Title: Weapons, shooting, guns.
Post by: Devlyn on March 22, 2018, 06:19:40 PM
We do this periodically, it usually gets pretty heated, locked, and deleted. Let's try again, shall we?   ;D

I love guns. I love weapons and weapons systems. I love anything that goes downrange and creates mayhem.

Go!

The few times I have tried it, I am pretty good with a rifle and hand gun my love is a shotgun. There is nothing like a full choke on target creating a beautiful black cloud of junk where a moment before there was a clay target. I have tried other games but American trap is my game.

My gun safe is big enough to put other gun safes inside it.

I have a serious problem

Considering the school shootings, this thread will be over quick. Born, raised and lived on Long Island for 40 years, Iowa for 9 and now in AZ. I've had a pistol license since I was 19 and have owned all sorts of pistols over the years, but I've had the same stuff over the past 25. I learned how to shoot on our summer trips to Jackman Maine and up until I got married, I'd hunt every year. I took a break for 17 or 18 years and tried elk hunting in Colorado some time back, but after a few years, it got expensive and I wasn't into it like I was at one time. Even though I have a 1911 and High Power, I like venerable stuff, like lever action rifles and single action pistols, regular revolvers too. I have owned a AR-15a2 HBar years and years ago, but I don't care for the Mattel guns all that much. I appreciate real wood and steel. I believe that people have a right to defend themselves and especially in the trans community this is a sore point for me. Too many allow themselves to be victims and at least in the US, we have choices, but the talking points and liturgy of the lgbt movement contraindicated such options. In other countries, they don't have those options and they have my sympathies, but ultimately, we are responsible for our own safety. All that said, I don't belong to the NRA or any political parties or other so called rights organizations. Most of them, the big ones, jobs 1,2 and 3 is to raise money and gain power and I'm too heterodox to go along with most groups agenda. Just not into the tribal insanity. I'd have to give up too much of my individuality. All that said, guns are tools that can also have artisanal and even artistic value and need to be shown proper respect. I'm not a gun nut, but I don't eschew them and I know how to use them and all that's fine with me. Anyway, I hope to get this posted before it's locked. [emoji16]

The topic isn't about school shootings, the NRA, or politics, and  hopefully no one after you will try to bring it there. :)

I'm a really good shot, always have been. I enjoy the competitiveness of  target shooting or just plinking cans.

I have always had a talent for shooting as well. I love competitive shooting, the more physically brutal the match the better. I'm weird like that.

I'm also fascinated by the mechanics of firearms and do all sorts of hobbyist level gunsmithing.

Here where I live, we all have handguns (I usually have a .357 Magnum handy that will bring down a Grizzly) and other handguns and various rifles and shotguns.... for self-protection and for hunting.
There all kinds of bad and dangerous critters here and I wouldn't go outside at night to take out the garbage or put stuff on my compose pile without at least bringing my .38   Young people here learn how to shoot and safely handle guns and they respect weapons for what they are, a tool and not something to be toyed with or to be brandished without due cause.

The result is that break-ins, home invasions, random shootings, assaults, muggings and robberies are just about non-existent in my small town.

I am a very good shot with all sorts of weapons and have a lot of them in my closet, around 12 of various types.  At one time I had a concealed carry permit and often carried my 1911A1 locked and loaded.  But a few years ago I just totally lost interest in any of it so all my weapons now just sit there gathering dust.  The only concession I make is to keep my Barretta 9mm with a full magazine next to my bed if it's ever needed.

One kind of funny story was when I was in Kosovo we were visiting an official of the Kosovo Liberation Army at his house and I asked him what a weapon was I saw on his shelf.  He handed it to me and said it was a .50 cal sniper rifle.  At the time I had never seen one before.  Then I asked where it came from and he said the USA, . . . Oh.

Fortunately I didn't pull the trigger as I was handling it since right before I handed it back I pulled back the bolt and inside was a chambered round.  That could have ended that meeting very badly.

At $7 a round, you either aren't going to do it very often or you need a large bank role. If you get the chance, bring earmuff hearing protection. Those things are loud.

That would be a neat thing to do for sure.....   as you already know, when you do fire it, hang on tight and hold it tight against your shoulder!!

A friend of mine had a .444 Marlin. It was like loading a cannon. We chewed through a box of rounds. I  held it tight, shot better than he did. The bruising was magnificent!

Firing a Barrett will blow a hat off the head of whoever is next to you with that muzzle break angle.
Firing an HK51K 9" will blow the hats off yours and everyone elses heads within 10 feet, most ignorant gun to fire EVER.
Had a shop, was class 2, have had and do still have many of those.
Shooting is fun, being a certified instructor....not so much.
Had a guy ask me recently if an M1A was fun to fire, told him I don't know but the select fire M14 sure is, his next query "same gun on semi...how is that to fire" told him I never thought to move the switch that way.

I was a scout leader and went to Philmont.  At one of the camps we were taught how to load our own shells with powder and shot, 6 apiece.  We went out to the skeetrange and tried our luck.  I was the last to shoot, I had never shot a shotgun.  Everyone got none, 1 or 2 pidgeons on their try.  I aim by the hip....4 out of 6.  They told me I was a natural.  I have always been good a hitting things with just the feel, no aim.

I'm not a competitive person. I didn't play sports in school and I don't gravitate towards such things. With shooting, I liked to hand load my ammo  and get the best performance for precision and accuracy's well as terminal ballistics.  It's similar with cars or motorcycles and performance. If you're into drag racing, it's more about making small improvements and finding out what works best, not about winning or recognition, at least for me.

I've owned one for 36 years. It shoots sub MOA at 100 yards for 5 shot groups.

In the UK handguns are effectively banned. I do own several deactivated 50s/60s era handguns, Lugers, Browning HPs etc. which are legal, since I have an interest in firearms, but otherwise the only things you can shoot here are shotguns and rifles. Target pistols were banned in the 90s.

I own a fair number of bladed tools/weapons and use hand spears for sea fish. Probably only a matter of time before some jobsworth bans them too. But I'm not a fan of spearguns (though I own 2) it's more of a challenge to hunt with a pole spear by hand.

I like my guns and enjoy going to the range and shooting them.  I've taught all of my kids how to properly handle and use firearms.  I qualified expert in the military and am still a pretty darn good shot.  I have semi-automatic handguns and rifles and bolt action rifles.  I have a number of shotguns as well.  I have AR's in 5.56 and .300 BLK (I load my own rounds using my old 5.56 cartridges). I really love the .300 BLK because it so versatile. I have subsonic rounds as well as target and hunting rounds.

I've heard the Israelis really like women for snipers.

You know I'm not really in it to beat others (though I don't mind when I do) but mostly for the challenge of extremely difficult shooting while under pressure. I never was into sports either, this just makes a hobby of mine more interesting.

I used to do a lot of hand loading as well and still have a couple of presses, I just haven't had time to do it for the last few years.

I have fired various weapons over the years, started with 22 bolt action single shots as a kid, 9 mm pistols and 12 gauge shot guns shooting trap. I had been thinking about getting a concealed weapons permit and begin carrying for protection since transitioning.....but I still have bad periods of emotional lows and kind of prefer not to have a weapon within reach during the darker hours. This is just my issue, I have no problem with others having weapons if they can safely handle them.

softbutchharley is my screen name. Go figure huh ?  lol !!! I love my weapons and I love sport shooting. I am a regular at Ladies Day at the local range. I was raised around weapons and shooting sports. My SRS doctor in Miami turned down one of my pics for his site cuz it was with a Ruger mini 14 modified that I love. Oh well. He prefered runway model pics anyway...sometimes I think he had a lil harem going down there !!!  ROTFL !! I had a range built at my farm in Texas before moving back home here to Florida. I guess that answers that question eh ? Is it ok for a girl to like shooting sports ? My friends from my old motorcycle riding group sure think so. All female group and about half with CCL :) Great topic and ty for posting it !!!

Somebody shoots at me, I wanna shoot back.

Like Donald J. says: "It's not a gun control issue, it's a mental health issue." One of the few things I agree with him on.

Biggest gun I ever shot was 5"/54 naval cannon!

I too have been quite a gun lover for most of my life.  At my peak, I think I owned 25 guns.  About 5 of those evil AR15's a couple AK47's a Smith and Wesson 500 revolver which was amazing!  One of my favorite guns was my Marlin 336 chambered in .450.  That thing would about break my shoulder every time I would fire it.  But between the pain and the $4.50 per shot, I did not shoot it very much at all.

I even made a video one time where I did the whole Mary Poppins bag thing.  Where I had what looked like a tiny little bag sitting on the table, and I proceeded to reach inside it and one by one pull out every one of my guns.  All 25 of them out of that tiny little bag.  I thought it was pretty clever funny, but my very anti gun wife just about divorced me when she saw it.

Just because I am now living life mostly as a woman, does not mean that I all of a sudden give up my love for things like that.  I had my concealed carry license in almost every state in the country for many years, and now more than ever see how carrying as a transwoman could at some point save my life.  But my wife is so dead against guns, if she so much as sees a random round of ammo sitting somewhere in my garage she is scared to death of it like it's gonna jump up and kill her or something.  I have not been able to carry ever since getting together with her around 4 years ago.

My ultimate dream as someone else here said, was to own a Barrett .50 cal.  That was always my ultimate goal.  When I added one of those to my collection, I would have felt complete......for a few months.

I had Glocks, Springfields, Smith and Wessons, .45's .40's, 357 magnums, 22-250's, 30-30's, .450's, .223's of course, an AR15 that I built chambered in 7.62X39 so it could share ammo with my AK47's.  Yeah.......I was a bit of a gun fanatic.  But all I EVER used them for was target shooting, and just appreciating the art and beautiful designs and hard work that went into building them.  I have never shot a single living thing in my life.  And never plan to unless it is attacking me.

Yes, I used to live in California but happened to live up in the north east part in a practically shall issue county so it was very easy to get a permit, and then I was able to carry all over the entire state.  But I used to be on the internet forum CalCCW and would always feel bad reading about peoples negative, super long drawn out stuggles of trying to obtain one in San Diego County.

My all time favorite every day carry gun was my Glock 30 which is one of the few guns I still own today.  That thing has been the absolute most reliable, trustworthy gun I have ever owned.  I have never had a single failure to fire, failure to feed, jam, or anything else.  So you can probably understand why it was the one that I trusted to carry all day every day.  It has traveled around the country with me, and been to Los Angeles and San Diego and San Francisco with me many times.

As I mentioned in an earlier reply, everyone, literally everyone here in my small town has a gun/firearm or two or three.   I don't go hiking or walking outside on the trails here without a side-arm..... we have bears, cougars, and other nasty critters all over.   When I take out the garbage or compost out in the evening, I make lots of noise and have my revolver with me.

.... as a result, there are literally no gun crimes to speak of around here.... no home invasions, no armed robberies, no muggings, etc, etc.

In California it's a control the masses thing.  One of many reasons I left!  Here in Nevada which is even more open than Texas, all I have to do is strap it on but honestly after carrying one for so many years, I really prefer not to.  That said, if the life of my family or me is in danger I have no qualms in defending my family and myself.

It wasn't too long after my wife passed away that I found out that I was one of the victims of wikileaks that identified me and my home address info.

There are enough crazier than me people in the world and I had told my daughter that if she ever ever heard me yell the word drop to hit the floor no matter where is was at.

On the good side, she mentioned about going on a cruise or traveling and I commented on the Wikileaks issue and she says, but you're not him anymore, lol.

As sad as it may be, people with the intent to do evil in their hearts will.  McVey didn't have a gun.  911 hijackers didn't have guns.  And that cult up in Oregon or Washington that tried to kill off the residents with the veggies didn't have guns.

