Title: What comics are you currently reading?
Post by: LJP on December 25, 2013, 07:34:43 PM
Ooops I accidentally put this under fun and games instead of books. I didn't know if there were any comic fans out there. I love these what are your favorite/what are you currently threads. Introducing someone to something new or finding something new you enjoy is allways fun. Currently I'm following Rat queens and Saga. That's about it. I may start following batman when Snyder does something with harper row. Also I gave up on floppys. Usually I just wait for the trade. So what books are you reading?

I've been reading comic books for many years now. But I've been struggling with them for a while now - I was a big DC fan, they had a lot of female characters that I really enjoyed reading but they had to go and do that stupid new 52 stunt and a lot of those characters got wiped out of the current continuity or changed so much they might as well be new characters. I stuck it out, but... meh. The only book that really shone coming out of the reboot was Wonder Woman. I do love Fables though. The Angel & Faith series was good but finished now. I'm also really enjoying the FF book (not the main one, the one with the kids). I believe Saga is good but I've been having trouble getting it in trade.

I read comics when I was around 6 or 7 but the only one I remember was Transformers. I know there was a few more that I read but I can't recall them.

These days the only comic books I own are the Shut Up! Little Man!! comic book and a series of six comic books of The Get Along Gang that I didn't have when I was a kid since by the time it was on CBS as a Saturday morning series the ONLY thing you could find around here were the paperbacks like The Get Along Gang & The Crybaby, etc. But I purchased the complete six volume set of comics from a seller on Ebay a while back. The stories are good but some of the dialogue makes me roll my eyes. Like, when they shoehorn in the phrase "Let's get along, gang!". It's soooo frickin cheesy. They did the same thing in the Nickelodeon pilot. Thankfully, they didn't do this in the CBS series and I don't recall it being that way in the paperback books either.

Laura-I haven't read any transformers comics. That was after my time. I'm not familiar with the get along gang tho. Was it a cartoon?

Grace-I'm with you on that Grace. I think I grew out or burned out on comics. Luckily I found some I still enjoy. I'm with you on NU52. I'm not a fan. Oddly the NU52 batman by Scott Snyder was great. I say oddly because I am not a fan of batman. It's really good. I also agree with the wonder woman. I followed it til I stopped buying floppys. Have you read 100 bullets? It's written by the same person who wrote wonder woman(Azerello) and it's really good. Track down saga if you can it's awesome, especially if you like sci fi. I got mine on amazon.

Yeah, Snyder is a good writer. His stuff on Detective Comics before switching to Batman was also good. Azarello is also a good writer, I bought a lot of issues of 100 Bullets but at some point became disgusted by the violence and couldn't stomach it any more. A shame. I really liked the artist too, they make a good team (well, apart from the gore).

It was very violent I agree. Honestly some of the things lono did to women almost ran me off. I loved his wonder woman. I think I will track down some of those trades. I made it right up til the new gods appeared. Is it still running? I didn't read detective. The court of owls are what got my attention on batman.

Yes it was. Here is an episode that is still up on Youtube. This one revolves around my fave character on the show.

Hey Laura,
It looks kinda familiar. When did it run?

The pilot episode was shown on Nickelodeon in April of 1984. The CBS series (produced by DIC, instead of Nelvana, the company that produced the pilot.) It premiered on Saturday, September, 15th, 1984. It ran for one season and I remember it being re-ran until 1989 on CBS. Apparently, it was re-ran on some cable channels but those weren't carried by our cable company at the time. So, once it was no longer shown on CBS, that totally bummed me out.  :(

I am reading Harley's comic, but not wantingt o delve too much into the 52. Not a big fan and am still a bit uneasy about what they did with Harley, but i will see how it goes.

I used to read the Spiderman and Wolverine comics. West coast avengers were pretty good when it started, but was able to read the, due to ,y Uncle being a massive collector and he had them all.

