Title: Hiking
Post by: MeTony on March 10, 2019, 03:05:29 PM
Been hiking this weekend. I love it. Being in the woods. Close to nature and its elements.

I decded to buy myself a new backpack after this hike. My backpack is not as comfortable as I would like it to be. But it did not cost much. You get what you pay for.

Anyway. Hiking in the woods is a perfect exercise. I will def do this more often.

The hike was 15 km long. I lose calories fast as... Flash Gordon

The only downside is I can't hide my chest...but it will be gone soon anyway.

@MeTony
Dear Tony:
I am very happy to read your "Hiking" update.   Yes indeed, hiking in the woods is very pleasurable for sure... the smells, the scenery, etc... much better that being on an indoor treadmill.   I hate treadmills, even just walking at a brisk pace around town is much better than the treadmill scene.

In the wonderful photo that you attached, you look all bundled up exactly like I am dressed here lately and in the winter weather.   The Latitude where I live in central Alaska is "approximately" in the 60's deg Latitude.....   in Sweden where you live, are you inland or near the sea? ... and if you care to share it, what is your "approximate" Latitude there?   That would be a good general indicator of our possibly similar weather and climate especially in the winter months.
I don't see any snow on the ground in your photo....  here where I there is still several feet of snow and higher drifts especially in the woods up in the hills.

Again, thanks for sharing your posting and your picture.
Hugs,
Danielle

I used to do a lot of hiking.  One of my most memorable hikes was the Grand Canyon.  A couple miles down an extremely steep trail, seeing a thunderstorm in the distance, and grueling back up the trail to beat the weather.  Which I did.  Then I ate every bit of a large steak dinner the next day!  The hike also gave my shoes a very distinctive pink color.

Latitude 59. We had snow but it melted. It's about -5 to 5 degrees every day. Mixed temperatures.

It's a bit strange. We usually have much snow at this time. Now it is just sun, rain, ice. Not much snow at all.

I also like hiking. Usually I run slowly to the top of the nearby mountain, the highest in S. Korea, but have to walk when with my family or friends. Even in spring, there is some snow remaining in the top.

I've done the rim to river hike a few times on the Bright Angel trail, it's an amazing place to experience.  Camping down by the river is really peaceful.

As for treadmills, it's just a hamster wheel for humans.

Hiking is the #1 way for most folks to get out and exercise while living in a a walkable community is a huge benefit to overall public health and our quality of life.

I have been working with Trails and Hiking groups for decades and our trails may be the best legacy yet.

It just feels so good to Take a Hike!

Go Tony!

Now I may have gone and done something stupid. But stupid things are the ones you remember. Haha

I booked a room in a camp outside Kiruna. Waaaaay up north.

I also booked a guided hike to our largest mountain, Kebenekaise.

I invited my son. He said
"You say we will travel by train for 16 hours. Then we walk 15 km to see a mountain? Then we go home with the train...for 16 hours?"

Pause

"I'm on!"

Next summer we will do a real hike in the northern Sweden. Bringing tent and stuff with us. He wants to do a real hike without guide. With just a map and compass. Us and the nature. So that's what we will do.

Stupid things can lead to good things.

Tony

Here's a map. 900 km away is Kiruna.

I'm out hiking every week. I can't recommend it enough. I get really cranky if I don't go out into the hills. It doesn't stop the dysphoria but it puts everything else in my life into perspective and stops a lot of the other stresses and anxieties of life.

Hiking is such good medicine for the soul and body, and if I can't go out hiking in the mtns, I at least get 5 miles worth of brisk walking most days.

I live in a hiking preserve, effectively. The whole area just beyond the village is a "heritage coast". You can walk the entire coast of the county from the path nearby and the vast majority of it is protected from over-development by tourist traps. I'm less about hiking and more about diving these days. Almost nobody else dives in the area by our beach, few tourists have the stomach for diving in UK sea temperatures, even in summer - I have the entire area to myself. I know all the sea caves in the area that nobody can get to on foot... and what's in them.
Title: Re: Hiking
Post by: MeTony on March 23, 2019, 12:11:35 AM
@Kylo I'd also like to have the entire beach for myself. Haha.

