Title: Transphobic Colorado
Post by: Kira1981 on February 11, 2012, 03:49:26 PM
I live in a isolated part of southern Colorado. It is pure hell. I am constantly harrassed and bullied. The people next door bust out laughing every time they see me. The man downstairs purposly blasts his stereo 24  7. and calls me fag boy. And told me that I will live as a man and be treated as one. I am forced to live as a man in the wrong gender until I escape next month in March.

Hi Kira,
I wrote about you're situation here somewhere among the many posts at Susan's. I'm sure that you're not alone hon, and since I know you personally and know that you're a very attractive, feminine woman, you can just believe that there are some very jealous and mean spirited folks over your way. Glad I'm not there because I'd wind up in jail defending you. Perhaps moving to friendlier parts would be best under the circumstances. (((Hugs)))

I agree with Shantel.  Keep cool until you move out.  That fellow downstairs has problems that you do not want to cause him to bring to the surface.  Blasting the stereo up is one indication.  I was on the receiving end of a loud stereo in the navy transient enlisted barracks 24-7 for 4 months.  It got quiet when my squadron got back to the carrier!  That one is a long story I related to in another thread here.

Hang in Honey,
The problem isn't with you it's the fools who cannot accept you that have the problem. If they cannot accept you, you can bet they cannot accept themselves and are just plain jealous of you. You will be out of it soon, but they won't be. Use the time to practice stuff, voice, makeup etc. Don't let the fools get to you.

And we are here for you.

Cindy

I don't know where you are exactly, but I am willing to bet your community has "excessive noise" codes.  Usually they have a time after which the excessive noise is illegal.

First, talk to your landlord about the problem.  Indicate that the neighbor is likely in violation of the law and the terms of the rental agreement.  Then call the cops when your neighbor is in violation.

I appreciate your reply Cindy. And Jamie yes there are noise codes. Quiet time is between the hours of 10PM and 6AM.

Kira, then you neighbor is not only violating his rental agreement (which standard agreements contain clauses which require the lessees to comply with the law and agree to basic codes of conduct), but the violations put the landlord in the position of not complying with your agreement, which pre-supposes a violation-free environment.

Tell the landlord that you rented your apartment with the expectation of being able to sleep between 10 and 6, and avoid harassment, and until the violations are stopped, you are within your legal rights to withhold rent for the substandard housing.  That usually gets their attention.

Tenants who harass other tenants are subject to eviction and possible legal action.  Landlords who allow this conduct can also be prosecuted.

Sorry to hear that you are having a hard time down south. March is right around the corner, not sure where you are going but Northern Front Range has been good to me, Boulder, Longmont, Ft. Collins all good.

I spent about 6 years in the SLV while I was still trying to live as a male (and doing a poor job of it). You have my sympathies. I hope Boston proves to be a much happier experience for you.

Only a couple of weeks to go Kira.  It'll be worth the hassle I'm sure.

What ever happened to this gal?

Just for the future or anyone else in Colorado i found this.

The Colorado Hate Crimes Law was recently expanded to include sexual orientation and transgender status. This law covers harassment or intent to intimidate based on a person's actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity.

This law covers more than physical violence toward another person. Physical threats in the form of words, action, or damage to property can be constituted as a hate crime.

Colorado's transgender-inclusive law was successfully used for the first time in 2009 in the murder case.

She had been a close personal friend, we were an item back in 2005. I had helped her considerably financially but she was her own worse enemy and headstrong against all good advice. She left Seattle because I am married and wouldn't take it any farther and the police was looking for her for fraud and ID theft. She wound up in Center, Colorado and had a miserable time with the Hispanic neighbors who tormented and abused her even punching her breasts. Finally she headed to Boston and last email I had from her she claimed to have renounced Christianity and became a Satanist and was a priestess, I was constrained to cut off all contact at that point because I won't go there. The warrant for her arrest here is still active.

Of course, southern Colorado shares a border with Oklahoma.  Don't even think about going there.

Colorado did elect a gay governor.  That's a start.  Jared Polis will be much more LGBTQ+ than Oklahoma's Kevin Stitt.
