :)

This :)
And books have the best moving pictures too.

I find some very old books are lovely to handle and read.  It's almost as if the joy they have brought their previous owners have soaked into the pages.

Real books are expensive here in NZ too Cindy which means I nearly always try and find a title I want on the second hand market if I really do need the printed copy.

Yes Nathaniel, Kindles are great for reading when you're having to wait for a bus or an appointment because there's no places to hurriedly put a bookmark in and they can be put away quickly and easily.

The rural district where I live is dairy farming country so the medical centre in the township has an ER type of role.  If the local St John's ambulance guys bring in someone appointment times can get delayed while the doctors are busy with the emergency.  More than once after a long delay my doctor has had to gently touch me on my shoulder to get my attention because I was deeply into reading a book on my Kindle and I didn't hear her call my name.

It also depend where I read. If I'm curled up on my sunny seat by the window I read paper, in bed I read my Kindle.

As I am getting old, it becomes more difficult to read printed books, especially those published scientific papers in very small fonts. E-book relieves my burden of presbyopia.

You can see the difference.

I love both, real books the feel and look of them ,love to size of e-books that i read on my (old)net-book.
Down side of e-books is that i can not read all as the use DRM and that runs only on a WC.
And as i get older to enhance the font size :) what you can not do with a real book.

Well imo its nicer to leaf back a few pages in a real book...
you can jump to and fro easier...

and its kind of more cozy... grabbing a book and a cup of tea...

I love the feeling of paper. However, there are times when it is just not pragmatic.

I love the Kindles with the original e-ink. I like the paperwhites. I am not won over by reading on glossy screen laptops, tablets and monitors. Pictures and videos look fantastic on them but it just does not feel right to the eye.

I guess to me it is like saying I like CDs better than mp3. Huge difference but put it up next to my vinyl...

Sorry, my geek slipped out. ;)

With warm thoughts and pages,

Joanna

I love the Kindle's e.ink system.  Glossy and reflective screens are annoying when trying to read which is why I don't use my old Nextbook so much.  When I'm not well I read e.books on a 19inch LCD monitor set up on a table beside my bed, but I have to turn the brightness way down or else it gets too darn irritating.

so i pretty much exclusively buy books from used book stores and thrift stores or just go to the library because that is where they are cheap and my only problem with ebooks is that they are expensive!!! but im not one of those elitist nerds who shames people for reading ebooks like.. haha have fun smelling your mildewwy old tome you nerd
i used to use a kindle very often but the only things I read on it were like Jane Austen and other things that could be downloaded for free and I think it is great for that!! but to read new books it's a rip off, as is buying brand new paper books imo. FREE KNOWLEDGE

I watch out for the special deals that Amazon has from time to time and buy most of my e.books then.  Some specialist titles can be expensive though which means I have to budget for them if I really want/need to have them.

And yes unfortunately real books do tend to take up space something to which all the groaning bookshelves in my room bear witness.

audio books. Particularly from Audible though there are free ways to get them through your library. I've been a heavy reader since 5th grade when I found The Hatchet and The Chronicles of Narnia. I couldn't stand reading anything more complicated than Little Bear until those. I love paper books for reference material such as RPG rule books, repair books, etc. and I love hardcovers of sci-fi and fantasy but Audiobooks have a very special place in my heart and keep my mind busy at an otherwise dull job.

So far thats only one kind of book I simply cant read in my kindle: my study books.

I wish i could, they are very heavy. But they have so much pictures and colors, and with the b&w kindle screen things get ugly! Sure, i could get a tablet, but there are a lot of university/professional books in Brazil that doenst exist in digital form. I either read it in digital format in english or I accept my fate and carry all my translated books... oh Glob...

Either way is fine for the most part. My shelves are pretty much full, so I generally download books to save space these days, although I find some books much more charming in hardback.  Harry Potter is just not the same on an iPad, but Slash's memoir is.

For light reading, and especially for reading in bed, I've learned to read on a tablet. I like being able to prop the thing up, not having to bother about holding it or keeping the pages from flipping around, and being able to "turn the page" with the flick of a finger. As another one with aging eyes, I also appreciate being able to adjust the text size. I almost never buy e-books -- my local library has an excellent selection of downloadable books, and there's also the Open Library (http://openlibrary.org/borrow), through which one can have access to almost anything.

