Tragically true.

^This^ strikes me as true and I wonder if it is. I wonder how many activists were yanked by circumstances into activism.

For the most part, I live a quiet life and don't stand out. My life is fairly boring. But due to the bigotry in the athletic world, I found myself embroiled in a controversy with a sports governing body and the subject of minor publicity. Most of us who become activists didn't set out wanting to be one. You encounter something unjust and decide to fight for change, and that puts you into the activist box.

Legal Matters / Re: Who can and can't see my d...

Hello Jack!

Welcome to Susan's Place.

I had similar concerns as you. When I changed my legal name, I sent certified copies of the court order to everyone I have business with. For income, that is Social Security, Veterans Administration, and a disability pension fund. I also sent copies to the three credit bureaus TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. Then I did the same to all my creditors: Credit Union (car loan), credit card company, and bank. Then it was driver's license, vehicle registration, and insurance company.

It sounds like you took care of most, if not all of these too. It takes time, but as systems update and cross-check information, eventually your dead name will be buried deep in the past. It is accessible through court records because that is public information. But who is going to bother, except maybe law enforcement? But what would be the point? That is not who you are NOW and that is what they want to know.

I had a background check done last August to move into my new apartment. At that time, my name change was less than a year old, so I gave the manager a copy of the court order. That was just in case some system that I missed had not been updated yet. Now, I am coming up on two years since my name change and I refuse to acknowledge my dead name. I get telemarketers calling and I just say no one here by that name and hang up.

Things may be different in Michigan, but most states operate the same way. I would say to not worry too much about it. If it comes up, just correct the record if necessary. If it isn't important (like a telemarketer for the police charity), just tell them that isn't you, or that person doesn't live there anymore.

That is my experience and I hope something in here is useful information for you. If you have more questions, feel free to ask. I will help in any way I can.

Again, welcome to Susan's!

I am with you there, O&C.

The problem is that it is not an either/or situation. Just because they attack you doesn't mean they will leave that teenager alone. If that were true, I would gladly step into the fray. I'm at a point in my life where I am tired of being the punching bag.

Monday and Tuesday at my office I am now mostly done with tax work but now I have
been tidying up the paperwork disarray with the help of one of my part time gals.

Starting this morning I am taking entire week and week end off to enjoy some free
time and going on a road trip toward Fairbanks and then the northwestern coast
of Alaska all the way "toward" Nome.  NOTE: Nome is not connected by roads and the
only way there is by Air or by Sea....  so we are not actually going to get there but
we will enjoy the scenery out that way.

My tooth fairy and I will also get some serious shopping done in in the bigger city
of Fairbanks.

It has finally been warming up substantially the last couple weeks.  Late nights
and early mornings are still below freezing temperatures...this morning 23 deg (f)
but around noon and in the afternoons the temperatures are around 50 deg (f)

QuoteI prefer to get militant and political so young people don't have to. I'd rather have someone bring their issues up with me than have them bully a teenager.

I understand ^this," Devlyn, and am grateful. I had a modicum of fame and infamy and thus conducted a lot of current for decades. Think of me as a wire that's both melted and crisped and now simply wanting to plunge my hands into my garden soil rather than politics.