Alaskan Danielle...Beg to differ but Alaska is the 2nd most violent state per capita. At 636 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. The only state with a higher violence rate and no it is not Illinois, is Louisiana followed my a handful of other Southern states, Maybe in your neck of the woods it seems safe. Nobody is threatening to take weapons away other than military type weapons. As to registration? You register cars, boats, for classes, purchases for warranty, Facebook, Google

Yep....lived in Palmer AK for a while...familiar with common sense out and about roaming...and fishing those rivers and creeks ;)  My fav right now is still my SW mdl 39 in nickle with pearl handle. very pretty lil thang ;)  Also my SW mdl 59 in nickle with same grips. My mini 14 is dead on at 200 yards and I love shooting it. I took my Remington 7mm mag to Alaska with me when I thought I might want to shoot a moose, but changed my mind when I realized folks would give me moose they had  lol !!!  My partner loves her Ruger MK IV I got her, super accurate and fun to shoot. I have a small collection  (5?) of hammerless colts from the 30'2 and 20's . I LOVE those lil pups :) They are such a historical piece. I call them Elliot Ness handguns cuz of the time they were made and in all those old gangster movies you see them. AND you can switch out the 380 to 32 barrels on them :) I used to hunt and trap in Texas and as a youngster here in Florida, and have an appreciation for wildlife and marine life that is keen. I stopped hunting deer cuz at my farm they would hang out in the yard and I just got to feeling it's too easy to "hunt" them. My peeps here in Florida keep me supplied with venison/hog/alligator...so I still get game to eat which my home enjoys. I stopped bird hunting cuz that was all about the dogs and the human/animal interaction and cooperation. I used to field trial retrievers. I have no trained dogs now, and bird hunting without a dog is not an interest for me as well as it's not a sound conservation move with no dog. I do not conceal carry. I try to avoid places and situations where I could be in a problem, tho sometimes stuff just happens. Like a cop once said when I got a speeding ticket "..why do you have that pistol on the seat ? (in a case) . Cause I've been shooting and coming home says I. Correct answer says he....."  :) my point on that matter :) My next weapon on my list is a Ruger mini 30 . The 7.62 cartridge has shown very good reviews with that rifle. It's easily customizable. Ammo fairly cheap ( tho my air force friends seem to have an endless supply) . And the Mini 14 I have has been flawless since I got it. I like Ruger tho years back I saw them as a come lately, they produce a quality firearm. lata peeps :)

You're bringing back memories.  My first "personal" service revolver was a S&W 357 Combat 19 and load was semi-jacketed hollow points instead of carrying the .38 the department issued.  I definitely was in violation of department policy but felt that if it came to the point where I had to use it and was still alive afterwards I'd deal with the paperwork.  Then came the 9mm which were new and approved for purchase and use.  So much easier to clap in a clip versus using speedy loaders, lol.  Back-up was a 2" Colt Detective special with grip extension

Now it a 2" chrome .357.  When I first obtained this one my daughter was so excited because it was so small, lol  but then when the 357 loads she didn't want to even touch it and that is even true to this day.

I don't get along with the baby Smith revolvers, they rotate in my palm and the cylinder release likes to grind the skin off of the knuckle on my right thumb

I like them but they like my flesh too much so we keep apart.

For me it's usually a Kahr cm9 9mm. In bear country it's a Glock 10mm with pocket nuke ammo.

LOL.  Now the most important question?  What color is it?

Stainless and black for the Kahr and basic black for the Glock. I'm not much for turning guns into fashion statement.

Darn, I was soooooooooooooooo looking forward to loosely holding my pink plated 9mm and waving it in the air like a Valley Gurl :)

Just kidding, 357 is still nickel plated and 9mm black.  Now my 12 gauge Mossburg is rainbow with pretty flowers glued to the barrel - not :)

Only have one. It's my carry gun (when I carry, which I should probably do more often) S&W Shield 9mm. I like the size. It's easy to carry in my purse.
I make it to the range once or twice a month just to make sure I can still hit something!

Ok Devlyn, good thread so if it's alright with you I will add a bit to your original question. If you do carry concealed, what is your preferred method? When I have thought about it my purse was to insecure and easy to get away from reach, I virtually always wear a skirt so the thought of a thigh holster seemed obvious, most upper body systems seemed too lumpy and bulgy......what do you all do. By the way, if I were to carry it would probably be a 9mm, maybe a Sig, at least something with a safety but then I am fairly ignorant of the options.

I qualified the bare minimum on basic training: FN 7.62mm rifle, Browning 9mm and Browning SMG.  I haven't held a firearm since.  A friend of mine once said, "I'd like to see you with a gun."  I answered, "No you don't.  The only way I'll pick up a gun is if I intend to shoot someone."  I'd have to borrow it of course.

Wife #2's father was a retired LA Cop and had that disease where your hands shake.  And I really think we got along better than his daughter and I did.

Anyway, the first time I met him, he ID'd himself, I ID myself (kinda let dog butt sniff'n) and he pulls out a 32 breach loader.  Due to his medical issues he couldn't operate an revolver or automatic.

On top of that his waving the pistol around scared the crap out of his daughter.

Sadly, I received notice from the LAPD Protective League that he had passed away and Wife #2 and I were in the process of getting divorced.  Really miss the guy.

I'd love to have a Jovino Effector. Closest thing today might be a Smith model 69 combat magnum or a charter arms pit bull in 45acp. Charter is coming out with a snubbie in 41 mag and 45 Colt. That said, with 5 kids , 2 in college and expenses, I've had to put gun purchases on the back burner. Maybe some day.

I have a "Police s&w model 10 snubnose and I love it... it is heavy duty and will handle +P ammo. A few years ago I bought a ruger model 101 snubnose .357 magnum... I sold it because it was very tough on my hand.. it was a very light revolver and had a very hard kickback that dug into my hand... might have been good for a defensive round or two but plinking and practice not so good.

My favorite revolver is a Ruger Gp-100 4" barrel Full Under-lug with a Hogue comfort grip.  The under-lug adds enough weight to help reduce the kick.  Very comfortable to plink with.  Out of impulse (and a Dirty Harry) fan I bought a S&W 44 magnum years ago.. it is a cannon for sure and if I fired it at night I would be blinded by the flash and also would be deaf for hours.  Good for Grizzley Bears I would think.

I have a Ruger Redhawk .44 mag I got in Alaska in case I ever ran across an angry grizzly.  When I was later teaching my daughter to shoot she refused that one after seeing the flames leaping out from the barrel.  Instead she said she preferred shooting the small pistol, my .45 ACP, LOL.  She was a pretty decent shot too and got all the rounds on paper, enough to stop a bad guy.

I also had a Dan Wesson 44V 8" with a pivoting shoulder rig. That was a monster. Then there was the first government model I bought. Shot it so much in the first 2 months the front sight came off. For home defense I think the best weapon is a shotgun.  Just racking the magazine in the dark may scare them away and if not they don't take as much skill to aim.  There's also less chance of penetrating walls and hitting an unintended person.

Here is my "assault" [emoji12] shotgun.  I actually got it in Alaska after being out with some Eskimos who carried 12 gauges for bear defense.  This one is also very easy to carry slung and has a seven round magazine.  The barrel is short but still legal.

Totally understand your comment about "racking".  Back in my patrol days I'd prefer to ride shotgun instead of driving.  Nothing made the bad guys ruffle their britches faster than the racking the riot gun.

Years later I modified my Mossberg with a pistol grip stock, doesn't fold in like your's but somewhat alike.  Even had the sense of humor to add a scope light :)

I took my optional Pistol Grip off of my Mossberg and reinstalled the regular stock....  with a pistol grip and firing Magnum shells, I could easily lose muzzle control plus it hurt my hand... and my stomach if I didn't hold on tight....  regular loads were kinda OK.

Good point.  I haven't figured in the effects of no longer being a manly man who can rack a shotgun single-handedly and shot it :)

I never shot mine without the stock extended.  But I bought it for a single purpose; easy carry and a last resort at close range against giant bears.  In that case the pain from shooting it is insignificant compared to the pain of being eaten.

In the home it's length might also be advantageous at close quarters in confined spaces.

If I ever need a shotgun for actual hunting I have another regular one that's very long.

This is probably quite tame for most here, being in the UK, the only hun I saw growing up was my uncle's shotgun on his farm gunning for pheasants.
I shot a '45 pistol in Las Vegas at a range, it was good fun, and I was surprised at how easy it was. I'd happily have a go at some bigger stuff, or try out the challenge of some long-range targets.

I am so glad to see this conversation here. I could use some advice. I've been gun shopping lately; it's time to add a concealable semi-auto handgun to my little collection. I've more or less got my heart set on a Sig Sauer P320. (I prefer the original version, prior to the trigger upgrade. The upgrade increased the trigger pull by around a quarter inch; no thank you to that!)

My question is this.  Do any of you have experience with Sig Sauer?  Are they good, dependable weapons?  Should I be looking at other makes and models? I'm looking to get into a small to medium frame 9mm with light trigger resistance and a reputation for reliability.

You all make me feel proud to be a trans woman!  Thank you!

Love,
Miharu

I've always heard good things about Sig Sauer.  Another brand with a good reputation that I do own is Beretta.  They are excellent also and worth some comparison shopping.

These are my two Berettas.  The top one is a 92F (9mm) and as about the same size as a M1911 .45 cal.  The bottom one is an 85 BB in .380 auto.  That one is a lot smaller and is about the smallest I can go and still fit my hand comfortably.  It's plenty small for an easily concealable holster or a bag but is marginal to fit in a pocket.  Unfortunately, this model is not made anymore.

For concealment I found that the most important thing is a quality holster.  I had a custom fit inside the belt holster made by Milt Sparks and with it I had no problems concealing a large frame .45 cal under a t shirt.  The holsters you can buy off the rack in stores do a much poorer job at both concealment and comfort.

I am not so much interested in guns, but I was being trained with that M-60 machine gun and the M-16 rifle about 30 years ago here (S. Korea). Roars from the M-60 were enough to terrify me. Probably the M-60 is less lethal than the M-16, but I thought that the thundering noise of the M-60 can cause a tremendous psychological effect. I needed earplugs.

At that time, most ROK soldiers carried the K-2 or K-1 rifle, which are lighter and shorter than the M-16. Some of them were once exported to the U.S. (e.g., Max 2 rifle). My son is now in the obligatory military service, and should carry the K-2.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMdBnjeQIB8

The most concern in the army here is any accidental gunfire, not an attack from N. Korea. The total number of bullets should be kept accountable, whether they are filled or empty. If any officer lost his pistol, it was reported to the headquarter, bringing dozens of criminal investigators, as potentially it can be used to assassinate the president or other important political leaders. A joke at that time was that you have better lose a man rather than losing a pistol in the army. I once heard that even all honey buckets within the unit were emptied to find the lost pistol.

I've met quite a few Korean Marines (BAMFs) as a member of the 1st Marine Division Association we'd have get togethers and celebrate the ties with the KMC as back far as the Frozen Chosin During The Freezing Season and Vietnam.

When I got my paratrooper beret my wife was shocked.  She told me that at the time ROK paratroopers had a reputation as a bunch of gangsters.  I'm not sure how true that really was.

When I was there all the ROK soldiers had a serious reputation with us as all being as hard as rocks (big compliment).

Thank you!

Love,
Miharu

Sigs are great guns my primary CCW pistol is a old Sig P245 and I'm saving up for a P320 X9 or X45 with the red dot right now

Have you looked at Cross Bread holsters ? Wen I'm working I carry a full sized 1911 using a super tuck you can't tell it so there under a tucked in polo shirt

The M60 is much more powerful then the M16 the M16 is only a .223 going 2800 FPS and the M60 is a .308 going 2700fps

I heard the SIG's are the cadillacs of pistols, like the S&W's as the cadillacs of revolvers and so forth(own Ruger GP100(sturdy frame) and Taurus snubby revolvers(minimum sturdy frame), some of the best craftsmanship. You cannot go wrong with SIGs. Cheapest I will go is with the Browning Hi-Power 9mm(great pedigree, reliable, and affordable, own one, not any other pistol). I also heard the Polymer wonders are stupendous, aka Glocks. SIGs and Glocks, are great selections(great pedigrees, expen$$ive, reliable).

Great Mountain Warfare Girl is starting up a training company for self-defense  :D, which co caters to the LGBTQI community, sorely needed for our niche community :).

You can't go wrong with SIGs or Glocks.

Yes. The M60 is much more powerful than the M16. But the M16 was more lethal because it was rifled with right-hand twisted 6 grooves, whereas the M60 was with 4 twisted grooves. I heard that international law prohibited using rifles with 6 twisted grooves in wartime battles. The AK-47 also had 4 grooves.

Yes. Some of them still look like gangsters in their uniform at their age of 60 or more. People don't like their appearance so much.

Wow, no.  The number of grooves has nothing at all to do with lethality.  There are a few laws (the Hague convention of 1899 in particular) that ban hollow point or other expanding bullets for most wartime use but there are no laws regarding the construction of rifle barrels that I am aware of.

They are both more than capable of killing people, the M60 just does it better at longer ranges due to the larger cartridge it fires.

I really want to like Sigs but they just don't fit me.  Glocks work well for me, but nothing fits me quite like a CZ or a Tanfoglio clone thereof.  I dearly love my 75b, P09, and Stock II.

Thank you ladies for the purchase advice.  Your Berettas are beautiful, Deborah.  I handled a few current model Berettas, but I found that the slide release was too hard on my thumb (tearing at my skin.)  The Sig Sauer has a nice, comfortable tension on the slide release, and the overall balance feels good to my hand and wrist, even with a full magazine.

I think I will move on the Sig P320 9mm.  Thanks for the holster advice too.  You all rock!