But for serious reading I do prefer "physical books." If it's non-fiction, I want to be able to flip back to find an earlier reference to something, look at the end notes, find things in the index, etc., etc. All that is just too messy with e-books. And for serious fiction I just need paper, and to hold the book in my hands.

There's a free library program out there called Calibre, which is great for organizing an ebook collection and also lets you convert from one ebook format to another, e.g., from Kindle format to epub, or vice versa, and allows you to format the text according to your own preferences: there are many more changes possible than just altering the text size. I highly recommend it. I run it on my laptop, and it's very easy to sync it over a wireless network with other devices.

You're welcome, Lady Smith. PM me if you have any questions about how it works. (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthefiringline.com%2Fforums%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Fsmile.gif&hash=2c5a4907e2673dfa63557696254abe82f5c9641e)

Also, since you're in NZ, I believe it's legal for you to de-DRM ebooks for your personal use, and there's a Calibre add-on which will do that. (This may change with the TPP, but in the meantime...)

I'll probably read the e-book first, just b/c of the price. An exception would be used book sales, which are the best.
Then if I really like the book, I might buy the hard copy. Hardcover is reserved to mindblowingly amazing books :)

Print books for me.

And not because I work for a library! Lol.

There is something wonderful about a printed book. There is the tactile feeling you get when you turn a page, a smell (when the book is old or new), and the sound of flipping pages is lovely.

The only downside, for me, is that some of the newer books being printed tend to have smaller font. Puts a lot of strain on my eyes (which are bad from being born 3 months early). But I have discovered the joys of larger print books! Lol.

Ebook, most definitely. Print always leaves my fingers feeling dry and dusty. And, I like the option of carrying around a library and a bookstore in my hands, purse, or backpack. I'm not averse to reading on screens, so I'm even okay with an iPad or phone app over a dedicated reader.

I'm also stuck 9 hours a day in a dull office job, so I have a strong preference for audio books. My audible library is huge and I add 3 or 4 books a month to it.

I strongly prefer the physical book.  I have a hard time contracting with ebooks and find myself constantly checking my email, etc.  With an actual book I am focused and able to quickly devour the contents.  That being said I do prefer to read academic journal articles on a computer screen, but that is usually because I'm gleaning rather than reading for enjoyment.

I prefer audio books because I listen to them when I am outside walking and running.  I listened to over 100 history books that way and became a walking encyclopedia of European history knowledge, LOL.  Lately, I've been listening to University level lectures on various subjects.  Other than that I much prefer e-books because my library is always in my pocket.

I honestly prefer the feel of a real book in my hands. It makes the experience of reading far more enjoyable to me. I also love that once you are done with a real book, you can hand it over to someone else so they can enjoy it as well.

However, I usually use my paperwhite kindle now for the sake of convenience. They really are convenient in so many ways. You can have all of your books in one little device you can carry everywhere, and storage on shelves is no longer an issue. If you forget to take it with you, you can load them on your phone or computer as well. Is it dark in the room? Turn on the backlight. Having trouble finding that book you want to read at any store you go to? Simple; just download it onto your device.

Now I won't say that a ebook of any sort will ultimately replace a physical book. If it's not too much trouble, I will absolutely get a physical copy. Otherwise I will enjoy what technology can do for me.

I prefer hard back books specifically. Though perhaps only because it appeals to some romantic and equally nerdy side of me. Probably more the latter than the former.

Real books for the simple reason I don't have to rely on technology, at work I read all the time on my desktop pc(when technology goes down, no can work or read), which is ok, but for personal or academic development, printed books all the way(I'd go mad if my personal/academic books would disappear). Not many ebooks in academia for that matter, popular books, eh, prefer the printed book, with the exception of the newspaper, I like to read the enewspaper.

90% printed books/10% ebooks/enewspapers

Real books every time for me, I have around 150+ books & I read every day.

Here's an interesting fact gleamed from QI, there is a form of fungus that develops on the paper & it is believed that this can have mild hallucinogenic effect, it isn't strong enough to cause visions but this is why (apparently) the smell of old books can have a calming effect on those who read regularly.

