Title: HRT through Kaiser?
Post by: dudical on October 11, 2010, 12:49:08 AM
I'm just curious if anyone received their HRT through Kaiser Permanente in Southern California (since I heard that it is indeed covered). If so, what was the process like?  Did they have you go through mental health first?  I believe endocrinology is a department which requires a referral, so I'm just curious if from mental health, you have to then go to your GP before you can get an endo referral. I'd also be interested in knowing what your approximate time frame was from when you started therapy until you were able to get on hormones.  I really have no idea if Kaiser follows the SOC or if it just depends on the therapist.  Any insight would be appreciated!

When I started HRT it was through Kaiser here in Oregon.  I went to my GP and she referred me to an Internist.  My Internist had worked with Transpeople before.  How they coded it I have no idea.  When I lost my job, of course I lose my insurance.  But thru a new doctor I still get my blood test and HRT through the state.

Did they require a therapist's letter or was it all informed consent? My GP is so out of it, so I kind of have to groan at the thought of asking her about the whole situation.  I heard that Kaiser actually has a list of trans-friendly doctors through a program called KP Pride, so I might look into that just to avoid any awkward situations.

Mine was total through informed consent.  But each doctor maybe different.  If Kaiser has a list by all means go with it.  I came out to my GP because it got me what I wanted and needed.

This might help you out: http://www.uclgbtia.org/transhealthupdate.html (http://www.uclgbtia.org/transhealthupdate.html)

Found that while researching Kaiser myself as I'm getting on with them January next year!

EDIT: Also... http://www.uclgbtia.org/TransBenefits.pdf (http://www.uclgbtia.org/TransBenefits.pdf)

That's a bit dated, but likely still applies now.

wow, really interesting to see that they cover surgery too.  i can't imagine getting surgery through them (other than hysto) because i'm afraid i wouldn't be happy with the results, but that's still really awesome that they cover it.

HI, I just came across your topic when looking for some other information.

I am at Kaiser in SoCal.  I didn't have to see a therapist before hand. I recommend Dr. Nelson Sanchez. I know several transmen who see him. The Endo he will refer you to is Dr. Tong who is also very trans friendly. They will mark your medical record as GID but will not inquire about therapy. Dr. Nelson might ask questions just to make sure you know what you're doing, but he is very supportive and sweet. I highly recommend. His office is in Hollywood on Sunset.

I hope this information was helpful.