Hi Chrissy, I read the old Harley comics. I haven't warmed to the NU52 Harley. Seems less whimsical serial killer and more homicidal cosplayer. I didn't like the new outfit either. After the redesigns in arkham and injustice, nu52 felt lazy.

She is definitley not the same and i think they have just effed her up a bit. I like the Arkham style and def feel the same. It feels like they just kinda forgot about her and just threw her together last minute. I thought it was interesting the different artist bit but its kinda lazy.

Last time Harley had her own series I bought every issue. This new series? Despite Amanda Conner's involvement (co-writing and covers) I can't be bothered. If Conner was drawing the whole thing I'd buy it just because I absolutely love her art but I'm not touching it just for the covers. The New 52 Harley... WTF?

Back when DC had their Villains' Month I ended up with a whole heap of comics I would never have bought, but because of my standing order I got them in the bag regardless. The fact DC cynically published multiple issues of certain titles through the month meant I got a good serving of tripe. Half of them I still haven't read, the thought of doing so is painful... some have been stand outs (Wonder Woman: First Born, springs to mind) but the majority was dross... pointless stories, dreadful reboots, etc... and the Harley Quinn issue attached to one of my Batman titles was one of the worst. The way she "acquired" her "costume" was laughably pathetic. DC's Villains' Month just about killed my enthusiasm for not just super hero comics but all comics. I dropped about half of my titles after that stunt.

I'm relived to hear others aren't happy with the new direction dc took. Everyone has been over the moon for it here. I thought it was me. I think I'm going to pick up the trade for the new ms/captain marvel run. Have any of you ladies read it? Also ms grace what was ww:first born? I haven't heard of that one. Sadly I'm out of the comic loop.

Wonder Woman: First Born was one of the two Villains' Month titles issued under Diana's comic. The First Born is the major new bad dude created (or recreated, I have no idea) by Azarello for the New 52 WW...  the issue might be collected into the WW TPBs, not sure.

I've always been a huge fan of Fables... if you want to see Once Upon A Time done right, Fables is the concept they ripped off. ;)

Holidays were pretty good thanks. Fairly quiet and stress free. I'm on vacation at the moment do that is helping me relax. I've been using the extra time to read through my comics backlog, stuff I couldn't bring myself to read before now (including a number of titles I've since dropped)

Hawkgirl is an interesting character, always overshadowed by her more aggressive partner though. She's currently she's starring in Earth 2 where he doesn't exist.

Good luck with your counsellor!

I'm a fan of both the hawks. Their backstory is a mess tho. I saw earth 2 it just didn't grab me tho. It's disappointing the big villain event wasn't good. I had high hopes for the csa. I've all ways enjoyed the alternate reality comic stuff. I've been re reading the authority lately.

Earth 2 has been fairly tedious, I must admit. I'm reading out of some vain hope it will gel at some point. But no. It's sad how, other than Superman or Batman, pretty much every character in DC has been retconned, sometimes into an utterly confusing mess. Wonder Woman has had her origin altered too, although I like this new take, makes her more interesting. Let me know what you think!

To be honest, I have avoided reading anything about 52. I can't stand the complete revamps of the unoverses that the comca keep doing. I am reading Harley's simply be ause of my decotion to her and how much I loved her, but I dunno if that will be enough if they keep doing so much.  Mght go back to reading a few different ones, but not sure which ones.

Fair enough! I never read the comic although I did see the show when it first aired all those years ago. But other than Blake I don't recall any of the other characters or their costumes. I presume Jenna is in the show, did her costume have a boob window too? :)

Yes, she was the blonde eye candy. From memory, she didn't ever wear a "boob window"; I imagine Marvel threw that in to spice things up a bit. It was a BBC production, after all.