I have one of those as well that my Grandpa brought back with him when he was in the Navy.  It still has the somewhat coveted chrysanthemum on top of the received that the Japanese wanted ground off if the guns were going to be taken.  Arisaka Type 99.  It was hanging in his gun wrack my entire life, and I always admired it.  So when he died, it came to me.

@ Miharu:   I might be a little late to throw in my 2 cents worth here but I will give it a "shot"... so to speak!!! LOL

Regarding trigger pull, for the less than accomplished shooter a light and shallow trigger pull may not be the best thing...  it could be too easy to fire off a round when you are nervous or shaking... if you are really in trouble another half pound pull and a little more trigger travel may be better and safer.

The small frame semi-automatic pistol that I chose to conceal carry for myself is the Ruger LC-9.  It was a Christmas Present to myself since I went full-time so I got the pink version.... I could never have a pink gun in my old life!!!!

It comes with a neat little zip-up pouch.  Because of it's small size (3" barrel) and it's concealed hammer and rounded edges, the gun fits nicely in my purse and doesn't get hung up on other things in there.  It is a double-action only, which means that you don't have to fool around with pulling out the slide which can be a problem and a delay in a nervous crisis situation...  It will also fit easily and invisibly into my coat pocket when in cold weather and active situations when I am not lugging around my purse.
So, that is what I chose for myself for concealed carry.
When I  conceal-carry when participating in activities such as hiking, running, jogging, etc... I will have my gun concealed in a belt bag or fanny-pack.
I have also carried larger guns on a hip holster and in larger bags but this little Ruger is my favorite...  I suppose it might be because it is pink?  ???
Any questions please ask.

Love your pink pistolla!  If I had a pink one I'd just have to have my nails the same color :)

Your "squeeze" comment brought back memories for me.  In USMC Boot Camp we left the Recruit Depot and went to Camp Pendleton's Edson's Range for rifle training.  The DIs had loosen up on their craziness and we were primarily under the direction of PMIs or Preliminary Marksmanship Instructors.  Of course two of many key issues was breathing and squeezing.  The PMI couldn't do much to control my breathing but place a thumbtack on the trigger.  Seemed to work for me, lol, because I qualified expert (M-14) but when my DI found out about the thumbtack he went crazier - didn't like his recruits injured.

Yes. You may be right. The number of grooves does not seem to be directly related with the lethality, and I guess it was a wrong theory in the 1970s. Nevertheless, the M16 and its variants (AR-15 and M4) were considered inhumane compared to AK-47 and others, because of fragmentation of the bullet inside of the human body.

"These wounds were much larger than those produced by AK-47 and they were so devastating that many considered the M16 to be an inhumane weapon."

"International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) pp. 1–18: Those who consider the M16 inhumane include; the International Committee of the Red Cross, Austria, Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Burundi, Cambodia, Cyprus, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mauritius, Mexico, Romania, Samoa, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, etc."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_the_AK-47_and_M16#Terminal_ballistics

The bullets of the M16 (or M4) were smaller than those of the AK-47 or the M60, but they were more damaging.

Grooves are for stabilizing the projectile and for better accuracy.  The M-16 round was made to have a slight wobble so when it hit, it caused more damage.

Yes that's the reason they're effective, the bullet does fragment. It's limited by velocity so it won't do that at long range.

The irony of the list of nations calling this inhumane is that it's filled with nations currently fielding weapons shooting the exact same cartridge.

Great point by Alaskan Danielle, almost forgot about it, subconsciously knew about this,
Forgot I was brainwashed into the single action pistol design(Hi Power/M1911A1) by the govmint. Double action in a life and death/badly injured situation, cannot be beat, hammerless(without the hammer exposed is great too), just point and shoot. Reason when I got exposed to the revolver(after I left the govmint, never before), I was like, WOW, no chambering  a round in the breech, walking/riding around with my hammer on safety with a round chambered, waiting for an accidental discharge(AD) on govmint old rickety M1911's/new HiPower.

Main point:
Double action-just point and squeeze, round goes off.
Single action-rack a round into the chamber(hoping one is in there/with safety on), or racking the slide and chambering a round, but you got to practice this lotsa times(live ammo/caution), with the weapon you intend to use, too much work.

The 1911 is very dense and kind of heavy for its size. If one lives in hot climes, it's not the easiest to conceal. Smith makes a shield m&p subcompact in 45 that's a lot lighter and smaller. Same with Springfield armory. The Beretta is a well made pistol. So are the CZs.  I'd prefer them to the striker fired stuff. I don't care for the trigger reset. That said, no other auto feels as right in my hand as a 1911. John Browning knew what he was doing.

Condition one doesn't bother me too much. If I was going DA, I'd prefer a pistol with a hammer and decocker. My brother has two glocks and they're perfectly functional, but I didn't like the trigger reset and the Mattel feel. A Sig 250 might be ok.

@ SonadoraXVX:    Thanks for your insights on this.   Exactly my experience, thanks for sharing.
One final point regarding semi-auto pistols....  there are a lot of women that because of small hands, limited hand and arm strength (or other issues) can not quickly and easily pull back the slide to chamber a round to get ready to blast off a round and/or rounds in semi-auto fashion.  Leaving a round chambered with the hammer back "locked and cocked".... and safety on... always bothered me a great deal.

With the hammerless concealed hammer or bobbed hammer on a double-action, like we agreed, if a round is chambered all you do is point and shoot.... no cocked hammer to worry about and no issues with having to pull back the slide to chamber a round.

I have always felt that in a single action handgun that "locked and cocked" was dangerous and just waiting for an accidental discharge. Same kind of logic applies with double-action revolvers versus single-action.

In my opinion the double-action feature of pistols and revolvers being able to just point and shoot is usually the very best and safest option for a occasional shooter that is most interested in self-protection.

I used to carry my 1911 with the hammer back.  It was designed to be carried that way with its safety system and I never felt that it was dangerous as long as the pistol was carried in a decent holster.  If the pistol is in proper working order then the hammer won't drop unless one's hand is on the grip.  I always figured that if I was carrying it then the only time my hand would be on the grip is if I wanted it to fire, quickly.  Hammer back also gives the advantage of a light first trigger pull and a more accurate shot.

Yes Deborah, you are very correct about all of those things.  A well disciplined and accomplished shooter can use all of that to their advantage..... I think that most of us on this thread have handled a single action semi-auto pistol like the 1911 and understand that it and others like it are great guns in the hands of practiced users.

.... now, enter the novice and very occasional shooter
that has purchased a gun primarily for self protection as is the case for many women and non-shooting trans-women and men.....  if they are in a situation that calls for a self-protection action... they will be nervous and shaking no doubt.... the very last thing they should have is a light trigger-pull, racking the slide and chambering a round and worrying about a cocked hammer and safety that can get hung up on something.
In conclusion, like any mechanical device, computer, guns, cars, etc.......  the accomplished user can take advantage of advanced features and more complex operation....
.....but in my opinion, the novice will cope better and be safer with simplicity.... I would always recommend concealed or bobbed hammer, double action in both pistols and revolvers.

.... Deborah, many thanks for your insight on this,
Danielle

.... Deborah, many thanks for your insight on this,

Yes, I agree with you on those things.  I may be in the minority here but I don't think anybody, without exception, should be able to own or carry any pistol or revolver without first obtaining certified training and qualification.  Things like military or law enforcement service might meet those requirements.  Many states already have that requirement to obtain a carry license.

I can't see how anyone could argue that this requirement would abridge their rights.  It seems to me that "Well Regulated" infers some minimum level of training.

When I got my CCW in NY at 19, I had to take a county police run course and qualify with their gun. In iowa, I took a course at a private company owned and run by a Des Moines detective and I had to qualify with my gun(I used my high power), but it didn't seem as rigorous as the first one 29 years earlier. That said, it's done. There probably should be refreshers required every 5-10 years anyway. It covers laws too. In Israel, I believe you have to take a psych test to get a ccw and to renew.

Alaska's laws do not prohibit anyone 21 or older who may legally possess a firearm from carrying it concealed or open. A firearms permit is not required.
There are general restrictions on where a firearm may be carried however.

Arizona is the same, except if you want a ccw, which I do. It allows me to carry in other states and some places that just constitutional carry wouldn't allow.

I live in Florida. For me and all other Florida ccw holders, about 35 states do reciprocate, but 15 do not. Other states are different. Ccw reciprocity is a confusing patchwork of state regulations. Know the laws for each state you wish to visit and carry.

We don't have nation wide reciprocity yet and given the recent criminal tragedy here in South Florida, I do not think we will get this done anytime soon.

I've had a permit to "pack heat" for 25 years or so. I carry a small Taurus 9 mil. semi. Too small for my hand but is very easy to hide with a 10 round magazine. I own a bunch of long guns but I haven't hunted in over ten years. Good old days...

I have to be really careful opening my safe to make sure nothing falls out on my foot.  I collect Smith & Wesson revolvers although what I love shooting most are my 1911's and especially my Combat Commander.  I have my Georgia Weapons License and my EDC, varies between a Glock 42, Glock 43 or a Colt Mustang.  I've lucked into a few really nice guns like an unfired Remington 700 in .30-06 made in 1972 and a Remington 1100 12 gauge made around 1976.  I also reload some of my ammo, espcially the .45 ACP.  Devlyn, I just picked up an interesting pistol.  It's a Star (Spanish made) Model BM, a former Guardia Civil 9mm pistol.  Cool little gun.

Once I gave my son a pellet gun and told him to shoot the backyard squirrels. The squirrels had become confused and thinking they were birds were destroying my bird feeder.  My son  inadvertently shot a window in the house next door and they called the police. A giant sheriff's deputy showed up at my front door.  I am not terribly small but this guy was Goliath.

I told him it might have been my son and carefully walked him through the crime scene, pointing out the field of fire I had assigned my son and conceding he likely had shot outside those limits.

The deputy actually seemed more amused than anything else and just told me to be more careful next time.

It was interesting reading what everyone carries and shoots.
Makes mine seem boring.

I carry a 1911 in an army shoulder holster to church and a 9mm derringer in my pocket.

We target shoot in the yard with either my Taurus 357 magnum with 38 rounds because they're cheaper or my Smith And Wesson model 29, 44 magnum.

My only hunting now of days is shooting mice in the house with my H&R 9 shot .22 with birdshot.

I have a number of really nice knives but many of them are Tanto tips of which I really like because the tip itself has a little more meat on it and is less apt to break off when doing terrible things to my knife.

I personally like the "Cold Steel" knives.  I "lost" one 2 months ago in January at the airport because I had forgotten that I had one of my small Cold Steel knives in my carry-on all-purpose bag that goes with me everywhere.  I wonder what TSA really does with the quality confiscated items that they collect?

Nope, you get a nice little talk with the TSA people, the local police people, your lawyer person, the judge.  Missing your flight is the least of your worries.  Thankfully not something I know from personal experience.

Your speaking of scopes reminded me of my hunting rifle (the few times I have hunted) that I got when my grandfather died.  He had originally gotten it in the 1930s.  It's an M1903 Springfield with a sport stock and a vintage Lyman Alaskan scope.  I think that other than the stock it's pretty much the same setup that our WWII snipers used.  It is really accurate with the only downside of kicking like an angry mule.

I just keep it around for some reason - Ah, to maintain accuracy

I used to have a Marlin .35 Lever Action with a pistol grip and open sight. Great deer hunting rifle (for under one-hundred fifty yards). It was light but kicked harder than anything I ever shot. Once I was out target shooting (actually getting it sighted in for hunting -- ammo cost too much for simple target shooting). Also very loud. Required hearing protection every time. A young lady asked to shoot it one time -- just one shot. She wanted to experience how it felt to shoot such a big gun. Stupidly I simply loaded it and handed it to her. Unfortunately she aimed like a girl -- She put the stock-butt down onto her bicep (not up firmly on the shoulder) and leaned her head way down to view the sight. I should have instructed better beforehand. She pulled the trigger and nearly fell back on her butt. Long story short -- she ended up with a very large black and blue bruise on her arm and felt a lot of pain for a week afterward. I never again allowed skinny girls to shoot it afterwards. :-\

I was given a Winchester model 70 30-06 rifle, badly loved, with rust even, chaffed wooden stocks, nursed it back to health. I just happened to have a lot of 30-06 steel cased rounds(when you could shoot them in california in the mid 90's at public ranges), left over from when I had a M1D 30-06 rifle, exchanged it for a Remington LTR 308 and other weapons(guns). Only true vintage cartridge and weapon I have, something tells me to not sell/trade/give this one away. The garand too, but just the Winchester fell into my hands for free. I once was at the square rifle range, just shooting my guns, when this young guy(rangemaster), in his 20's started telling me how to shoot my pistol, its flattering really. I'm thinking like ok, didn't solicit his advice or was asked if I know how to shoot, I just get a kick out of it anyway, but understand. I was ok, so what if I want to shoot like a amatuer/unitiated(not one really), as long as my finger is off the trigger, gun pointed downrange at all times or in safe directions, with action open and not saying dumb stuff,  lol(I just give off the, I don't know about this girlyboy vibes), anyway.

