Are there any songs, or even just single lyrics that really stand out to you and reach you deep down inside?
One of my favorite quotes has always been from The Beauty of Grey by Live:
"This is not a black and white world, To be alive I say that the colours must swirl; And I believe that maybe today, We will all get to appreciate; The Beauty of Grey"
Lately however, the lyrics that reach me the deepest (for obvious reasons) is from Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen:
I check my look in the mirror, I want to change my clothes, my hair, my face."
"There She Goes" - the Las and Sixpence None the Richer - the whole song
"Secrets" - Mary Lambert - Almost the whole song.
Most of Against Me songs on Dysphoria Blues
"The Show" - Lenka the whole song
"Shiloh" - Neil Diamond - Whole song
I'll probably be back but have to run.
Warmly,
Joanna
Small add on... there is this indy music project that I follow called American Murder Song, its a collection of murder ballads set in the 1800s, very folk sounding, which isn't my typical genre, but I'm a huge fan of the musicians from other projects of theirs. Anyway, yesterday a new set of songs were released, one of the songs is called "Im Always Walking as Somebody Else," and while the song is about murder, that line stuck with me really strongly because in a way, the single lyric is very relatable. I'm always walking as somebody else, because although I am Crystal, I'm walking around day to day as Craig. Just some food for thought.
And fun to dance to.

I was listening to a later version of Stevie Nicks Rhiannon today and heard the line
"Once in a million years a lady like her rises"
I associated it with the sheer improbability and wonder of being able to actually transition. Something I used to never even dream would ever be possible in a million years. And yet here I am. Changing.
The Return to Innocence by Enigma. The entire song with all its words seem to describe the process I went through a while back in my mind to finally come to terms with it all.
Return to Innocence
Enigma
That's not the beginning of the end
That's the return to yourself
The return to innocence.

Don't be afraid to be weak
Don't be too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart my friend
That will be the return to yourself
The return to innocence.
If you want, then start to laugh
If you must, then start to cry
Be yourself don't hide
Just believe in destiny.
Don't care what people say
Just follow your own way
Don't give up and use the chance
To return to innocence.
That's not the beginning of the end
That's the return to yourself
The return to innocence.
Don't care what people say
Follow just your own way
Follow just your own way
Don't give up, don't give up
To return, to return to innocence.
If you want then laugh
If you must then cry
Be yourself don't hide
Just believe in destiny.
It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.
André Gide, Autumn Leaves
Pink....
I'm coming down, coming down, coming down
Spinning 'round, spinning 'round, spinning 'round
Looking for myself - SOBER [x2]
When it's good, then it's good, it's so good till it goes bad
Till you're trying to find the you that you once had
I have heard myself cry, never again
Broken down in agony just tryna find a friend
I was listening to a CD by Eileen McGann ("Turn it Around") while at my elecrolysis appointment the other day, and one lyric stuck with me. In fact, it has turned into an "ear worm" the last couple of days: "Casting off dull certainty". That's what my transition is about, I realized. I liked it so much, I put the full lyric in my signature.
I have a few:
Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel: "Hey, I said, you can keep my things they've come to take me home"
Alexandra Leaving by Leonard Cohen:
"As someone long prepared for the occasion
In full command of every plan you wrecked
Do not choose a coward's explanation
that hides behind the cause and the effect"
Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac:
"Time cast a spell on you...that you won't forget me...
I know I could've loved you, but you would not let me..
I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you..
You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you.."
Only song I can think of that really speaks to me lyrically at the moment is Present Tense by Pearl Jam. I'll just put the chorus in here:
You can spend your time alone
Redigesting past regrets, oh
Or you can come to terms and realise
You're the only one who can't forgive yourself, oh
Makes much more sense to live in the present tense
It makes sense, to me. Makes sense to live in the present tense. I don't want to remember all the crap that's gone on in my life- I just leave it behind and think about what's happening right now; what I want to do at this very moment. I don't look too much into the future either, if I do it's quite vague. I'm not one for planning.
Edit: Off He Goes, as well. Same band, same album...
I liked this one by Jennifer Michael Hecht:
One End of an Orange Cat.
Starts out:
.....Given the variables it's odd
that things narrow down one way
or another, but they do.
.........Reminds me of the man
who had to knock on a door and tell
a woman he'd just run over her cat.
....
Most of these will just be the whole song, but if I come across any particular lyrics that stand out I'll post them.

The song "Yoin" by the GazettE
It makes me cry sometimes:
余韻/Yoin translation
Lingering Memory
The end of dreams
Rotten,
Until not even a slight voice gets through
A scene where falsehood is unending
And even lingering memories blur
This scene
Where longing drew a circle of words linked
This scene
In days passing by
A waning prayer, for the sea...
Beautiful light, a slight ugliness
This rain which melts into my skin
Slowly
Gently, deeply, as if inquiring...
To the bottom of ideals
Yes, "Someday you'll transform into wind"
I should have known
Beautiful light, a slight ugliness
Necrosis of emotions hastening in bare tacitness
This rain which melts into my skin
Slowly
Gently, deeply; at the bottom of ideals,
A pierced reality,
And sea of forfeit
Comprehending powerlessness,
Mourned that day

Some of my favorite specific lines. some are angry and pretty dark. Sorry for that.

You should be living a different life

Standing naked in front of that hotel bathroom mirror,
In her dysphoria's reflection, she still saw her mother's son.
Delicate, Petite and Other Things That I'll Never Be - Against Me

There She Goes - The La's and Six Pence None the Richer
Quote
There she goes
There she goes again
Racing through my brain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains
There's about a billion lyrics I could post, honestly, but if I were to pick one part/song...
Don't Let It Break Your Heart by Coldplay, specifically this bit:
When you're tired of racing and you
Found you never left the start
Come on baby, don't let it break your heart
Saved my life. That's all I'll say.