I read a lot of comics. I go to SDCC every year since I was a teenager. I love it. I read about 10-15 titles a month. I don't have time for more. Right now some of my faves are:

East of West
Saga
Wonder Woman
the X-Men book that Terry Dodson is drawing
Almost everything by Mark Millar
Guardians of the Galaxy (And almost everything by Bendis)
Hawkeye <-I love this book

I finally quit Daredevil after like 8 years. I can't keep up with a lot of the avengers/X-books anymore. The DC stuff isn't that compelling although I'm plodding along with Justice League. Someone mentioned Amanda Conner, who I absolutely adore. I will have to post some of my sketches from her. I hope they do well with Harley. I loved the Power Girl run they had. So far, I also really like the new Black Widow book.

I think I have read Saga like a million times.  Brian K Vaughn is a genius!  I really really liked Y: The Last Man.

Oh and is anyone else absolutely nuts about Blankets by Craig Thompson?

And I can't forget The Adventures of Tin Tin by Herge.

I'm so utterly dubious of archery as a "super power" that it puts me off reading Green Arrow and Hawkeye - the Arrow TV show isn't too bad though and although the idea of someone fighting an alien invasion with a quiver seems dubious at best Hawkeye was pretty good in The Avengers. I might check out the Hawkeye trades because I have been reading good things about it.

I've been reading good things about Saga and I'm tempted but, although I collected the whole series of Y: the Last Man it really annoyed me a lot of the time, especially the conclusion. But I'm willing to give Saga a go... I tried finding a volume one trade at my local but there wasn't one... :/

Hawkeye isn't really a super hero book. It's more like, what kind of life does Clint have outside of the avengers and what kind of trouble does he get in. It's a fantastic book and bounces between him, his dog, some people who live in his apt building, some Russian mobsters and his sidekick/protege Kate Bishop who is really developing as a character. I guess she's not really a sidekick, she was hawkeye in young avengers years ago.

I can see why it could be a pain in the butt.  Thinking back, the ending was a little wonky.  I wonder if Saga's ending will be the same.....

Seems like that happens a lot. It's almost like writers aren't as good as crafting an ending. I guess it's fair to point out they work in a medium that usually is ongoing. Maybe they like to leave them open so they can come back to them. Pride is really good. I'm halfway thru the 100 bullets run. God I wish they would make a good show out of that series.

It's a very male dominated industry, both in terms of creators and readership. And there's one thing most guys like... and "the bigger the better"... ;)

I used to fanatically read the Uncanny X-Men waaaay back in the 1980s. In those days there was only one title (shocking, I know). Then came the New Mutants, then X-Factor (along with the first resurrection of Jean Grey) and then things got way too complicated and Marvel went a bit nuts and unstable and I stopped reading anything Marvel through the 1990s and a lot of the 2000s. Every time I tried dipping back in to the X universe it was too large and complicated and always doing mass crossovers and mega events. I did read Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men and am reading the new all women X-Men title but there's a lot of characters I have little idea about.

I'm with you on the crossovers. Imo they restrict they writers to stay within a larger story. That keeps them from crafting their own stories. They take a back seat to whatever the crossover is about. The days of Claremont crafting a story over years is long gone.

There's definitely too much editorial interference these days, at both DC and Marvel. I know they need to sell books to stay afloat but they seem to be shooting for lower and lower common denominators and these stupid mega crossovers are the worst example of that. At the moment DC has this Forever Evil thing going on, one of the titles I read has become enmeshed in a massive crossover over five months with four or five other crappy titles that I don't read and won't read on principle. Seriously considering dropping the title I am reading because what's the point in getting only one fifth of the story? :-\

Ok, I promised to post my Amanda Conner sketches and here they finally are. These are not proper scans of the artwork, so there is perspective distortion and stuff, but I haven't had a chance to scan them at work and one is on the wall anyway. It took me years to get these. I have a quirky head sketch in my book. A Shehulk piece in my book that I was lucky enough to get at SDCC '11. A large Catwoman that is pretty much my holy grail. I got to meet her and Jimmy for a while when I picked out that piece. She had brought a couple of large pieces to SDCC and I got there early enough to get one of them. It was just black and white ink when I picked it out and she was coloring them at night. I love that Catwoman piece. It's from SDCC 2010. In 2012 she did no sketches at all as it was right in the middle of her Silk Specter book. Then at last years I got to hang out with her and Jimmy for a while at an off-site location which was so freaking cool. I had been pestering Jimmy on Twitter and finally tracked them down at a bar that was hosting Trixster that year. When I found them, there was nobody else around. So he was doing an interview for a while and I got to talk to Amanda and then she did the Black Widow piece. It takes about an hour for her to do one and I just can't believe we were just hanging out at a table talking about stuff while she drew it. Totally epic and once in a life time opportunity.