The polite thing to do is ask certain people, young ladies, certain men, even me, lol, if they know how to handle their gun, for safety reasons.
Gunny Sgt hardcore:Sgt Stud, does Cpl flowerboy/me, know how to shoot that M203 and do his MCI on it?
Sgt Stud: Yes he did and  he tore it apart, cleaned it, did a function check and I did a function check and recited to me
the particulars of it, eyeing the gunny.
Gunny Sgt: Hmmmm, why don't I just believe it, but its your behind Sgt.
Sgt: Yes I know
I'm thinking, Busted, disgusted, girlyboy can't be trusted, without rolling my eyes or smiling(just too mellow).
Yea I know, With the 1st shirt or higher/dignateries/impressionable/loved ones around, always tighten my game automatically(but nobody important I need to impress is around me), because even if they get a whiff, I'm a loosey, I'm canned from ops or live weapons handling and relegated to the remington raiders division.

Yes. The M60 is much more powerful than the M16. But the M16 was more lethal because it was rifled with right-hand twisted 6 grooves, whereas the M60 was with 4 twisted grooves. I heard that international law prohibited using rifles with 6 twisted grooves in wartime battles. The AK-47 also had 4 grooves.

barbie~~
The twist has noting to do with lethality

Wrong again. The 5.56 isn't even designed to kill it is designed to hurt the target so it takes more people to remove them to safety

Also from first hand experience I was infantry for 7.5 years including 2.5 of them in Iraq the 7.62x39 causes much more damn age then the 5.56x45 and the 5.45x39 ( the AK74 round) is even nastier.

Please stop passing stories from anti gun groups that have no clew about ballistics or how guns work....

Where did you find this hogwash ? Do you know every nation on that list Uses the 5.56 nato (same round the M16 uses) as their military rifle cartridge?????? And some of them use the 5.45x39 that is more powerful and has better terminal ballistics the. The 5.56 do to the air gap in the top of the projectile

Speaking of old wive's tales...

5.56 was designed to kill

7.62x39 causes less damage due to lower kinetic energy (the V squared term really wins here) and no fragmentation.

7.62x39 does punch through foliage and cover better though.

My credentials: Also an Iraq vet (19D), and I happen to know a lot more about physics than the average person.

Im a gunsmith and have training in terminal ballistics and no the 55gr 5.56 wasn't made to kill go and read the pentagon reports on the program. (I have a copy on my computer if you what to read it it is long but informative)

I have shot people with the 5.56 and seen people shot with the x39 and I'd take being hit with the 5.56 any day over the x39 esp at CQB ranges 2' - 50 yards ware the M998 pokes nice little holes do to the penetrator being designed to punch threw Russian body armor  so the round holders together to well till it reaches 150-200 yards where it is in its destabilization threshold where the round tumbles and brakes up.

The 7.62 x39 doesn't have less energy than the 5.56. Not from my knowledge. The 7.62 x 51 or 308 Winchester beats all of those. Then there are hunting cartridges that are far worse than 5.56 or 7.62 Russian. I've seen what my .30-06 and 444 marlin do and there's no surviving a CoM hit with hunting ammo and there are more powerful stuff from there.

The thing is, many of these countries listed use rifles which fire the same round (5.56x45) as the M4/M16.  Ireland for instance uses the Steyr AUG in 5.56, Belgium uses the FN SCAR-L in 5.56 but Cambodia, which is on that list, does use the M16.  I don't understand why a country would consider a weapon inhumane but use another weapon firing the same bullet.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_rifle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_rifle)

Calling a rifle bullet inhumane is amusing considering all the other "humane" ways we have devised to eviscerate people in war.

Yes. It sounds oxymoron.

I remember that, for my Ph.D. thesis, I had to submit the animal protocol by which I euthanize billions of anchovy larvae which are anyway killed while being sampled in the plankton net . It was rejected initially but finally approved after several modifications. Technically anchovy is vertebrate, requiring an euthanasia procedure.

It will be rational that human killing would require stricter standards. Yes. The ideal and the real never coincide.

Finish is much better than the light picked up in the photo. Prefer the old vintage design in aesthetics than some of the newer ones. Very sad they stopped making these recently though.

I enjoy firearms. I'm plinker first and paper puncher second. Did a couple of years of Cowboy Action shooting (20 years ago), I don't know if the local Club would accept me or not since transition (I was physically larger than most of the male competitors back then) and finding feminine late 1800's clothing in my size will be very difficult. I still have and enjoy my single action revolvers as well as my lever action rifle and side by side shotgun.

Overall I still get more grins per hour with the .22 and .17 rimfire guns than the larger calibers. I do have a soft spot for my .357 Maximum single shot TC pistol.

I recently went overboard in re-starting my airgun hobby. The one's I have now are charged up using a SCUBA Tank, typically referred to as a PCP (Pre-Charged Pneumatic) air guns.

I have one that is a .357 and can achieve 200 fpe (foot pounds of energy) using a 145 gn Nosler Ballistic Tip, it is a beast!

The .177 and .22  airguns are more fun and economical to shoot (not cheap to purchase), costing 1.5 cents to 4 cents per pellet depending on the quality and caliber of the pellet. Pellet velocities are around 900 fps (feet per second) and are reasonably quite as they are subsonic and most of them have sound moderation.

I do believe in ownership responsibility and have my firearms in a safe and my airguns in a locked metal cabinet.

A local group rents a shooting range so they can have a Heels and Handguns event (sometimes it's miniskirts and maximum noise  ;)  )

Ever see Paul Harrell on You Tube or Dave Atkinson(aka the Yankee marshal)? They don't live very far from you. I joined the pink pistols for a bit. Not many trans people and a few of the gay guys complained that trans people were joining. They said t shouldn't be part of lgb. To me, it seemed more like a pick up/hook up deal for the gay men in it. It was the first time I saw real division in lgbt and I was surprised.

Anyone looking for a pretty good home defense gun which won't break the bank and meets those pesky 10 round limits some states have imposed?  Currently there are a large number of Star BM 9mm pistols being imported into the US.  They are Spanish Guardia Civil turn ins and you can usually find them in the $200-250 range. Finish on them varies but you can usually find a pretty nice one.

The bm is a pretty solid surplus pistol.  Nothing fancy but durable and pretty reliable.  Expect to have to give it a thorough cleaning when you get it, maybe a new magazine spring and recoil spring while you're at it.

I enjoy shooting, but I know nothing about guns. I want to get a nice air rifle sometime, but that's it.

Interestingly, I was on the rifle team in high school. I was our best shot, but I quit because I was the only one who wasn't a paranoid nutjob when it came to firearms. When I casually mentioned that I'm not getting a real gun unless I already have a secure safe for it, my teammates lost their minds. "How will you get to it if someone breaks in?!?!" Well, for starters, I don't want to kill people over material things. If someone breaks in, I'm calling the cops and complying. Hoo boy, that did not go over well. When they found out I'm in favor of stricter gun control, that was the end for me.

And that's why I only want an air rifle. I hate the attitude of most gun owners, at least those here in the deep south. They probably STILL think Obama is personally going to come take their guns away.

The biggest mistake I believe you can make as a transperson is assuming that 3 guys breaking into your house in the middle of the night are only after your TV set. The reality is they might be after you. I know a woman who lives up here, in the deep blue state that I live in, who was accosted from her apartment and dragged into the woods and gang raped. It's an unreported crime because she lives in fear from retaliation. I have also seen the trepidation in her face from simply being out and about. Don't mess with your life and don't bring a BB gun to a gun fight or even a knife fight. PS: I also served on jury duty for a case involving a woman who was a victim of aggravated rape and what it did to her was gut wrenching. She never leaves the house, can't hold down a job and so on. Would you deny either of those people the ability to have defended themselves from their attackers and left to suffer emotional trauma for the rest of their lives?

I get that, but I still think it's verging on paranoia to keep a gun at the ready. If someone tries to break in, there's going to be more than enough time to get a safe open. That also buys enough time for my hypothetical roommate or partner to let me know it's just him or her. Most accidental killings are of people who are mistaken for intruders.

A zen saying, one of the greatest mistakes we make in life is assuming we have time.  Sorry, but someone breaking in to your home is not going to allow you free access to get to your safe.  If I had no life experience, I might be able to empathize with your point of view...but service taught me that you are either prepared, or you are a victim.  Every officer I worked with has a "gun at the ready", why?  Why would they not keep it in a safe, locked up and not accessible?  Because that would render it useless and they know better than to trust luck with their families lives.

What do agree with is requiring training and drilling.  I have a very nice flashlight at the ready as well and am trained, yes...formally trained to not shoot unintended targets.  My transition has not dulled or invalidated it.  My friends that stuck around that are also trained have seen the stats on assaults and murders, they know we really are a hunted prey.

In the end, make a choice to either trust in luck or trust in yourself.  Either way, it is not a decision that really has any bearing on me.  I do not have faith...in my luck.

So let this be a warning to all of you: don't keep your wallet in reach while using the internet under the influence of pain killers after surgery.

The friend I was staying with after SRS had an old A2 upper receiver for an AR15 laying around collecting dust and gave it to me while I was there.  I had a few of the other parts in the safe already at home but decided that I just HAD to make a clone of my basic training M16A2.

So I got home, found a box full of handguards, a stock, a shiny new barrel, etc... on the porch, and remembered "Oh yeah..."

Now I can go plink targets without a drill sergeant screaming at me.  And without those lovely glasses that I had to wear.  Well once I heal up a bit more anyway.

I used to reload my own ammo. .357 Mag, .380, 30-06, .308, 7.62x25mm, 7.62x39mm. I was never very good with a handgun, but I was very good with a long gun. I took third place out of 23 in a DCM match years ago. I used to recover spent .223 cases, trim them to size and reneck them for 7.62x25 Tokarev, aka Broomhandle round. I herd it was the most powerful handgun round until the .357 Mag.

I grew up in a family with guns and hunting. I learned how to operate and respect them at a very young age. We had lots of fun.

Guns where I live are mere tool similar to a powersaw, Hammer whatever, it's a way I harvest a years worth of meat and don't go to the grocery store for it but just go in my backyard. And the stuff you get out of the wild is unlike anything else that comes from a factory or is plastic wrapped it's got to be healthy or it just wouldn't exist out in the wilderness.
I have been hand loading as long as I can remember and as taught by my father a World War II vet. A great respect for firearms everybody knows that Michigan is the gun crazy state and up here in the UP when I first moved up in 94 on opening day of firearm deer season nothing was open, schools and  businesses near Skeleton Crew and no traffic at all everybody was out to harvest some venison. I have far too many pistols rifles shotguns to even begin to list but I have got reloading dies and equipment for all of them that should last me well beyond my lifetime.
In Michigan we have concealed carry but I see no need for it whatsoever up where I live and no longer carry that license  it's more of a liability than a need.
my favorite handgun is my glock 10 MM. Which I have worked up many hot loads. But as taught in my concealed carry class only use Factory ammo because if you ever need to use it you'll be made out to be like a mad scientist or something. In that gun I prefer my 175 grain Winchester silvertips moving out of the muzzle at 1275 FPS, which duplicates the ballistics of that load in .41 magnum but I got 16 in semi-auto mode.
My favorite deer rifle is my REM 700
Stainless synthetic bolt-action chambered in .270 WIN. With a verX1 Leopold 3.5 to 10 power on top of it. My pet load is 130 gr Barnes X bullet a top 60.0 grains of R-22 giving it a velocity of 3150 FPS averaging through my chronograph, and consistently prints half inch to three quarter inch five-shot groups at a hundred yards
Also when you got black bear nose prints and paw prints all over your glass door wall I keep my little 12-gauge with ounce and a quarter slugs there just in case they want to come through.

Up here in the Michigan Bush guns are just practical tools that are used to reap the benefits of the Woods similar to a power saw reaping firewood, and something else that's really cool up here there's equal amounts of male and female hunters for deer it's so traditional up here and deeply embedded into the society.

And don't you just love that Tannerite impact explosive pretty powerful stuff.

I sure do hate killing anything and always go for the clean quick kill but somehow the Bucks are moving at about 40 miles an hour but I usually only fire one shot a year and somehow connect. I always walked up to the down deer literally in tears saying a little Indian prayer I've learned from some friends  that remember the old ways, up here living on the reservation.
Love you all Tatiana

You have to be careful here.  While the 7.62 Tokarev and the .30 Mauser cartridges are physically interchangeable the Tokarev is loaded to FAR higher pressures.  There have been many C96 Mauser pistols destroyed by people who didn't know better using inexpensive surplus Tokarev ammo in them.

