Title: Anyone else interested in steam trains?
Post by: Lisa89125 on November 03, 2018, 05:52:58 PM
My hobby is anything related to steam engines. I just love the antique coal burning behemoth's from yesteryear. Steam engines are magical time machines. My preference is for British steam as I feel a deep connection to my English roots. My ancestry is mostly British so that would help to explain it I guess.

Makes me really proud to see female drivers on the footplate of these antique machines. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiRtdo1rnU4 (ftp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiRtdo1rnU4)

I have a book by Don Bell, a pictorial of American steam. I love it. It's a shame they went away, but they are expensive to maintain and run.

So true. Nothing will ever compare in terms of majesty though.

I was into steam in a big way when I was really young and even talked my Father into taking me to a transport museum, where we viewed a full scale replica of 'Stevenson's Rocket' - the first accepted design of a working model engine, though there were a few prototypes before it.

I still have an affection for the age of steam, and as I have a log burner which also takes coal, it looks and reminds me of the firebox on a steam engine, especially with the wide chimney pipe protruding upwards. I always have a stupid grin on my face when loading it up with coal. lol Nowadays the kids only have 'steam punk' - but it sure is an extremely cool fashion statement.

I became addicted to steam in England in the 70s when I was a child. Dad & Mum took us to steam fairs where we could see traction engine racing & steam lorries amongst other things. I often play with my young sons with our Mamod traction engine.
I also have taken my sons for a ride on the minature steam railway in Perth Australia.- Little did they know I was having more fun than them !

Steam rules!

Megan and I rode the North Norfolk Railway from Holt to Sheringham and back. The tickets are printed on
old-timey thick cardstock. The train runs past a windmill and a golf course. Everyone stops golfing to wave at the train.  :)

All of the timetables, rolling stock (steam, diesel, and the vintage coaches) are shown on their site: http://www.nnrailway.co.uk/

When I was a kid and lived in Scotland, I remember taking the train from Glasgow to Aberdeen or Inverness to visit my gramdmother.  It was the early 1960s, and steam was still in use on that line.  I still remember the smell of the smoke and steam as the train went through tunnels.

I have always enjoyed the magic of the steam era and the draw of the massive behemoths. I also love the old time beauty of the coach work and of course the image of Phoebe Snow created by the Lackawanna Railroad. My wife and I had a chance to tour the Steam Town National Historic site in Scranton PA a couple of months ago, it was a very enjoyable experience.

I am absolutely fascinated by those beasts and have been known to stop at parks where one is on display just to take a look when traveling for work.

Wow, So many of us gals are into steam. I would have never imagined there would be so many of us interested in the age of steam. Yay! I was afraid I would have to give up my old interest to become my true self.

I've been to Steam Town twice when I was a kid. We went around the time they opened at the current location as they moved from Bellows Falls VT. Rode on CNR 3254. I will admit UPRR 4012 the Bigboy is my favorite engine at the park. Waiting somewhat impatiently to see restored UP 4014 next year. Well, Even if it's only on You tube. Second to 4014 would be C&O 1309 on the Western Maryland Scenic RR. They have had no end of troubles though getting that loco restored.

British steam is my favorite and I have always wanted to get to the UK to ride on some of the many steam and vintage diesel trains. The class 37 diesel is my favorite UK diesel. Old English Electric locomotives have such a neat sound.

The UK railways did not get rid of steam till 1967 I believe. Most US railroads had been done with steam since the 1950's. One interesting experimental locomotive of British fame that sadly did not survive because of it being only a prototype was Gas Turbine #3 known as GT3. Many a times I wished I could move to Britain only to start a new build project to bring back GT3.