I'm more comfortable with ebooks. A frustrating amount of books are typeset in such a way that they're migraine triggers for me, and with ebooks I can fiddle with the contrast, spacing and so on until they're comfortable. Until recently I worked in a library, and I still get the vast majority of my reading material from there, ebooks included. Still, it's a lot easier to grab a hard copy of a newer title than wait for the ebook or audio version to be added. I just need to make sure to page through a bit to make sure I'll be able to read it.

Nothing beats the feel of a book in my hands. but the e-reader is practical on long trips. Unless you are Rory from Gilmore Girls, then you carry 12 books on your European Vacation! ;D

ebook for fiction, paper for textbooks

I'm the opposite. I like paper books for fiction and ebooks for nonfiction/academics. I like having a search functionality for research, but I love the feeling of holding a book when I read a story.

I prefer audio books because I listen to them when I am outside walking and running.

Audio books are great for long car rides too, back when I was commuting to class all the time.

Real books, always. I never had a kindle, but read a pdf book on my laptop once. It wasn't bad, and I liked the mobility and easiness of just opening it up whenever and reading. But as a few others said, I couldn't focus while on my computer long term. Not to mention the lighting making my eyes buggy (I'm on computer/video games way too much). Besides those facts, I like to display my books and always have them there just to pick up and read again. I also like the flipping of pages as I progress through the book. :)

I'll always prefer material books over digital ones. The smell of a brand new book has been one of my favorite smells since I can remember. I love the feeling of the pages and find it to be more relaxing than reading off a bright screen.

Ebooks for me! For the convenience, the space, the mobility, etc etc. One other thing I love about kindle is you can download free samples of books before you buy them, read them at your leisure whenever you want and then decide whether you want to go ahead and buy.

Another thing I like is that you can put your own documents on an ereader too. I write novels so being able to do this really helps me to get into "reading mode" when I look them over (as opposed to being in "editor mode" when looking at a word doc on the PC screen.)

I read both, depending on what's available.  At the moment, I'm reading a real book, from the library, which they don't have as an ebook.

I don't think I've read fiction on paper for years now. Its a lot cheaper and more convenient just buying them on US Amazon, especially since US prices are so much cheaper than Australian. No postage either.

I like paper books, however, I'm pretty picky.  They need to be just the right size and shape for me to comfortably hold in one hand.  If they're too big or heavy, then I get annoyed.  I prefer paperbacks for this reason, hardcovers are almost always too bulky.

I don't mind ebooks, I'll even read a book on my phone (thankful my eyes are still good).  But ebooks are not my first or even second choice.  I just love the feel of holding a book in my hands, of the smell, and the feeling of turning the pages.

Because I like to turn the pages, I prefer e-readers that have a 'swipe to turn' page function, rather than a scroll up/down function.

Ebooks for sure. Then after I'm done reading it I don't have a bunch of dumb books laying around. My dad is totally into reading and he's got a couple of book cases full of books. I told him he needs to like throw them out or put them in the goodwill but he says no, that he likes them and might want to read them again.  Who would read a book again after you read it once????  I told him he can keep books he's read on a tablet in case he wanted to read them again without having a bunch of dirty, dusty books hanging around but he likes to read actual books. Whatever. To everyone their own I guess.

I prefer real books but the way I buy them it's not practical. I started using a book reader when we owned a 2400 square foot house and constantly ran out of space.

Hahah @Julia1996 , I have to say that your response amuses me because it's so different from my own feelings on the subject :D

I feel for your dad - I love my old books!  And I have read some of them more than once, including Lord of the Rings about 5 times.  I love the way bookshelves look when they're full of books - I think of them as decorations :)   I've always sort of fetishized the old library look, and one day I would love to have a room that is wall to wall bookshelves.

That being said, I've also moved a bunch of times in my life, and I'm fond of saying that 'a box of books is basically a box of bricks' when you have to carry it around.  :)   ebooks sure to cut down the clutter, and that's also good when going on vacation.  I used to drag like 3 books every time I'd go on vacation :P   Now it's just 1 tablet.

Real books for me, please! I have an e-reader with a lot of books on it just gathering dust somewhere. I don't ever use it. Nothing like the sensation of holding a brand new book, or smelling an old one!