Awesome thread Devlyn
It's nice having some fun with this and getting away from the TG stuff.
I still have my Sheridan Silver Streak 5 mm that I bought when I think I was about 10 and spent $70 for it which is a heck of a lot of money when your 10. It's still works great to this day after 46 years I just love the Beeman lathe turned PowerPoint pellets that fly very true just have to get the trajectory right for anything that's 50 yards or farther. Just remember keep one pump it during storage as recommened by the manufacturer.
It still works great for me after all these years and it's a lot of fun plinking with when you don't want the
.22  or anything larger.

Thanks for your very cool thread Devlyn

M14! Awesome rifle. 7.62x51mm NATO (.308) clip fed. Who could ask for anything more? I am a big fan of the BAR. 30-06 clip fed, OH YES!!! Love my M1 Garand. Also gas operated. I hated the 8 round en-bloc clip though.

OMG Donica,
Any friend of the BAR has to be a friend of mine also. I don't possess the gerand or the BAR, but I do have a World War II era .30 carbine in the 7.62 straight walled cartridge that pales in performance to the .30 06.
But it still was a highly effective carbine for short-range and it's six and a half pound weight sure made it easy to carry. Gen. Patton did say that the gerand was the best battle Implement ever developed.

When I was living in lower Michigan a long time ago I did have the privilege to witness personally the highly coveted MG-42 which was also known by our GI,s as Hitler's buzzsaw. The one I seen was shooting at around 1400 rounds per minute but they can go as high as 1800. It really doesn't sound like a gun, it sounds more like slowly ripping canvas then any individual shots being perceived, but not quite like a mini gun.
This high rate of fire was achieved by not only using recoil operated assist then it also use gas pressure assist similar to AK 47 style. And also had roller bearings on the slide to keep friction down to a minimal. This gun was awesome it could fire it's 150 round belt of 8 mm Mauser, then poppin a new barrel in about 5 to 7 seconds.
This gun was so devastating that the US government created some propaganda to show the GI,s with the video how they could defeat it.  It stated that it's bark was far worse than its bite.
But in reality it's bite is far worse than its bark. The mg42 design has been directly copied by the US resulting in M60 or the pig firing the 7.62 by 54 mm Nato round or .308 win. The US philosophy was they did not want this High rate of fire because they could have two guns firing instead of one being supplied by the same amount of ammunition.
In this large gun shooting in lower michigan, and no it was not associated with the michigan militia, l also witnessed
The Sturmgewerh which was the granddaddy that all other assault rifle are copied off of. It's offered select fire and then an intermediate round that was more powerful than a submachine gun but less powerful than a regular rifle round of its days.
The thinking that, most combat happens within 400 meters, why carry less rounds of something that can reach out to a 1000 meters.
This was the very first assault rifle at the tip of the tree that branchs out into all others.

I better end it now because I could talk about this  stuff all day.
See ya

Hi Donica!...

Yes!... The early M1As were the best and used all original GI parts and often the receivers as well if I remember correctly... later the quality became a bit more hit and miss and no one wanted to talk about where the parts were sourced!... There is a company called LRB in NY that assembles still with GI Parts on original spec forged receivers and they cost considerably more than the Springfields go for.... Really nice though!!!!

http://www.lrbarms.com/

I was lucky with the Springfields I bought... never any issues with jamming except a few issues related to magazines.... aftermarket (non GI ones) were not always the best and plus, in CA we have the 10rd thing so, GI mags were not available unless grandfathered in before the 1st ban!

I was raised around them, so were my kids. To me they are just tools. I would conceal carry but in San Diego County you can't get a permit easily.

So...

In May I applied for a CCW in San Diego County. I used a couple of my experiences with trans bigots as the justification. And, yesterday, got the letter that I was approved for the CCW.

So...

If you live in SD county, and you have had any negative experiences with idiots because of your gender, and you want a CA CCW, I think you might try that same approach. When I applied, the Sheriff's clerk who took the application said that they were unaware of anyone getting their CCW approved with my justification. She said that the very few trans people who had been approved in the past all had restraining orders in place.

Anyway, thought I would share my recent SD County CCW experience.

Love,
Miharu

The Beretta 92 is DA/SA and has a 13 pound trigger pull on the SA. Really tough for me. Even the 8 pound SA on most of the DA/SA Sigs, such as the P229 and P226, can be tough without a lot of practice.

The P320 is VERY easy to shoot, being striker-fired, and has all the Sig quality. While the P229 is still my favorite pistol of all time, the P320 is growing on me...

My question is this.  Do any of you have experience with Sig Sauer?  Are they good, dependable weapons?  Should I be looking at other makes and models? I'm looking to get into a small to medium frame 9mm with light trigger resistance and a reputation for reliability.

I have several Sig handguns. (P226, P229, P320, P250, P239, and used to own a P939.) I also own a Glock 17, an S&W Shield, and a Walther PPK. By far, my favorite of them all is the P229. But it is huge. Unless it is in a purse, bag, or some other container, it is not a concealed carry gun in my opinion. The P320 and P250 are the same size, exactly, since they share everything except firing group, and even they are a bit large. The P320 is Very easy to shoot. The P250 is the exact opposite. The trigger pull is about 2.4 km, and the reset is 2.1 km. (No, not cm, km. It is forever...) Probably the best carry gun of them is the P239, even though the magazine holds only 8 rounds.

All that said, when I actually conceal carry, it is the S&W Shield, because of its size...

So...

Today I did my SD County Sheriff's required CCW Safety training. In SD County, there are 15 or 20 people/companies that provide such training. I ended up with this particular one because our schedules matched so well, and it was a one on one class, so I thought that might be beneficial.

And, I had what might be my most fun/pleasant/encouraging "trans encounter" I have ever had!

We started with introductions. In my intro, I described my work, and then said, "Being transgender, and transitioning rather late, I have had issues with jerks who do not like my existence." The instructor said, "Wait a minute. What did you say?" I said, "About being transgender or the jerks?" He said, "You're transgender? I had no idea..." He then added, "I was a bit confused with the name on the application, but after talking with you, I knew I was talking with a woman."

So, he thought the voice was female, and further thought the voice matched the person. Oh boy...

He is much older than me, and married, or I would have kissed him...

I know this isn't strictly a gun comment, but since I had already mentioned the SD County application, I thought to add the fun story here...

I'm actually trying to find a ciener 22lr conversion for my HP Browning 9mm, just have gotten to expensive to shoot anything other than a 22lr lately for me. I still find it very interesting in south L.A.(yes,I understand why), where I'm living, guns are associated with crime, but from my origins, South Texas, its perfectly accepted, like tools, very different acceptance over there(just the cultural shift is baffling/interesting dynamics).

Anyway, anyone out there selling a Ciener conversion 22lr for a HP Browning?, LOL, I'm in the market, or else I have to go buy me a 22lr revolver. I remember my relatives having a sa/da 22lr revolver, for plinking, varmint hunting, I'm not sure what make, but to this day, I'm just amazed at that blued 8 shot 22lr sa/da revolver in a 4 or 6 inch barrel, with side loading port, the ultimate pennypincher, next to a pellet/bb gun).

As a Air Force security police vet. Yeah, I like guns. Firing a M-60 machine gun is a blast. However I currently only own pistols. 2 38 single action a ruger and a Jennings. I would like to get more but just haven't. Luckily living in WY.  We can carried concealed without a permit. I however want to get my permit. luckily with 9 years military service I don't have to take a CC class.

Continuing my SD County CCW licensing experience...

Yesterday I took all my paperwork in to actually get the CCW permit. One piece of background info: When I applied, one of the pieces of documentation was my "final" letter from the doc about changing the M to an F. During this issuing interview, the clerk, a different one than the last two times I was there, looked through everything and was going over it all with me, when he came to the list of requirements I must meet for renewal in 2 years. One of the renewal requirements listed was an "Updated doctor's letter."

When he said that, I asked what he meant. He pulled out the M to F doctor letter and said an updated one of these. I was dumbfounded. Nearly speechless, which is rare. Updated with what info? Do you think they just take off a little at a time? Do you think there is MORE to say than that original letter? I then said, "There will not be an 'updated' letter, and I think that is an unreasonable request." It took him about 15 seconds of thinking to take off the "updated" letter requirement.

But I even after 24 hours of thinking about it, I am flabbergasted.

Interestingly, in my "Good Cause" statement, required in CA, I had provided links to articles and research saying that our community has more violence done to it than the community at large. Another renewal requirement I have is to provide newer, updated information on that topic. When he told me that, I thought, "If ONLY there are NO updated links for me to provide in two years..."

Anyway, thought I would pass on the story.

Be safe out there...  ;D

I fear for my safety.

This was what convinced me to get the CCW. It doesn't happen often, but last spring, coming out of a restaurant, I thought two young guys were going to chase me. I ran to my car and jumped in. I sat there and broke down and cried in my fear. Then I was angry as I could see the two guys laughing at me. I consciously thought, "I do NOT want to live in fear..."

Would I still run in that same situation? You betcha! But if next time, they were between me and the safety of my car, I would know I have an option...

And, I live in north San Diego county which is about as safe a place for transgender people as there is on the planet. Geesh...

So, Donica, if you fear for your safety, jump through whatever hoops you need to in order to reduce that fear. The hoops are far less painful than the possible alternatives.

Yes, I do want to be able to defend myself but I really don't want to carry a gun anymore. After a little research online, I found that pepper spray IS legal in all 50 states. However! California has special rules about pepper spray. We can own and carry no more than a 2.5 oz can. I found an online distributor that sells and ships to California. They are called "The Pepper Spray Store".

Maybe one day Katie, I'll jump through the hoops and get a CA. CCW. I miss my cute little Colt .380 Mustang. As I used to reload my own ammo, My cute little Colt .380 Mustang wasn't so little  ;D.

This is not correct.

Pepper spray is legal to use in California but only in self defense situations.  Pepper spray must be in a container that holds no more than 2.5 ounces of the chemical.

California law does prohibits several classes of people from buying, possessing, or using pepper spray:
people convicted of a felony or any assault crime, in California or any other state or in the federal system; and those convicted of misusing the spray (in non-self defense situations)

minors (except minors over 16 years old, who may purchase and possess pepper spray as long as their parent is present or gives written permission), and

those addicted to any narcotic drug.

So unless you are in one of the prohibited groups you may legally carry pepper spray for self defense.

And it's one of the reasons why I'll never live in CA. The right to defend yourself, property and others is a liberal concept. Restricting rights is not. Unfortunately it's a tribal thing and if you don't buy into the whole narrative, it's a problem. It's a shame there are no true liberal places to live.

It's one of my non-negotiables, even when I got married. Motorcycles too. I find that if you have a right and you give it up, it's hard or impossible to get back. I grew up in NY and it's much more restrictive than where I live now vis a vis firearms. Is NY better for trans issues? Yes, but I moved 16 years ago and couldn't go back if I wanted to. Too expensive and it's gotten worse regulations and tax wise. As far as weather goes, Santa Cruz is about perfect, but that place can be both expensive and nutty.

I had a HK 91 with the collapsible stock back in the day as well!... My favorite 7.62 I have owned was a IMI Galil... Bought it in Colorado and sadly had to sell it when I moved back to CA since it was on the original ban list in the 90s :-(

I have preban imbel 762 FNFAL, 2 556 M4s/M16A2s, all in pieces, due to Californias draconian assault weapon laws. No time to register them, so I broken them down into baggies and secured them, completely legal.

Now just shoot a 22lr 10/22 and will look into a SA 22lr revolver, to just plink, when time allows it.

Love weapons too, since my childhood days, shooting at birds and cans, with a crossman 760. Now too broke too shoot any of my 30 caliber rifles, shotguns or  larger caliber pistols or revolvers.

I'm looking at a heritage rough rider 22lr in 6.5 inch barrel blued revolver locally. Have a 10/22 already, hoping ciener will make more 22lr conversions for my 9mm hi power.

Miss them days roaming my grandmother's ranch plinking, birds, snakes, rocks and trees, with my crossman 760 in northeastern mexico.

Simple is good.

This takes me back. When I was in my teens I was in the Full bore rifle  shooting team with my weapon as the Lee Enfield .303 rifle with a Telescopic sight.  In the CCF we also had the Bren LMF Mk 3 and the Sten Mk 5. Great personal weapons. We also had a number of GPMGs MG42. Great weapon, most of which had been captured from the German Army & SS..

Also when growing up, being from the country , we had a pair of  nice shotguns for killing rabbits etc . I just cannot remember what ones they were but I do remember my Dad always telling me to keep them clean and well oiled after we had been out shooting rabbits and me covered in mud in my wellies! From memory I was about 10 or so then.

