Title: How do I deal when the dysphoria is crippling?
Post by: nanospirt on October 30, 2017, 05:02:40 PM
I don't even know what else to say. It's just so incredibly bad today and the thought of having to wait for T is making me wonder if life is worth living. What do you guys do when it's too much?

Distraction is about the only thing available to you. Do some activity that keeps your mind occupied like read a book, listen to music or talk to a friend so you have to pay attention to them and not allow your mind to roam free. it doesn't work all the time but it helps.

I struggle a lot with dysphoria. It is a day to day sort of thing. I'm not sure how to deal with it either. I have to wait 2 more years before I ever get on to hormones and move on with my life. I now decide to listen to a whole lot of music. It is a good way to divert my mind. It helps me get through the day. I also do anything I can to change my self as I am. I just started using makeup and changing my vocal and walking patterns. That is what I do. I know it does not fix the issue, but it helps me a whole lot.

I hope you can get on T as soon as possible. Just hang in there. Your true self is waiting, and I know you would never miss the chance to become that person. I hope you feel better soon.  ;)

Love and hugs, Mira

Yoga, Tai Chi and meditation are all excellent ways to draw a person out of themself by focusing on the breath to still the mind. I have Dissociative Identity Disorder and yoga has been a part of my life for 7 years now. It is the only way to pull all of my alters together so we can have an hour of peace each day.

You're FtM, I guess from you mentioning Testosterone?
Well, usually it's easier for biological females to pass as male than the other way round, when you're not extremely petite; cut your hair and get some baggy male/non gendered clothes (A MtF would have a harder way to wear dresses and put on Make-Up). Of course, just when you feel comfortable to express yourself that way. Maybe you don't want to emphasize the "pressure" of men to have short hair, but it surely eases dysphoria in regard to society. The clothes should also work if you have large breasts, when you put a male jacket/mantle above. It's winter (where I live?) so no one should ask questions. At least on the outside, but going for a walk an passing is a dysphoria stop. Last week I went to a store in a foreign district and the vendor thought me being male.
I think the most betraying thing is a face.
I have an editing program on my phone, where I can change color and shade of a photo. When dysphoria's crippling, I have the strange habit to take selfies and edit them until they look as if "I'd pass", and mostly it's enough too deepen the shadows in a picture and take color from the lips. But I'm pretty androgynous anyway, so I can't promise it will be as easy for you, though good editing programs can work magic. Still, that's just a manner of mine, hence might even make you crave transistion more...
If you can't do any of those (p.e. you're not out yet; well I'm craven and not out too but did all those things anyway... No one would even get that "uttermost insane" [quoting a parent of mine] idea, that I'm Transgender, people are narrow-minded that way) or it is not as successful, then there only stays distraction: read, watch your favorite series, demanding music (science proved it works as a drug and as far I know it's the best  and safest drug of all ehehehe), immerse yourself in your hobbies - preferably something not showing off what you might call mismatched body (as swimming). But please, please don't spend all of your time sitting on social media and surrounded by mindless stuff, trying to shut out your mind by dumbing it down for hours, because it just makes things worse anyway. Don't think of transgender issues all the time - yes it is important to be well educated but remember that gender is not EVERYTHING what determines YOUR personality, and it would be a waste to think so.

When my dysphoria is crippling, I look in the mirror and try and pick out every little feminine thing about my body -- from every small curve to the angles of my face (I'm MTF). It really helps, and it also serves as a form of a distraction.

Thinking about what feminine features that you have, regardless of how small or significant, and being thankful for that is good to do.  I can see how that would help.

I agree, I'm FtM so I try pointing out masculine things about myself and this helps a lot. Even just figuring out things I like about myself help even if they're not inherently masculine. Also if you're up for it, taking a photo from shoulders up without a shirt helps compensate for my dysphoria personally, and some people might consider this weird but masturbating seems to help for me. This one's a hit or miss because it could worsen your dysphoria so if you get a lot of bottom dysphoria it might be best to just not, but it helps me personally to be more body confident. I don't know if this helps anyone else, but I'm just sharing.
