Title: Songs that (probably) aren't about GD/trans, but sound like they could be.
Post by: Daisy Jane on July 15, 2016, 07:48:34 AM
I was looking through another thread on songs about GD and it got me thinking. A lot of songs are written in a way that leave the lyrics open to interpretation. Have you ever listened to a song that probably wasn't about transitioning or GD, but sounded like it could be?

After recognizing my own desire to transition, I started hearing the song Mirror Error by The Faint in a totally different way. It totally sounds like he's singing about GD to me.

Mirror Error lyrics

Baby thinks he looks just like the face he makes in mirrors
Only once or twice a month
Does the mirror do him justice
Every other time he looks a mess
He expects a lot from it
But then barely notices

Baby knows we all create the world from in our skulls
Everything you think of is just as real as you make it
Now he only focuses on dreams
Can you make a thing exist just by focusing on it?
Yeah?

I been around a mirror enough to know it's hard to change
We're like magicians when we dream
But we wake up and nothing's different
Cover up with jewelery or pierce all the parts you've got
If the packaging design can fix the contents

I might distort myself a bit
I doubt that I'm the only one
To hope their features smear
Warp the face that's stuck to my skull
It's just a mask
Peel the skin away and we'll trade
I'm not so attached to this face

"In the Water" by Anadel has been my general dysphoria song for a while despite almost certainly not being about it.

You hold your every breath
But life is for the living, in the water
You feel that you should run, but where are you to hide
In the water

Against the tide we struggle
With the skin we're in, the skin we're in
Against the tide we struggle
To keep our heads above the deep
And our hearts above the lie

And so on, but that's the bit that strikes me.

While recording it I realized it could relate to all those who end up on the street to be able to live their lives as themselves, and it saddened me very much. Rose.

Phil Collins - Another Day in Paradise
Album: ...But Seriously (1989)

She calls out to the man on the street
Sir, can you help me
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep
Is there somewhere you can tell me

He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there

Oh, think twice, cause it's another day
For you and me in paradise
Oh, think twice, cause it's another day
For you, you and me in paradise
Think about it

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been cryin'
She's got blisters on the soles of her feet
She can't walk but she's tryin'

Oh, think twice, cause it's another day
For you and me in paradise
Oh, think twice, it's just another day
For you, you and me in paradise
Just think about it, just think about it

Oh Lord, is there nothing more anybody can do
Oh Lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she's been there
Probably been moved on from every place
'Cause she didn't fit in there

Oh, think twice, cause it's another day
For you and me in paradise
Oh, think twice, it's just another day
For you, you and me in paradise
Just think about it, think about it

It's just another day
For you and me in paradise
It's just another day
For you and me in paradise...

I always felt like Billy Joel's "Code of Silence" spoke to me about keeping being trans a secret.

Everybody wants to hear the secrets
That you never told a soul before
And it's not that strange
Because it wouldn't change
what happened anyhow

But you swore to yourself a long time ago
There were some things that people never needed to know
Guess there's one that you keep
That you bury so deep
No one can tear it out

And you can't talk about it
Because you're following a code of silence
You're never gonna to lose the anger
You just deal with it a different way

And you can't talk about it
And isn't that a kind of madness
To be living by a code of silence
When you've really got a lot to say

"So Far Away" by Staind sounds like it's about someone who has gone through transition and is finally happy.

this is my life
its not what it was before
all these feelings i've shared
and these are my dreams
that i'd never lived before
somebody shake me
'cause i
i must be sleeping

[chorus]
now that we're here,
it's so far away
all the struggle we thought was in vain
all the mistakes,
one life contained
they all finally start to go away
now that we're here its so far away
and i feel like i can face the day
i can forgive and i'm not ashamed
to be the person that i am today.

these are my words
that i've never said before
i think i'm doing okay
and this is the smile
that i've never shown before

somebody shake me 'cause i
i must be sleeping

[chorus]

i'm so afraid of waking
please don't shake me
afraid of waking
please don't shake me

[chorus]

I think the Caterpillar and the Barbed Wire by Riverside could be about someone's transition, especially the second verse. Don't think it ends too well, but it's a beautiful song all the same.

Lyrics:

I want to fly
I want to feel my life
Still belongs to me
No matter what
I want to fly
I want to flap my wings
And cause a hurricane in your heart

Butterflies
Better lies than hate
But I can't pretend anymore
I'm tired of suppressing all of my needs
I want to belong to the cloudless sky
Not to the shaded ground

But it's so hard to admit
That I lived without your light
Trying not to believe that I need it more
Now the bleeding won't stop
For I struggled through the barbed wire
Trying not to believe that I need your love
Trying not to believe in love

I wanted to turn into a butterfly
But I couldn't trust you enough

I was tired of suppressing all of my needs I wanted to belong to the cloudless sky
Not to the shaded ground

But it's so hard to admit
That I lived without your light
Trying not to believe that I need it more
Now the bleeding won't stop
For I struggled through the barbed wire
Trying not to believe that I need your love
Trying not to believe in love

But it got me now

The way I think I can bend a lot of song lyrics to apply to my situation even if that's not what it's about.