OK I've been a bit busy lately but here's a few more:

Speaking of great triggers and accurate the top one is a Tanfoglio Stock II.  It's a factory competition pistol meant for IPSC/USPSA.  It's a phenomenal pistol and I've taken it to several big 2 and 3 gun matches.  Below it is possibly the best value in full size pistols going: the CZ P09.  It's just a great shooting pistol, certainly not as fancy as the Tanfo but for the money it really is hard to beat.  It's my go-to pistol for the more physical matches where I really don't want to crawl through gravel with the Tanfo.

Short, sweet, and quiet.  Registered short barrel rifle Vector Mini UZI with an AAC Avenger suppressor, and an SBR CZ Skorpion Evo 3 with an AAC TiRant-45

FN FS2000 with a YHM Phantom 762 suppressor and Aimpoint PRO, affectionately named the tactical space tuna.  I placed 11th out of 115 with this rifle and my P09 at this year's Desert Brutality 2 gun match in Phoenix.

Finally one I saw in the used display at a Cabela's somewhere: a Dreyse 1907 .32 ACP.  It's just adorable in an ugly sort of way and I couldn't resist buying it for $100 or so.

It's a crowd pleaser at matches since the FS2k is kind of a collector's item now and nearly nobody has a suppressor on them.  But it has to share it with my .300 blk AR shorty, my .308 AR, and my 6.5 Creedmoor AR.  I really should invest in another big rifle can since this one is so stinking heavy.

It's interesting that as women our carry options change somewhat. I have a Commander and Hi Power. Both are on the dense and heavy side for concealed carry. Thinking of a m&p shield sub compact in 9mm or 45. Kahr has a sub compact 45 too. Then there's a Taurus model 605 or 856. We'll see.

9mm Shield is my carry choice.

I like it a lot for its size, but the factory trigger sucked. I put in an Apex trigger, and it became completely acceptable...

Isn't it? I went from carrying a Glock 20, or a 1911, some times even a dual date Luger, now because of the wardrobe change I have three I rotate, a Naa ranger 2, a .327 Ruger lcr and 9mm Sheild. The ranger is nice for when I feel lazy and just want to put it in my pocket, when the darn jeans have pockets..... As for the rest I loved guns ever since my uncle handed me and my cousin a .410 and we shot the fence in half, I used to come home from every gun show with a arm load of military surplus rifles, I mean come on who could pass up $40 mosin's and $90 mausers...... even won the local lotto once and ran right out and bought a semi auto 1919 browning. But I screwed up my shoulder one day now I can't steady a rifle to well, so I sold a lot of the rifles except for the really rare ones. Before that I had no trouble hitting the 350 yard gong with a old Spanish mauser.

Over a decade with the military and a hunter all my life... I've fired a few rounds down range lol. Love shooting my .338 Lapua Mag over 1000 yards. Although my best shot ever (live round and not simulated) was at 750yards on a yote that was responsible for taking down a cow with thier buddies on my buddies farm. 3 shots and all 3 weren't going to be causing any more trouble. 300, 530 and 750 moving with a .243 Roger M77 modified.

A very personal, side question, if I might:

If you do actually concealed carry, where do you carry?

The Well-Armed Woman site says about half of us carry some place on the waist, and that is fine, but then, where on the waist?

Knowing the purse carry is not only slow to access, but also easy to take, I have been carrying IWB at 6:00 o'clock. However yesterday, I was going through some advanced training with my CCW instructor, who after watching me said, "As long as it took you to present the weapon from  6:00 o'clock, from the standard 21 feet, I could have slowly walked over to you, beat the snot out of you, and raped you before you got that weapon out."  Yes, I had practiced, and yes, it was smooth, but it was not fast.

So I thought what about 3:00 o'clock? Even with my whimpy hips, they still stick out farther than anything else below my shoulders, and so even IWB the gun prints really badly.

So, what about appendix carry? To date, all of the arteries that get muzzled most of the time have kept me from doing that.

So, I moved everything to 4:00 - 4:30, OWB. MUCH faster than any of the IWB. As long as I stand straight there is very little printing. But with "slinkier" softer fabric tops (which are virtually all of my tops), bending over still prints. And by "bending over" I don't mean 90 degrees at the waist. (Going all the way to tthe ground, I do try to be lady-like and always act like I have a skirt on.) But even leaning over the counter prints pretty well.

So I would love the voice of experience from this community.

Thank you for your insights!!

Katie

3 o'clock is impossible to hide unless you're wearing a coat in my experience.  I go for the 4:30ish area.

I tried the ~2 o'clock appendix carry and just found it to be uncomfortable.

With the print issue you're having you may need to get a slightly lower riding holster if possible.  Of course that slows down the draw.

Personal nitpick about the 21 foot "golden" rule: it's crap no matter who considers it gospel.  Even a practiced person is going to have a lot of trouble identifying a threat then drawing from an easily accessed duty holster in time to stop a determined attacker coming from 21 feet away.

Depends on what I'm carrying. I will carry the ranger 2 in the coin pocket of my jeans, if my jeans don't have one I carry it at 3 oc in a iwb holster. it only leaves a tiny bump that don't really show. If I carry my lcr or shield it's in a leather iwb holster at the 4-5 oc position. Its's kinda dangerous to carry at the 6 oc position because if they manage to knock you down you could land on your gun and end up paralyzed. But as were getting into the cooler months you should haven no problem carrying in the 3 oc position, with some sort of cover garment, flannel, light jacket. If you really want to 3 oc carry you could try something like a LCP, I've had one and it was so small it just kind of blended in, but with hands that point to the larger side it wasn't comfortable for me to shoot. I haven't tried a belly band yet but I've seen a couple that look promising. You really do have to tailor your wardrobe around carrying as a female.

I have just recently purchased a new small hammer-less semi-auto pistol to conceal carry in my purse.
I decided on buying a Taurus Curve Model 180 is a cute and light (13 ounces) little thing,....
.380 auto (9mm short) , double action, 6 round magazine.

This is not a pistol that I take with me on my hikes to defend against dangerous wildlife but is useful to defend against more human-like dangers and small animals... and since it is so small and light it is a firearm that is easily concealable and can be carried in my purse, which means that I will have it with me most of the time, as long as I have my purse with me.  It is essentially only most useful for short range close encounters for self-defense.

So this is my concern about purse carry. Your small Taurus is good for short range close encounters. But drawing from the purse takes me more time than drawing from 6:00 o'clock on the waist. People talk about shooting from inside the purse, but there are loads of problems with that too. (There has to be nothing in the purse the exiting bullet could hit, only one shot because semi-autos won't cycle inside the purse, possible damage to your firing hand, etc)

At 21 feet (which we all agree has problems as a standard, but it does give a reference point), you get 1 to 1.5 seconds to get your gun out. I have practiced at 3:00 o'clock OWB, with concealment, to present the gun and get 2 shots to center mass in 1 second or less. At 4:00-5:00 o'clock OWB, that goes to 3 seconds. At 6:00 o'clock IWB, that goes to 5 or more seconds, which is about the same as drawing from a purse. I think that in an actual 2-legged adversary attack, I won't have 5 seconds...

Wow Danielle nice group
I don't think I could keep it that tight with my Colt Mustang also in .380.
But it's got a pretty crappy sight picture that I know I could improve but don't really have the need to.

Bear hunting season started up here and I'm heading out right now actually to a friend's Bear Camp where I'm not going to be hunting but just be part of the recovery team.
I already got a couple nice mounts and a bear rug and are excellent eating but I think I'm done hunting them because they just come right in and it's like shooting fish in a barrel.
But if there's anything that can really get your heart going it's going out after a bear that someone else shot.
Of course it's going to be dark And the bear always runs into the thickest stuff or swamp so I think I'll bring my little 12 gauge and my glock model 20 in 10 mm as a last-ditch backup. But we're pretty used to this stuff up here.
The weather just turned colder and I think tonight's the night.
See ya. Time to head out.

That's where the ability to recognize the current environment you are in can save your life. When we are in a less than favorable environment, we must always aware of everything and everyone that is around us. If you can recognize that there is a possible threat, you can already have your hand in your purse with your hand on your weapon. I'm certain I can pull my weapon out of my purse and fire at least 2 rounds at center of mass within 1 second. And if the threat dissolves, on one will be the wiser.

The 21' rule assumes you stand there. One can practice moving back while drawing. Also, drawing and firing single hand while using the weak hand to defend might be useful. Anything that gives one more time.

I have a bianchi pancake holster and a fobus paddle holster for my commander. I haven't used it en femme. It's probably too heavy, at least for the way I would dress en femme. I'd want something close to half that weight. Maybe a snubbie in 357 or a sub compact 9mm/45.

For bear country, I'd get at least a 44 mag or a 454 casul, 4" barrel loaded with heavy bullets.

I took an advanced pistol class taught by Jerry McCown of Gunsite a long time ago and that was something he taught.  Identify the threat, back away while drawing (if needed), stiff arm or block the threat with your weak arm and fire from retention with your strong hand.  Don't contact shoot with a semi auto or exposed hammer revolver as you can potentially cause a malfunction.  That was a really fun class.

Surprised about the revolver advice. They usually go bang. Autos, yes. I just read a bear attack story where a guy had a Glock in 10mm and the gun malfunctioned due to bear fur getting in it from contact fire. He cycled it and it worked, but he got chewed up pretty good. Bear ended up dead eventually, but absorbed a lot of lead.

It's because a hammer could get clothing caught between it and the transfer bar or firing pin.  Unlikely but still something to be mindful of.

And while I do love the Glock 20 and the 10mm auto catridge (that's my bear and lion country carry piece as well), it's still just a pistol.  They can still malfunction and compared to a long arm, they're just not all that powerful.

Not enough gun for a bear.

It's definitely not the gun I would carry if I meant to go pick a fight with a bear, but it's a pretty portable and relatively powerful thing to have when I am looking to enjoy nature and avoid them.

Your brave carrying a pistol in bear country. I travel through bear country,  you'll see me packing a 300 Win Mag, up north, deserts and wide open plains, a 308 or lesser caliber.

I fear mothernature more then I fear man.

Sometimes I even go on hikes with nothing but a pocket knife.

Do I enjoy danger?  Or do I just like a challenge?  ;)

I do too, but the worst we have here are coyote, snakes and javalina. I usually hike kilted with a boot knife in my kilt hose. If I ever see a cougar I'll remember to bring my Commander next time. :)

I have one kid at NAU. I work at ASU. The weather in Flag is nicer when it's hot and sometimes when it's not, but I don't care for Tucson. Been to Lemmon. Crazy road. I wouldn't mind having a place on Lake Mary Rd, but it'll have to wait.

My daughter went to school at NAU, and now works there. seems like a pretty close-knit community, and sometimes a bit closed of a community...

Flagstaff is seriously nice, I think, even when they get 300 inches of snow...

I like flag but it's way overpriced for what it is and there's more lowlifery there than where I live now. Williams is more affordable, but I do like the vibe downtown in flag. In a year, my daughter should be graduating, so I'll have fewer reasons to go there. Some day I'd like to get a cabin/small place near there.

I do love Flagstaff, even with getting "spare changed" in the parking of just about everywhere.  My girlfriend and I visited last year and I can't believe how many breweries are there now.  I drowned my sorrows after many a soul crushing exam at Mother Road and Beaver Street Brewery but now there's a bunch more.  And they're pretty great.

However the competition shooting scene there kind of sucks.  Or it did 4-5 years ago.  There was a USPSA club starting up and the guys running it really tried but they just didn't have the facility needed to succeed.  Of course being able to go out to the cinder fields, hang a gong on a hill and go smack it around from 800+ yards away was always a good time.

Flag has a higher minimum wage and it's caused prices of lots of stuff to go up, even McDonalds.

Between my hubby and I, we have five firearms, but all for hunting. We only hunt what we'll eat. Lol, up until two months ago, I owned a .22, .308 and 12ga, but then got hubby to take hunting course. Now he has a .22 and a shotgun.
We love this time of year. Small game is plenty - grouse and rabbit, bear, and of course moose. Unfortunately, two things I'll miss hunting as we moved really far north, there are no deer or turkeys.

I wouldn't kill a food species for no reason, but I do enjoy plinking invasive species like the English Sparrow. They've virtually eliminated our native Eastern Bluebirds, and that's a crying shame.