Yeah she is endowed. That's ramos tho, kinda anime exaggerated style. A person I know got this sketch. He asked for non superhero. Ramos' English is not great. He came back and it was wonder woman. He kept complaining on way home. I said I would love to have it. I will pay you what you paid him. He jumped at the offer. Then came back later and wanted it to sell on ebay.

Lara,

I've just been every fortunate to fall into friendships with people in the industry, so I have collected some pretty cool things, but nothing is better than the experiences.

I think you are doing just fine with your art, you're far more capable than me.  I have no artistic talents.  I probably repeating what you've already heard, but if you want to be an artist, then you need to draw or do whatever media you want, all the time.  You can only get better at it.  Find your style, make it yours and excel at it. And draw lots of real life, it makes you better at everything.  I'm just repeating what friends tell my daughter that wants to be an artist.

From what I have heard about being an industry artist, it's not about being a great artist.  It's about being a good enough artist that is consistent and fast.  Those people are considered gold.

Other than that, do what you want, it's about you anyway  :D

Let's see I collected Doctor Who The Prisoners Of Time and completed reading it a few weeks ago. I have the first 8 issues of Smallville season 11(second four combined into a collection volume) and have read the first four and a few pages of issue 5. I have Deadpool Pulp issue I think 2 and 4(can't find 1 and 3), Spider-Man Noir issue 1(Can't find the rest). Also I have a few comics left over from when I got them with some figures(like a transformers one) and showbags from our royal show. Also my brother one a raffle at a wrestling show a few months back and basically I bought it off of him and it included like twelve comics one of which was a Hulk one that collects a bunch of issues and is thick.

So not very detailed sorry but that is the gist of it.

The Power Girl trade collecting Amanda and Jimmy's run from 1-12 was just released. It also has JSA Classified 1-4, but that's not really important anymore. This is must read material and some of the best, funnest stories I've read in the last decade. If you have not read them, go buy now and enjoy.

THREAD REVIVAL!

Lately I've been reading:

Secret Avengers - This series is goofy and fun with lots of Spider Woman.

Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel - obviously

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind - A six issue story that takes place after the movie.  I really liked it.

Miles Morales/All-New Ultimates - It's picking up steam and I really like some of the young characters.

Satellite Sam - Originally I thought this title was just going to be an excuse to make some vintage pin up style art, but it is a surprisngly good read.

Harely Quinn - I'm not a big fan of DC, but this title is always good for laughs.

Amazing Spider-Man - The title just relaunched.  It's only 3 issues in so now is a great time to jump on the spidey bandwagon!

Gotham Academy looks promising even if it is just a blatant attempt to milk more from the Bat franchise. The new team on Batgirl looks like the comic will be a lot more fun. I'm sure Gail Simone was writing to an editorial directive to make Babs all grim and gritty but most of her stories were not all that enjoyable for it.

I teach high school literature and would love to use Gaiman's work in the classroom.  I'm guessing this was an advanced class?

I splurged on the leather-bound Absolute Editions of The Sandman (4 giant volumes, plus a 5th book of supplementals, and a 6th volume that collected all of Death's stuff) as they came out, and lugged them to numerous signings and conventions over the last few years.  Now they're each signed by Neil Gaiman and sketched in by Dave McKean.  :-)

Currently I'm reading the TPB of Joker: Death of the Family.  I also want to get into Harley's title as well as Suicide Squad.  Really can't get enough of Batman without Batman; for instance, Arkham Asylum: Hell on Earth was a fun departure within the bat-verse.

