Title: Questions
Post by: Madeline on July 08, 2018, 05:07:41 PM
Hi, I was wondering what kind of things to expect should I transition. A slight problem is that I go to a boy's school. I'm 90% certain that uk laws mean I can stay in the snow. If you've been in a similar situation please can I have some advice and warnings?

Btw should worst come to worst there are other schools nearby, even a girls school so if bullying got unbearable that could be a worst case scenario option since all my close friends are all from out of school or both. (obviously of rather not do this though. Is it a bad idea?)

Kids can be mean.  Even with protective laws in place, bullying could happen.  I would think it is more likely in a single-gender school, whether it is a boys' school or a girls' school.  If you need to change schools, a mixed-gender school where the administration supports trans kids and enforces anti-bullying policies would probably be your best bet.

as much as this is probably not a good idea, make sure that you have friends at the school that will back you no matter what, because all schools will have the bullying happen, it is worse in singe gender schools, and the administration should be supportive for the least amount of bullying to happen. sadly, it will happen no matter what, and how you react to it will cause more or less. avoid physical fighting if you can, because it isn't fun when the bullying doesn't happen out of fear(I fought and won after being jumped at my school, and now all the people my age in my town are to afraid to speak around me, especially if they are talking about anything dealing with lgbtq+ activism and support groups, and it sucks)

Maria,

Kids can be mean. I am an adult and I work in the arts. I just came out full time this year. I have had no problems but am in the most accepting group I know. High school kids are becoming more accepting. That is not a rule though. Likewise, many of the problems kids have before college, come from other kids parents. Worried about having a "boy in the girl's bathroom or locker room". These are some issues you may have to contend with. However, you might not too.

Do you have a GSA or something like that at your school? I have teen kids and they have found it really supportive and useful.

Good luck. Stay safe and keep asking questions if you need to. Stay true to yourself.

Warmly,

Jacqui