It's pretty cold here in Sweden too. Atleast until july. In july the temperature will rise above 18 degrees.

I once jumped into a 6 degree lake with ice on it straight from the sauna. I thought I was going to die. Haha. But it quickly became comfortable in the water.

Diving is also good, but be careful if you are alone. Never good to swim or dive alone if something unexpected happens.

Im a keen diver as well Kylo. I bet the underwater life in your area is fascinating( and delicious).

When I dive I like to bring home seafood if I can as well.

This post might give me the kick up the bum I need to get the scuba gear ready for the season!

Here we also can hike in mountains and along the coast.

There are about 20 trekking courses along the coast, which is famous here in S. Korea: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeju_Olle_Trail

@MeTony

Very true, not a good idea to dive alone, especially for the inexperienced. I have to however. I know the area well and am experienced in freediving by now. But I appreciate every time I go out there are risks.

I'm sure the Swedish waters are very much colder than ours most of the time. Though I do remember my first big fish catch was when I spent 3 hours in 5 degree C water hunting them out in the nooks around the cliffs. That was a feat of endurance and concentration for me using only a regular wetsuit with no special insulation, since in order to hunt you need to move slowly. Not much chance to warm up if you want to catch wary fish.

@ Kirsten

Yes, I do the same, there are plenty of sea bass and wrasse in my area if you know it well. I only freedive though, I don't have a lot of experience with scuba, I'm sure it is amazing in Aus.

I bet you felt good after that dive especially with dinner in tow!

I did, it's a great feeling knowing that should you ever need it you can feed yourself from the sea. It's also very difficult to catch those big wrasse with a hand spear (not a speargun). The bigger the fish, the smarter it is, generally speaking. With a 6ft hand spear, you need to get within 7 or 8 feet of them while hiding or drifting so as not to look like a large deadly predator.

Hiked 30 km in 24 hours with a map and a compass through forest and up and down hills and mountains last weekend. Half the time in pitch dark with a lamp on our head. It's still dark in the evening. We had to do tricky tests to get a letter and then put the letters in the right order to get a word. They who manage to guess the right word first wins.

I though my feet would give up before we started but they did not. I love my hiking boots.

Me and 10 scouts were out and tried to win the competition. We didn't but we were close.

I did, my very first (big wrasse) got away though. Played dead for ages then wriggled away in a stray wave as I was holding it by the tail. Learned a few things since then, never underestimate the intelligence of a big fish. lol

Hi Tony,

I love the experience of hiking in Sweden you describe here. It seems despite being a first world country, Sweden has much to offer in natural environment and forest. Looks beautiful on your post. After speaking with Swedish travelers in Australia Sweden is high on my to do list. You have such a gorgeous country!

LOL my wife and I are driving there from Colorado Sunday! Although we'll only stay in the Ozarks for a couple of days. I just looked at some webcams and it looks like it's right on the cusp. Some trees will likely be leafing out, but it's early. Enjoy!

Oh yay! Such a beautiful area.  I have not been there in over 15 years.  The "mountains" are not as high as Colorado but the forests are so dence and much greener.  The views are still breathtaking!  Beauty is relative 🙂.

Yesterday I tried to climb a nearby peak (called Olum here), but I gave up after 2 trials. There was no road to the peak from my side. Too dense bushes. I was alone, and only abandoned wild dogs, pheasants and roe deer greeted me. 3 dogs chased me for a while, but eventually disappeared. I heard that those wild dogs sometimes attack and kill livestock.

It took about 4 hours for the about 18 km or 10 mile course.

My Sys blood pressure has dropped from 132 to 114 mmHg after the hiking. It is a good news!

MeTony!

Hiking is the way to go! Believe it or not but hiking (not even running) is a really great workout to get your heart rate up consistently, and not smash your joints to the doom.

I live close the smokey mountains Man! I love a good hike! There are actually some Trans specific Hiking groups in Knoxville TN if you are ever interested in good Smokey Mountain hikes.

Even after my military service, I never buy items brand new. People sell Rucksack and Eddie Bauer gear online at such a super low rate.