Cheers,
Tegs

I love Amanda Conner's art work, I heard she was only doing the covers and contributing to the writing though. If you tell me she is doing the inside art I will pick up the trades in a flash. That's how fickle I am.

Amanda is doing the covers, I believe Amanda is working with the artists doing the interiors.

It's not much of a surprise that she would be working with Jimmy on the story.  They are so close that many of us didn't realize they weren't married until they actually did finally tie the knot.

Gotham Academy was really good. It's hard to describe. I get a strong Harry Potter/Mystery vibe out of it. Batgirl has been really fun. Both books very character driven, spotlight and supporting characters feel three dimensional. Gotham by midnight is really good. They don't feel like cash grabs yet. Both are just starting. Wait for the trades , by then you will have a good idea if they are worth your time.

Are we counting webcomics as "comics", or strictly dealing with print material?
I think I am cursed when it comes to comics, while I didn't read much in the mainstream, every little oddball comic I thought was interesting, stopped being published a few issues after I started reading it...
And it's running that way with webcomics as well (Alien love Predator, which I admit must be difficult to do, as it's action figures, photography and lots of photoshop)  but the one print comic that seems to still be around is "The Sixth Gun", a sort of Weird West style that's been very good.

I used to play role-playing games where we were the superheros, and the plots always seemed better than the mainstream comic ones. What I'd like to find is a superhero comic where the main characters (or even the bad guys) are 100% believable, where they made mistakes, learn, grow, react, feel pain and sadness, grief, etc. The show Arrow is amazing in this regards, the main character is fully flesh and blood and makes bad choices, and has to live with the consequences. Not seen that in mainstream comics (but then again, I don't read many so I could have easily missed them)
The Sixth Gun is worth tracking down, I enjoy it immensely. Also ones like Hellblazer, the main character really is a screwup, and the issues tie into one another, so there is a real sense of history about John Constantine.

The Hellblazer cover of Constantine with a birthday cake with cigarettes instead of candles is my favorite.  The artist used his brother-in-law as a model for Hellblazer covers.  Unfortunately his brother-in-law passed away a few years ago after struggling with life, drugs, and alcohol.

Marvel fan(mostly) here. Reading: Secret Avengers, All New Hawkeye, sadly awaiting the last issue of Fraction's Hawkeye, and trying to get up the nerve to read the Losers. Thinking about buying The Sandman comics (looking for feedback on that one). Loved the Hawkeye vs Deadpool series. Avoiding everything to do with Cap and Iron Man. And trying to keep from freaking about Secret Wars.

Um hi there! (waves)

So I'm going to try to break down my pull list for you. Based by comic company and title.

DC Comics

Batgirl (I started with the New 52 stuff. Couldn't get into it when Gail Simone was writing. The tone was way too dark. Love the new writing & art team on it. LOVE how LGBT friendly it is.)

Gotham Academy (Saw this above when browsing through the thread. It is good for me so far. Feels very much like a mix between Scooby Doo and Harry Potter. A lot of fun.)

Wonder Woman (Not sure how to feel about the new creative team yet.)

Marvel

Thor (This is the new Thor. Who is a woman. And she is AWESOME!!!)

Image

Saga (So good!)

The Wicked And The Divine (Really good as well. A little confusing since my Gods and Goddesses knowledge is a little rusty.)

That is it. Anyone else reading these books?

Ok quick update I read a lot of comics so lets see

Thor yes go new thor

Ms Marvel its like spiderman for a new generation a teen dealing with life and super heroing.

Saga just ya its saga so well writen.

