I just found out that my mom is taking me off of her insurance because she won't support my transition in any way. This means I will be paying out of pocket to see an endo from now on. Can anyone give me an estimated guess on how much it would be to see an endo without insurance? With insurance it would be $25.00 for me... so much for that.
when i got the bill from my endo is was around 550 but insurance covered it minus the copay

I haven't seen any bills from my endo, so I have no idea. However, just a plain boring exam visit to my MD with NO ISSUES was $250 for a family doctor. !!!

I've had insurance all my life so I had no idea that the bills were that high. God, I hope she sees the light and doesn't take me off of her insurance.

Medical bills are a ripoff... people don't know how much their healthcare really costs until they need something done without insurance...
If the parental units won't let you on their insurance perhaps Medicaid or a better job would help.

Yes, they're specialists--at least where I'm at they are. I need a referral to any specialist and I need a referral to see an endocrinologist.

My endo charged something like $281 for the initial visit. That included a brief exam, a consult, and my first shot of T. It did not include blood work. If it's not too late, you might want to see your GP before the insurance runs out, and get all your blood work done unless your endo visit is far in the future. Or find a clinic and get it done on the cheap...
good to know. I'm already on T. I've been on T for 4 months. I just need to switch to an endo in the city I live in now since I've moved so really all I need is the prescription... I forgot about the blood work so thanks for reminding me.

That truly sucks if your mother is actually doing this. What shes doing is flat out wrong. Maybe you need to find a meeting that specialized in this kind of situation... to help educate your mother with what is going on with you and how you're trying to change to the person that you're suppose to be. The girl that she knew never existed. It was all pretend.
I am on medicare and I see an endocrinologist but for a whole different reason :( What's good about medicare is that they assign you a login user name with password. you can sign in to see what you were billed with.

My mom has been seeing a psychiatrist but unfortunately... the psychiatrist doesn't take what I'm doing seriously. I went to one therapy session with both of them and I refuse to endure another one. If you've ever seen the movie Mommie Dearest that is my mom EXACTLY.... She's very vain and everything is my fault. Anything that could possible break her image brings her to irrational rage and then she takes it out on me. With that said, we are actually fine now. I'm worried she'll take me off eventually though....
it can only go one way or the other - she sees the light and decides to help her child along the road to happiness -OR- she completely loses herself to her vanity and cuts me off.

I spoke with the financial dept of my future endo's clinic not long ago and was told around $350. Not sure how accurate this is as the financial counselor barely knew anything about my case.
And people think trans folks are unbalanced. Sounds like your mother has a lot of issues.
If you're still insured, definitely get caught up on any medical issues while you still can. Line up the new endo, get a new prescription so you have backup, get full blood work if you need to.
Some cities do have informed consent clinics, and I understand that some GPs will work with you on HRT. Might be worth looking into.

I'll check to see if I can find someone who will do informed consent. I've been on testosterone for 4 months now so I'm wondering if the new endo I find will still need a therapy letter... unfortunately I don't have that. I DO have my prescription, though. I definitely cannot afford to see another therapist to get another letter.

Hmm. What did your old endo require? Can he or she refer you to another endo or something?

I went to the sidney borum jr health center in boston and next door they have a place where I went through therapy. The two places work together so it only took me 6 weeks to go through therapy and get prescribe T. I asked them to send me the letter and I'm hoping that an endo in Houston (where I am now) will accept that letter.
Sounds like a cool system. I hope the letter comes through.