Like I said before Devlyn awesome thread.
Don't sweat it to much about those Savage mobs of sparrows, I think your the same age as I am. I'm sure you remember the movie, The 🐦 Birds. lol

Hi Nina
It sure does sound like you and your hubby have all the bases covered with your choices of calibers and a shotgun.
And I see you also enjoy shooting a bow. Many firearm Gunners underestimate the killing power of a bow and arrow.
The last thing I shot with my PSE bow was a real nice black 🐻bear from 30 yards. But you want to know what the funny thing was, that bear didn't make it nearly as far as the other two I shot with my .270. with my handloads of a 150 grain Barnes X bullet atop 58 grains of R22, giving it a velocity of 3050 FPS.
But I have shot a heck of a lot of bucks in the 25 years living here but also many nice corn-fed bucks in the farmlands of Southern Michigan. I have a pic of a nice buck that my wife stuck with an arrow down there.
But running off of a phone I'll probably have to just stick it as my avatar for a little bit to let you see it.
The buck looks absolutely enormous and it is with it's swollen neck and nice rack. He also looks enormous because he went over 300 pounds live weight and my wife is like 4 ft 11 in and weighs 75 lb soaking wet.lol
It's been a pleasure making your acquaintance and I'm sure we'll talk again in the future.

Hello Sonadora
Congratulations on your purchase of your Savage chambered in the mighty .338 Lapua Magnum.
It sure does sound like a lot of gun for California but if your shot placement is hitting where you want it sounds wonderful and supports the BBB Theory (bigger bullet better)
I personally don't feel under Gunned with my .270 or even my bow with any game in North America.
But I'm sure glad you got a muzzle brake on that monster remember about the potential 30% loss of muscle mass. lol
But I'm sure you won't have any problem with it. Isn't it funny that when we shoot our rifles from a bench rest we get pounded pretty bad. But when you're shooting at game it feels like a pop gun.
It's been a real pleasure making your acquaintance and I'm sure we'll talk again someday probably about gun stuff.

I wouldn't worry too much Katie about your daughter going to college and receiving 300 inches of snow in the winter. Michigan Technological University isn't too far from me and I've actually seen some bad Winters where they had to have a tunnel system between the buildings.
But just a little north of there, there's a scale size thermometer to show the record snowfall.
That was 390 in of snow which equates to 32 and a half feet.
And actually right now it's snowing hard to beat the band.yay!
All the best to you and your daughter

Hunting season is upon us may everyone's jams be non-existent and their shots straight and safe.

Love Tatiana

Hey Tatiana,

Yea, I will get that lapua by the end of this month. Cali is something else. They make you get a firearms safety test for any weapon bought, legal in cali, and make you get a handgun safety test. I guess too many people were shooting themselves in the foot or others.
I myself am a former usmc mp, 5811, which the top stuff is ridiculous to me.
We use to call the top stuff, weapons safety handing procedures, among other stuff, that went under the big umbrella of weaponscraft and fieldcraft for military police. Now I have to brush up in how to put glass and zero the glass on this lapua and get my dope in it. Will eventually get around to put glass in it.

I just could not pass up on this savage 338 lapua, for $1300 it would be like passing on new, unused manolos blahnik stylish wedges for $100.

Nope, it was not going to happen, like when I got an ltr in 308 without the scope. Moneys tight, but not tight enough for a bargain Remington ltr at $800.

Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

PS. Jr or the 338 lapua is my last weapons buy in cali, they don't sell Sr or the 5-10 rd 50 bmg in cali, just the 1 shot bmg.

Hi Sonadora
I know exactly what you mean some things that you come across you just got to have.
With all your experience I'm certain you're aware of all the potential of this 26in Barrel monster
It's definitely exotic and desirable, and I bet it won't sound like your neighbors rifles. lol
I've heard some countries adopted the ever impressive .338 Lapua Magnum. as their long range sniper rifle.
If you're into reloading let me know I acquired a ton of big caliber bullets from a deceased neighbor and eBay didn't exactly like me trying to list any of them even though they're completely safe so I really have no use for them if you want them just PM me and I'll send them out now flat rate box no big deal.

Have fun with that ever impressive Beast it'd be fun to hear what range it can reach out and touch.
Who said girls can't shoot straight remember Annie Oakley. lol
See ya love Tatiana

One option for US Navy SEALs is the McMillan Tac-338 .338 Lapua Magnum (27" barrel).  The .338 was the rifle Chris Kyle used to make a 2100 yard shot outside of Sadr City.

The British use the .338 LM along with several other countries.  It's one heck of a cartridge for sure, and nicely covers the middle ground between something like a 7.62 NATO and the .50BMG.

Of course in the states we had to be special snowflakes and adopt the .300 Winchester magnum because "made in MURICA" or something like that.  It's certainly an improvement over the 7.62 chambering but not quite as much oomf as the .338LM.

I can only buy a 338 LM in California,  until I move out of California, then I could buy me a 50 bmg, 5 shot magazine, cin cali they only offer the 1 shot 50 bmg.(nah).

I have two rifles, a shotgun, and a pistol.
I used to go dear hunting.  My in laws had 100 aces of forst in northern Wisconsin with a deer shack on it.  We used to go hunting there.
I will give the rifles to my son, because he still lives in Minnesota and goes hunting there.  I now live in SW Florida, and the deer they have here are barely larger than a medium sized dog.  I don't like to shoot at animals that look like a pet!

I keep the shotgun and the pistol as self defense devices.  The crime rate here is a little higher than up north, and I have a tactical flashlight on my shotgun, and am ready for the thugs to come.  My main defense system is my dog, a mixture between Rottweiler and Great Dane.  This dog scares the UPS  and Fed Ex men away, and I don't think thugs would want to pick a fight with it either.

I have the pistol and the dog with me when I travel in my motorhome (I like to boon-dog).

Ahhh, someone else who appreciates archery. I love the sporting aspect of it, because it takes skill, ability to stalk quietly, and in my opinion, it levels the playing field. Anyone can bag game with a firearm, but try with a bow from 30-50 yards. That's skill.
My first compound was a PSE Stinger X. Now I'm using a Bowtec Carbon...super light.

Hi Nina! I used to have a Bear 80lb compound a few years back. It has always been a family tradition. We all had long bows, recurves bows and compounds bows. I loved it. My older brother hunts both rifle and bow season for deer and bear. I think one or two years they did wild boar.

I just finished building a .300 Blackout AR pistol.  I used a new Ruger lower, a Palmetto States Armory upper with a 7.5" barrel and their AR lower parts kit with a wrist brace.  Instead of the usual two stage military type AR trigger included in the kit, I used a drop-in type Velocity Triggers single stage with a 3 lb. pull.  It should be interesting.

Wow, just found this thread.  Kind of surprised by the number of shooters here.  I've slowly collected a number of firearms over the past 25 years.  I refer to my collection as a blackhole.  Only two have every escaped - a Glock 33 that I traded toward a Sten Mk II and a Glock 26 that was my wife's.  We sold it to fund her Glock 42.  I'm a whole lot better with a rifle than I am with a pistol.  I can shoot expert on the Army's M9, but I can't seem to shoot straight with any of my pistols except for my P226.  Everything goes low left.  Need more practice. We own 20 acres and my first priority was establishing a range.  Now, I can go to the range dressed as I wish!  It's very liberating.

Has anybody of you any experience with this website and the organization.  Now that i don't wear pants anymore, I have to start to think about possibilities to carry a gun with me.  I also found that i have lost quite a bit of grip strength, and have a hard time to handle my 350.  I wonder if a small revolver (as light weight as possible) would suit me better as a self defense weapon?

Any idea or suggestions about these thoughts?

My advice is to use the most gun you can shoot well. Not sure what a 350 is. Find a place where you can rent guns to shoot or maybe you have a friend that has a collection and you can try a variety of guns. What's nice about a revolver is that when one pulls the trigger it goes bang. Autos can too, but there's more room for error. The thing about light guns is that they kick more.

I just took a concealed firearms class on Saturday with my Bestie @SassyCassie. Way back in the dim past I won a few marksmanship awards with .22 rifles and handguns, and when the opportunity came up to take the class for free I said why not?

I'll go ahead and apply for the permit despite not owning a handgun right now. I have two .22 rifles and a 20ga over-under shotgun, but when I get the cash I'll probably get a small and light handgun.

We fired a Glock 22 .40 pistol in the class and it felt nice, though maybe a little bigger than I need. After not having gone shooting for years, I was pleased with my grouping, though it was a bit short range.

I'm not a member of any gun organizations and don't plan to be. I'm not a gun collector, but I do understand them and am comfortable with them. As a 60-year-old 5 foot 5 inch woman, the thought of being able to defend myself without getting too close is comforting.

I am not a member of any gun association either, and for sure, I don't want to be a member of the NRA!
But I do have guns, and I used to have a Concealed Carry Permit.  I let this expire, because my Bersa pistol is simply to heavy (in my opinion) to carry around with me just for a possible self defense situation, which I might never encounter.  I am still about 6' tall (and i like to wear 2 to 3 inch high heels), and can do a mean handbag swing at any aggressor  ;D!  But the handbag will not cut it for every situation.  I am a trans woman and as such a way more pron person for any violent aggression than I was when presenting as male.
when I carry a handgun around with m, it is not to do any renditions of the OK Coral shooting in case of a mass shooter, but just for my individual self defense.  My instructor way back when said, if you don't stop the aggressor with two rounds, you will not do it with 3 or 4 of them either.
That means, I do not need a big clip for many rounds, a standard revolver should do just fine.  Weight reduction is for me the most important factor, to make carrying a gun around to be not a burden.  The finest CC permit has no value, if the gun is left laying at home.  And with the newer versions of .22 amo one can achieve top stopping power even with a .22 handgun.  And those guns are light and small enough to be comfortably carried around in a purse.  Ideally would be of course, to buy those special gun carry purses for women, but those things are very expensive, and that would not allow me to have the fitting purse for every outfit I have.

My only concern with .22 for defense is that the primers are simply not as reliable as a centerfire cartridge.  I have had enough dud primers in .22 ammo (even with high quality ammo) that I would not go that route for self defense.

A good old fashioned aluminum frame .38 special revolver really is hard to beat in a case like yours Linde.  Just don't get the +p high powered ammunition for it.  I am not sure if that stuff is more painful for the shooter or the target when fired out of a lightweight revolver.

Well, I actually hold a degree in weapons. My degree is Aircraft Armament Systems Technology from the Community College of the Air Force. I have dealt with many types of weapons, from small caliber personal firearms to much larger forms of ordinance (like 20mm Vulcan Cannons, Air to Air as well as Air to ground missiles, bunker buster bombs like the 2,000 pound GBU-31, and even nuclear devices)

So naturally I have a big passion for weapons. I also have a strong belief in proper firearm training and safety. Before the first time a person even touches my weapons I go through a lengthy discussion about how the firearm works, how to break it down and reassemble it, any safety feature (including handling measures), how to reload it, as well as recoil they can expect.

I am concerned with the size with anything bigger than a .22.  I do not want to carry this on my body, I remember how uncomfortable it was carrying my pistol.  The thing should fit into my purse, even in a smaller one.

I don't know how big your old fashioned .38 is, but my purses are the restrictions for any dimension.

I used to have a CC from up north.  we had to do several hours shooting to get this.  I do go regularly to a shooting range, and know how the stuff works.

It is nice of you t point this out, but I think most of us here are seasoned people who do not buy and use the first firearm of their life.

I would appreciate it if you could enlighten us more about modern .22 amo vs traditional. 38 o be used for self defense!

I know from way back when that a .22 was considered to be a joke for self defense, but now with the different types of amo to stop a person dead in the tracks, I wonder if this is still the case?

There have been some gun magazine articles recently that have demonstrated that .22 Magnum should have the penetration needed to seriously harm someone. Most people in law enforcement consider .38 special to be the minimum for self defense. Revolvers are simpler to shoot, but semi-auto pistols conceal better and are available in more powerful calibers. Take your choice and practice at the shooting range.

Since we all are talking personal defense, firearms safety is the utmost importance, but let us all consider that if we ever have to shoot someone, even in cases of obvious self defense, there will be a police investigation and lawyers can be very expensive.

Make sure you know the applicable laws in the state where you live. I live in Florida and we have had several well publicized cases of "stand your ground" self defense. No matter who is at fault, each case was very expensive for the defendant and some defendants have been and are continued to be vilified by the news media. Please be very careful out there.  :police:

I don't want to preach to the choir  , but someone needs to say this.

This is very true Dani.  But in many cases in which women have to defend themselves, it seems to be just enough to pull a gun out of the purse to get the thug running!

Very true.

Thugs are cowards and criminals. They only attack unprotected people and they look for an easy mark.

I was invited for Easter dinner at a couple who are retired detectives form Denver.  She is carrying a .22 revolver, and that go me onto the idea for such a thing.  They use amo that explodes upon entrance in a body, almost like a bomb , and the shrapnels continue to travel through the body!  The stuff is not cheap, but one hopefully never needs one of those!

That is the amo I think of, and that should do just fine with a .22.  But if there are even smaller guns around that would accept this kind of amo, that would be what I want!

We don't have a gun shop near by, and I have to find one and take a look on the stuff that is available, and hold it in my hands.  My hands are not very large, about a typical larger sized female hand, but I certainly do not have tiny hands that can hold any toy gun.