Angela: in summary "a norse goddess raised by mercenary angels who will soon embark on a quest to Hel itself to rescue the soul of the transgender woman she loves from the eternal damnation she condemned her to" "ok that plot is actually coming soon but still"

Constantine/Hellblazer he is suck a jerk that is fantastic

a few x-men and avengers titles nothing special except all new all gay ice man.

and my current favorite that I am so sad has finished its run.
Loki: agent of Asgard, fantastic all through its 17 issues a story of a villian trying to break the chains of fate, to change who they where and who they will become with the final story arc dedicated to starting a new life, holding on to what you love about yourself and writing a new story for your life, fighting the gravity of your past that threatens to drag you back into the role you are trying to leave behind and setting aside your fears, your doubts and your depression to become a better you. All this told from the point of view of a pansexual gender fluid god.

What is a Lie when it's at home? Anyone?
Is it the depressed little voice inside? Whispering in my ear? Telling me to give up?
Well I'm not giving up. Not for that part of me that hates myself. That part wants me to wither and die. not for you. Never for you.  --Loki: Agent of Asgard

just finished a bunch of tpbs from anazon. gotham academy 1, black science 3, and saga 5. all were great.

gotham academy-loved it ,one of my fav books out right now. ending has me super excited for next story arc.
black science-even tho i liked 1&2 more 3 was solid. it is allways interesting to see what the next reality adds to story.
saga-great, would be fav if not for gotham academy. someone from hbo plz make a saga show.

looking forward to new sex criminals tpb. anyone have any cool books everyone should be reading?

Gotham Academy is wonderful! I love how it is structured. And I think you mentioned it up in the thread that there is a like a Harry Potter/ Scooby Doo vibe to the book? It is such a fun and interesting book!

And a thousand times yes to Saga! Love that book! :-)

i was bored so stopped in lcbs n picked up some books on a whim.

plutonna#2- jeff lemire, sorta stand by me with superheroes thrown in. i'm reserving judgement til i read trade, still looks promising.

paybacks#1-superhero repo parody, i really enjoyed it. quirky humor with cartoony violence.

spidergwen#1-really like character. feels like it's own thing when it could have easliy been a cheesy what if. marvel has been doing some cool stuff with there female characters, hope they keep it up.

karnak#1-warren ellis is one of my fav writers. i picked this up because of him and i really enjoyed it. not familiar with karnak or inhumans, having said that i'm glad i picked it up.

so has anyone read anything cool lately?

Viz, not quite as funny as it used to be. If easily offended best not read it.
The Unforgiving, I heard Within Temptation's CD based on the comic long before reading it. Very dark but I like it and the even darker video introductions

Recently I've been reading Ms. Marvel (my first marvel comic in a long time), also just finished Rat Queens cause I heard  a TV show based on it, was being made. Figured I should go full hipster and read it before then.

Right now almost all the comics I am reading, save for Archie, are fronted by or have strong woman characters in them.

So like Batgirl, Wonder Woman, Saga, and Black Magick to name a few.

Just finished first story arc of papergirls. Loved it, has a ensemble sci-fi 80s coming of age movie vibe. Image comes thru again.

Just got amazon shipment. Got giant days, lumberjanes,Jupiter's legacy, rat queens vol. 3,Gotham academy vol.2.
They were all good, but lumberjanes and Gotham academy were great. Hoping Gotham academy survives dc reboot.

Gotham Academy is going to come back, but it won't be for a while. I think there is annual one coming out in August (?)

And LumberJanes and Gotham Academy are going to have a crossover mini series pretty soon.

I'm reading Jason Aaron's Thor trade(hardback because they feel way better) collecting Thor (2014) #1-8 and Annual #1. This is the arc that introduces the female Thor after the original drops the hammer. I really like it. It's a fun, easy read with fantastic art.

I'm also reading Wonder Woman Rebirth Deluxe Edition Book 1 by Greg Rucka collecting Wonder Woman #1-14 and Wonder Woman Rebirth #1. I really wanted to get into this but it's just not doing it for me. I know a lot of people love it and I don't wanna discourage anyone from checking it out so I'll leave it at that.

Need to read Watchmen again. That has to be my fave comic. It's heavy stuff though, have to be in the right mood.
