Title: Can I be 'prescribed' therapy by a doctor?
Post by: AlMoSi on February 07, 2014, 07:12:42 PM
Hey, I'm sort of new around here, and I just joined really, but my girlfriend has been researching here for me for ever since I can remember. You know she's the best girlfriend ever when she knows more than me about transgender culture.

I'm a 20 year old FTM stuck living with my parents and brother (who happens to be 7 years older than me.) They're very christian, homophobic, transphobic, you-name-it-phobic. It would take a while to explain, but to make it short, I have no education or license so making progress to living and earning money on my own means either getting help from them, or being homeless. And they absolutely, entirely refuse to help me. This by itself has nothing to do with being transgender, even if I came out to my mother last year, I lied and told her I wasn't after because of how awful she treated me about it. But it gives you an idea of the living limitations.

So my issue is, I want to get a checkup as I haven't since I was a baby. I live near Calhoun GA and I wanna find a trans-friendly doctor. I'd appreciate it if anyone could tell me a few, and if I do go to one, can they give me some form of official document that prescribes or recommends me to a therapist? At least then perhaps my parents will let me go to a therapist, even if for them, it will be to 'fix' what's wrong with me. And I'd like to know of some places nearby where I can safely be housed, because after they all find out about me, they could get too abusive here or disown me. Thanks for any help in advance, this is a wonderful community.

Therapy can't be "prescribed" but rather referred to when a practitioner has something beyond their scope of practice. As far as housing, local women's shelters might have resources for homelessness. Only thing I could recommend off top of my head is see if there is a way to get an ID card so that income is easier (verification of citizenship wise).

As far as a doctor for care, that might be a little difficult as the nearest Planned Parenthood is in Marietta and even then insurance is an issue. Therapy wise that's also limited by geography but she (in link) might be a fit.
