Title: Completely excited about my new project...

This is "Irish Moss" from Alice Starmore's Aran Knitting (the original edition).

I am making mine in white wool, and yay for binding! Maybe I can actually make a sweater for myself that fits for once! (pre-binding, my chest would always make the rest of the sweater stick out near my stomach like I was pregnant).

My goal is to finish this during my school vacation. I think it'll be possible, I once did an entire lace shawl on size 00 needles in a little less than a month.

You and Rosie Grier.  Who says real men don't knit.  Looks awesome.  I can't wait to see the finished product.

Ah, this project is great but exhausting, it takes so long to do one row. It looks great, and I think it's one of the best things I've knit so far. Just need a little more before I can separate the front and back to make the arm holes.

That is amazing. It looks really complex... and then I was chuckling because I was thinking what if people just wore knit tube-tops like that.

I WISH I could knit. My mom tried to teach me to crochet when I was little but I couldn't get the hang of it. I figured if I can't do that then knitting's probably out of the question.

Ford, knitting isn't too hard once you get a hang of it, but no two people will ever teach you a like. there's surprisingly, many ways to do it. I like the Portuguese method, it's easier on the hands. Knitting is easier for some to learn, because it's really straightforward, while crocheting has the single, double, treble, double treble crochet etc. I crochet too, but I mainly knit.

Liam, I love this book. I've been pouring over it for years, and have only really used it to take the cable patterns out of for other projects and to look at all the nice pictures. I love all the Starmore books I've seen. I've made the Ruska sweater from Scandanavian Knitting (which I think it a really underrated book of hers) and I am dying to make the Trondelag cardigan from it as well. I want to make something out of her Celtic Knitting or Fair Isle books, but not sure what. Though, I think Trondelag is going to be my next project.

Have you started anything from Aran Knitting (or thinking about one)?

Wow that is gorgeous work!  :o  You can just make a sweater for yourself like that? How long have you been doing that? (I'm a bit intimidated by sewing. I'm going to soon have to learn how for fashion class)

Yeah, I've made sweaters and vests before, but I tend to never be able to make anything the correct size. My gague is usually spot on when I start, then magically it ends up being too big when I finish.

I've been working the basics into small projects to get a handle on it so I can do a sweater and get it right.  I spin my own yarn, so there's a good while left to cogitate on designs and so forth before I can start anyway.  One of the coolest things in the book, in my opinion, is the orange shawl blanket thingy with all the knotwork.

The Maindenhair shawl? I did the main cable in that in a scarf, I love that cable. If my mother-in-law didn't hate everyone, I was going to make the St. Brigid sweater for her.

I spin too, but I haven't had time lately (or roving). You have your own sheep right? I bought some from a lady who has a bunch of Shetland sheep (they're so cute) and made some hats and a purse (which I am still working on.... like 3 years later, all I need to do is put in the lining and the handles). I have some neighbors with llamas and they sell the llama wool, so maybe I'll try picking it up again this summer. I also love sweetgeorgia's rovings (though I've never bought any). I am not that great at spinning yet, my yarns end up thick and not very smooth, but they make nice hats.

Edit to add: Admin, if you need to learn to sew, I highly recommend "The Sewing Book" by Alison Smith. You can get it at Barnes n Nobel for $40. It's HUGE  and basically will tell you everything you could possibly ever need to know about sewing.

What kind of spinning wheel do you have? I used to have a Schacht (the Matchless kind) which I liked, you could change it to be either flyer or bobbin driven or put it in double drive, but my husband was convinced it was broken (even though I said, it's not broken I just don't know how to spin), so he then bought me an Ashford which I am not as fond of, since it can only be flyer driven and it takes up more space.

We had some pet sheep for a few years that my mom bought on a whim once, but she didn't know how to shear them so some guy would shear them and take the wool. How long have you been raising sheep? Doing some farm stuff sounds like fun, but I know I wouldn't even know where to being on ever taking care of farm animals since I wasn't really raised with much animals besides cats and dogs (and my mom's random trial at being a mini-farmer).

Have you been dyeing your yarn or leaving it natural? Prochemical has some nice dyes (I took a fabric dyeing class and used to dye some fabric on my own and that's what we used. I also think that's what Sweetgeorgia uses on her yarns and roving and her colors are amazing).