A 22 will kill, but stop? With head shots. If that's what you have though, rock on. I've been toying with the idea of a big bore snubnose. Charter arms has a 44 special, 41 mag, 45 acp and 45 colts snubbies. I currently have a Commander in 45acp and h power in 9mm. Both dense full size sidearms. Not great when it gets warmer. In AZ, no permit needed for open or concealed carry, but I do have a permit for out of state travel.

Well a .22 is ok for defensive if you hit certain vital areas. It does have limited penetration power, as you may know. Also it may prove to be less that helpful in defending against  someone who is attacking you that is under the influence of drugs (like pcp).

For me personally I carry a .40 cal as my primary concealed carry weapon. I prefer the higher stopping power and likelihood of dropping a threat to the ground, as this may give me the chance to relocate.

A .38 has a very similar stopping power to the .40 that I carry, and I would recommend it over the .22

How about the size and weight of the different guns.  I want to be able to easily carry it in my purses, and don't want the gun to be the only thing that fits in there.

Well, a .38 cal firearm can come in quite compact sizes. The Walther PPK/S (the original weapon of James Bond) is one such weapon that I will get for a small alternative to my Sig 229 .40 cal.

The specifics of the Walther PPK/S are:

Weight: 630 grams (22 ounces)
Length: 156mm (6.1 inches)
Barrel length: 83mm (3.3 inches)
Width: 30mm (1.2 inches)
Height: 110mm (4.3 inches)
Muzzle velocity: 244m/s (800.5 ft/s)
Magazine capacity: 7

And if you find that you still want to go with the .22 but still like the size, this firearm also comes in .22 cal and .32 cal variations.

I would strongly advise not using this type of ammo in a self-defense situation. this type of ammo may be considered excessive force. Various court systems and layers will state that the point of using a firearm, in regards to self-defense, is to stop the threat and not to cause mutilation (or even kill for that matter, though lethal force is often justified). An FMJ round is often more that enough for most civilian self-defense situations.

Even countries engaged in war have limited the use of these types of rounds. A good example of this is the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907. Convention IV,3 specifically states:

"(IV,3): Declaration concerning the Prohibition of the Use of Bullets which can Easily Expand or Change their Form inside the Human Body such as Bullets with a Hard Covering which does not Completely Cover the Core, or containing Indentations"

Though the United States was the only country not to ratify this particular convention.

Nah. It's a too complicated subject for me to explain with my phone, but you basically want a bullet to expand at the velocity it produces in your gun while penetrating well enough. The g2 doesn't penetrate well and if you're using a semi auto, you want ammo that reliably feeds through your gun. Paul Harrell does some ammo tests with meat targets and he's on you tube. Check out some of his video tests.

I wouldn't use ball ammo as it could over penetrate and hit someone else. There is hollow point ammo that works well. Lucky gunner labs tested the major calibers in ballistic gel and it's extensive. Paul Harrell has some interesting videos as well.

For me the main point is the weight of a gun I want to have for self defense, the amo has to follow this parameter.
My Bersa Thunder 380 weights 644 ounces with the 8 rounds holding clip inserted, and it is about 7" long and 5" high.

This thing is to big and heavy for me to carry around in my purse every day!  A gun with half that weight and several inches shorter would be ideal.  I the height is OK, because the grip is the right size for my hand.  If I can find a 380 or 9 mm with the dimensions I like, and for a reasonable price that would be great.  Once I found a gun that meets my needs and desires, I can find the amo for it that seems to do the best job.  380 would be great , because i could use the rounds in ether gun!

As I said, for me all the talk about the amo is purely academic, because my major point is finding gun that meets my requirements.   Once I found this, I can go out and scout for the best amo for the gun.
Once i am done with the unbelievable work to change my name and gender at all possible locations, I will visit a few gun stores and see what I can find that feels good.
I have the feeling I will end up with a revolver, because they seem to come in the smallest versions that can still be handled OK.
I never was really concerned about my personal safety when I was an almost 6'1" tall guy.  I traveled around in my motorhome and parked overnight on Walmart lots or truck stops without any fear.
But now being a trans woman, I am definitely way more concerned.  But I still want to travel around in my rig.  For most cases my first line of defense is still my 120 lbs big Rottweiler mix dog, but the pooch is not always with me, and a little gun might become handy.
But it is only good, if it is light weight enough so I carry it with me all the time.

I think it was a little late last night to do accurate measurement, the thing is 644 grams with clip inserted, and that would make it 22.7 ounces.

I hope you like this gun better than the canon I specified earlier!

Anyway, the pistol is to heavy and bulky for my taste to be carried around all the time in my purse!

If you go any smaller and lighter, they don't fit well in the hand and recoil is more. The LCP II probably is what you want. I might go for the 38 revolver for more punch. The Taurus is 6 shots and it weighs 15 oz.

I wouldn't carry a gun in a purse because if a thief walks by and takes the purse, the thief gets a gun. I always carry on body. I carry a Smith & Wesson M&P340PD. This  is a .357 magnum with a scandium frame and titanium cylinder. Even loaded the pistol weighs barely a pound and it's super easy to conceal. Plus it's a .357 which has a lot of stopping power. I'm actually going to a womens concealed carry fashion show this weekend because I am looking at moving to a 9mm instead of .357 and a 9mm has a lot more carry options. But my .357 isn't going anywhere. It's small enough to put in a pocket. It did take me about 5 months of dedicated range time to figure out how to effectively shoot a snub nosed revolver.

Back when I was going through my "snubbies are cool, I should get one" phase I tried some really hot defensive .38 loads through an airweight S&W.  I fired one cylinder worth and by that time my palm was tingling and the cylinder release button had peeled the skin off of my thumb knuckle.  I bought some standard pressure loads after that.

Full house .357 through the super lightweight version?  No thank you.

I would not even know how to conceal this under my female clothing!  I live in southern Florida, one tends to wear as little of the fabric things as possible!  I see my purse as the only means to have a gun along!

Beat me to it. I used to carry a Bersa Thunder .380 until I found the Ruger LC9, which is lighter, more compact, and is chambered for 9mm instead of .380 (and 9mm, despite being a more powerful round, is significantly less expensive than .380- it's win-win on everything besides size/weight).

The LCP is even smaller, but for me it was too small- I couldn't fit enough of my hand on it to really be comfortable shooting it. But, if compact size is your thing, it's a good way to go. You could also look into the Kel-Tec P3AT, or P32 if you want to get REALLY small (.32 ACP isn't a super exciting round, though).

And there are good and bad ways to do purse carry. I've got a CCW purse from a company called *cringe* Pistol Packin Mamas that is very well thought out- underneath the stylish leather shoulder strap is the real strap, a sturdy woven nylon, that isn't going to fall to a quick slice of a box cutter. Wear it cross-body, and it's not going to be an easy grab for anyone.

The LCP was too small for me as well.  It was a super convenient item to conceal though.

I have an LC9s and it's a surprisingly solid little gun.  Thanks to the locked breech the felt recoil is less than that of a Bersa Thunder .380 despite being chambered in 9mm.  The original LC9 had a godawful trigger, but the LC9s version has a super smooth striker action with a really great trigger.

I would not even know how to conceal this under my female clothing!  I live in southern Florida, one tends to wear as little of the fabric things as possible!  I see my purse as the only means to have a gun along!

There are a bunch of holsters that work with feminine attire as well.  I often purse carry, you just have to be mindful of things.

I have my wallet and everything in my purse, and I hang onto it like onto my dear life.  Forgetting it is not very likely.

I do not plan to go into a war zone or an inner city ghetto( I did not do this as a guy, and plan not to do this as woman).  I just want to have that little bit extra security against some thugs who feel they could do an older lady bad.   I very much believe that for most of those, just pulling the gun out of the purse is enough to send them running.

Yes, there are concealed carry holsters for females, but they don't work if one just wears a shirt and shorts or capries.  There is nothing available to hide one.

Oh you'd be surprised.  If you go up a size from your usual and get a low riding holster, you can hide more than you might imagine.

That said, purse carry is WAY easier at the expense of being a bit less secure.  My Kahr CM9 is in my purse unless I'm flying.

Ha!!! 🤗👍... A friend once let me shoot his Charter Arms snub nose .44... My hand felt like I  had just hit a brick wall as hard as you could with a baseball bat... I handed it back to him after two rounds and I think I took the second shot under protest!!!

I didn't think I could handle a snub nose either but I kept at it. Week after week I kept going to the range blowing through boxes of .38 special with an occasional box of .357 (.357 is about a dollar per trigger pull so its expensive stuff). It took me about 5 months but one day at the range I had a eureka moment when I realized I had figured out how to properly handle and shoot a snub nosed revolver. Now it's easy ;) but I know when I take a friend to the range and they want to try my carry gun they usually stop after a few rounds saying "I don't like this, it hurts too much". Been there done that is my usual reply.

A handful of pebbles and a double barrelled sling shot.  Not really,  2" .357 Mag with grip extender.  Almost a Dirty Harr(iette)

Hi Cassi,                            30 April 2019

Where have you been all this time? I'm going to guess at a shooting range.

I have a S & W Snubby I'd like to part with. Nice for concealed carry and when you have to pull it out, most baddies will poop themselves and run. If you have to pull the trigger, there'll be lots of DoDo to clean up.

I hope You have been doing well since your last post and update us on all the adventures in your life.

It's great to see you back.

Best Always, Love
Christine

Thanks Christine.  I've been doing okay.  As with anything, things could be a lot better but they're not all that bad.

Haven't been to a range for years, lol.  Though I'll be needing to for CCW recertification.  Darn, it's things like CCWs that make me want to move to a state that doesn't require and licensing :(

One of the reasons I took up reloading.  LOL  I found a box of .357 Speer Gold Dots buried in with some other ammo.  I don't know when I bought them but they were $7 for a box of 20 so a .35 cents a round.  Almost hate to shoot them.

Talking about concealed carry both on body and off body, I generally wear Riders by Lee stretch jeans and they have belt loops.  I use a Safariland belt with a Colt Mustang .380 in a Safariland holster with the thumb break strap that blocks the hammer for on body carry.  It's small enough that, with a slightly loose top it doesn't print.

If I have to carry off body, I use a Montana West concealed carry purse with a built in holster.  With the holster built into the back, it's almost as quick to deploy as on body carry.   The purse is adjusted to carry cross body so hard for someone to snatch and the strap is wide leather so it would be difficult to cut.  Also, since I keep the Colt cocked and locked, I don't keep it in the purse.  I carry a Glock 43 with the Pearce +1 floor plate so one extra 9mm.

Ladies, you are supposed to help me to select a nice little gun, and not make it more difficult!

Linde, if you want to stay with .380 have you looked at the Glock 42?  Normal capacity is 6 plus 1 but you can add the Pearce +1 floor plate which allows an extra round and gives a little longer grip on the pistol.  This is what my wife has.  Try to find one with night sights or, if not, have them added.  We have the night sights on all our Glocks.

I tink you misunderstood my need.  I don't need night sides, I don't need a capacity of 8 rounds, I just need max 3 rounds.  I do not want to participate in a new version of the OK Coral event, I just want to be able to scare the occasional thug away.  If that thug will not be stopped by 3 rounds, the person will not be stopped by 8 rounds either.
I tested several pistols, and to get them ready to shoot, i. e., pull the carrier back, I would have to ask any given thug, to please wait with the assault, because I am trying to pull that thing back!.  It seems that I lost a lot of upper body strength!
I settled for this little girl, I can caulk the hammer with my thumb while holding the revolver in my hand, and it is ready in no time.  It is small enough to fit into any of my purses, I don't need to buy a special purse for it, and the grip is nice and comfortable for my hand.  As I said, if I cannot stop the occasional thug with this one, any other will not do it either!

Never carry with an empty chamber with a semi auto. It's asking for trouble. With a double action revolver, you can just pull the trigger.

As a friend in the Liberal Gun Owners says, "Carrying a semi-auto with an empty chamber, you may spend the rest of your life chambering a round."

Well Devlyn, my shoulder hurts just watching that video. My brother had a shotgun 12ga. We fired some 3 inch magnum rounds and that was enough recoil for me. I shoot pellet guns and I am a decent shot. My pellet guns are for shooting aluminum cans not for protection.

All I carry is semi auto and I always carry condition 1.  Chambered, cocked with safety on.  Well, depending on 1911 style with thumb safety, or XP with grip safety.  Any more than that and you might as well not have it.  Okay, a slight exageration, but it isn't conforting knowing there is a forced delay in ability to respond to the threat.  Its never comfortable, just being paranoid.

The largest caliber I've sent downrange is .50, the famous M2 Browning "Ma Deuce" ....but that's not shoulder fired.

A friend of mine had a .444 Marlin, we split a box of twenty rounds and fired ten each. Lovely gun.

Hugs, Devlyn
