Boylan is a novelist, memoirist, screenwriter and teacher. She is a professor of English at Colby College. Currently, she is working on a new nonfiction work about growing up in a haunted house, which she hopes to release in 2007. The best-selling novelist is known mostly for her transgender memoir, "She's Not There." Since the memoir was published, it became a chance for Boylan to inform people on a condition that she says affects some 40,000 people in the United States. "The problem is that most people don't know about it," Boylan says. "And one reason is that people who make the transition frequently vanish off the radar and go about the business of living normal lives."