Darn it! I screwed up!

I was supposed to take 3 in front, put 4 in back, and K1P1 across the cable. Eight rows later I realized that I had put 4 in front and 3 in back and then K1P1 across. Instead of frogging 9 rows, I did my usual trick of dropping the rows and knitting and purling my way back up using a crochet hook. Unfortunately, the sticky nature of wool made it so the yarn didn't evenly redistribute itself like it does for smoother materials. So, now two of the Ks and two of the Ps are really loose while the rest are really tight:

:(

Keep knitting, or frog this part?

I think I only have about 16 more rows and then I am done with the back, then I just have to finish the rest of the armhole shaping for the front (then the sleeves).

---------------------

I meant to post this earlier Liam, if you're interested in dyeing, I use this company's dyes, they're really good (and I think Sweet Georgia Yarns uses ProChemical dyes too): http://www.prochemicalanddye.com/home.php (http://www.prochemicalanddye.com/home.php)

I was hoping you'd say something like that, ripping back a few rows then putting the needle back in is scary when there's like 100+ stitches to worry about.

It should be done in time for autumn. I picked up season 1 of Downton Abbey, so that should give me something to knit to every week.

How's your sweater coming along? Are you working flat or in the round? If in the round, are you using an interchangable needle kit? I have the Denise kit, but I am thinking of looking for something else, because the connector (the blue thing seen in the pictures above) is just so thick it doesn't bend too well and you can't get small needle sizes.

Edit: "three round" to "the round"

Oh, interchangeable needles are great! I haven't used straight needles (excepts DPNs) in ages.

Denise Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahy1hXxQQbw#)

I usually just use these interchangeable ones even when I am not in the round, because I have all the sizes from like 5-15. I bought the kit for around $50 back in 2006 or so and they're lasted and are in great shape up til now. I think HiyaHiya does a kit for the smaller needles, which I am thinking of getting because I have been drifting more toward projects with smaller needles.  I want to check out the "Magic Loop" technique for socks, since my stitches are always kind of loose at the end of the DPNs when knitting those.

Nice sweater. Think the corrected stitches might look more as they should after blocking? I've never really knitted anything I bothered blocking myself. Nor have I cable-knit anything larger than a hat. XD

I'm currently working on this hoodie (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwbis11/KSPATTsporto.php). Just hope I have enough yarn since I had to order it. :p I prefer working in the round with no assembly required.

I have recently taken to the interchangable versions of the KnitPro Cubics-needles, I read that they were easier on the hands, and so far I have to agree.

John Smith, that looks like a comfy hoodie, are you doing it in a similar type of colored yarn?

I've done a few big projects that were cabled,  though I hate blocking them since it seems to make the cabling less lively.  :( I will block it anyway, cuz otherwise it'll probably just look funny. I am not sure how much it'll help the mistake, but it'll probably help a bit.

I'm using Big Fabel 906.

Just finished the hood, looks interesting so far. There's a little more red-tones than I'd like.

I used to knit quite a bit a few years ago but took a long break due to trouble with my hands, so I'm easing into things now.

Oh yes, I am familiar with that yarns, though I've never used it. I was going to use it for a project that was in my queue awhile back.

Whew, finally finished it Nov 2014. (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1337.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo665%2FLearnedHand1%2Firish%2520moss%2520done_zpsdsmqqsyg.jpg&hash=ed674749a3bc9e7d9523c4329896ff8dcedcf509) (http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/LearnedHand1/media/irish%20moss%20done_zpsdsmqqsyg.jpg.html)

It came out great and I love wearing it. It's warmer than my winter coat.

Also did St. Edna from the same book, this one only took 2 months and 4 days.

Hey DriftingCrow, you should meet this LearnedHand person, you both seem to have a sweater fetish!  <running away>

We've already met multiple times.  :D

Next project is St. Edna again in white for a different person and also Trondelag from Starmore's Scandinavian Knitwear. Tomorrow's payday so I might be getting the yarn for Trondelag tomorrow before my money disappears.

I'll be making the Trondelag Man's Sweater  pattern (pictured) but making it using the Trondelag Man's Jacket layout instead (not pictured, it uses a different like boxes and diamonds instead of a little tree pattern).