Every time I look over the passenger seat is empty. If I was reading an ebook or printed book I would. I also use only one earbud so I can hear what is going on around me. I find myself rewinding  a lot because I am paying more attention to the road than the story. It is not any more distracting than listening to the radio.

I prefer e-books for general reading, but I still collect my favorite series in hardcover. It was a difficult transition, though. In the end, it came down to the number of bookshelves we had available. I discovered I like ebooks better on my Kindle, and eventually purged my .dtf (dead tree format) collection, and donated about 20 boxes of books. Now our books actually fit on the shelves, LOL. I still have a decent size paperback collection too, of stuff that wasn't offered in hardcover. Includes lots of first editions.

NO BOOK....Because I'm uncultured swine....

But in all seriousness....The convenience of an ebook is nice, but I'd have to say there is nothing quite like holding the book in your hand and turning the page....not to mention the smell of a good book is something an electronic cannot provide...

I don't read like I did when I was younger, no where close to it, but when I do I can swing either way. (That's what she said.)

My feelings exactly! My stepmother used to have tons of old books and our house was filled with over-full bookshelves... most of them had two layers/rows of books on every single shelf and then more stuffed on top! Most of them just sat there collecting dust!

If I really love a book I'll read it twice, usually after a few years have passed though, so by the time I re-read it I've forgotten most of the details. I read Wuthering Heights every 5 years or so. But the vast majority I'd only read once.

I don't understand when people say they like the smell/feel of books, either. Not saying that to be rude, I know a lot of people feel this way, I just don't get it myself! I'm more worried about damaging them, when I was a kid I used to try my hardest not to bend the spine. Another thing I don't like about paper books is when you try to read them while lying on your side, it's fine when you're lying on your right, reading the left hand page, but you have to hold it awkwardly sorta propped up on the side of the bed/sofa to see the right hand page (and vice versa if lying on your left.) With an ereader it makes no difference. I put mine in a wallet-case-thing so I can hold it like a book, but I always look at the same 'page'. :)

I have books that I've read three or four times, and a few books I've read a dozen or more times, and I get something new out of them each time. Or the comfort of the familiarity of an old friend. Often on a long book series, if it's been a few years since the last book, I'll go back to the beginning and start over, re-reading the whole series leading up to the release date of the new book.

Book series I've read more than twice:

Dragonriders of Pern, Anne McCaffrey (some books I've read more than 20 times)
Heralds of Valdemar, Mercedes Lackey (some books I've read more than 20 times)
Talent series, Anne McCaffrey, (5-6 times)
Brainship series, Anne McCaffrey (8-10 times)
Joust series, Mercedes Lackey (3-4 times)
Outlander, Diana Gabaldon (3-4 times)
Jack Ryan series, Tom Clancy (2-3 times each for most books, Hunt For Red October 6 times at least)
Earth's Children series, Jean M Auel (the first four books I've read about 6 times each, the last two sucked and I barely finished each once)

Then there's a few other books I've re-read every few years as the urge hits, especially some old sci-fi stuff I picked up in the 1980s that disappeared and are out of print now.

Keep in mind this is over nearly 40 years of reading. I probably read 200 books in a year, less than 1/6 are re-reads. I've been known to read four short books in a day (cheap romance novels) on lazy stay home days.

Real books.

I don't enjoy staring at screen at the best of times, so kindles never took off with me. If something went wrong with the electric or charger I'd have no book. I like having a place filled with real books.

The only upside of kindle for me is the way it saves space. I do have a lot of books.

I prefer printed books, I like to hold them in my hands and turn the pages and smell the paper. I also love looking at filled shelves in general, whether they have books or records or something else... Even if I only read them once and never touch them again I love my bookshelf and I don't want to get rid of anything on it. That's not to say I don't like the kindle I got from my dad a few years ago, I thought that was pretty cool. It's one of the ones that doesn't have a backlit screen, so you still need a light to read it but it's not gonna mess up your melatonin as much as a phone screen. I'll probably dig it out next time I'm at dad's... For now, I've got The Shining by Stephen King and The Power by Naomi Alderman from my school's library hehe
