Title: Feminizing appearance without transitioning genders
Post by: androyd on November 12, 2013, 06:11:20 PM
Hey there, I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. If it is please move it.

Anyway I'm a 21y/o male and while I don't want to transition to female, I do want to feminize my appearance, since I'm in love with androgyny. I was wondering if I could safely use maybe low doses of hormones to achieve this and would that have any adverse affects? Also, can I get hormones somehow without visiting the doctor's because I feel really nervous about doing that.

Thanks

Whether it will have adverse effects on you is something that you have to discuss with a doctor.  It's likely that you wouldn't have adverse effects if your hormone levels and general health are monitored by an endocrinologist.

Whether it's a good idea to do or not psychologically is something that if you're not quite sure about talking to a therapist would definitely help.

What effects are you hoping to achieve from hormones?

Hmm well I simply want to look more feminine. I suppose I'm not comfortable with being a rugged man, but at the same time I'm not comfortable with living life as a woman, so I just want to shift a little across the sliding scale, if you know what I mean. I don't know why, I just think I would feel more happy with how I looked. I suppose in the end it's a cosmetic thing and that's why I wasn't sure if I should even post it here. And I don't know how a therapist would help me with it because I don't even know how to rationalize it myself, it's just a feeling that I'm unhappy here and I would be happy there. But thanks for your advice... I guess I should see someone

Well there's a lot you can do without hormones to look more feminine.  From small things like plucking your eyebrows all the way up to things like rhinoplasty (nose job) and other feminization surgeries.  All things that you definitely don't need a therapist for and several things you don't even need to see a doctor for.

Hi Androyd, welcome to Susan's Place! A therapist can help you figure out why you feel the way you do, and help formulate a plan. Here is some information on what hormones do to the body: https://www.susans.org/wiki/Hormone_replacement_therapy_(male-to-female)

No one here will help you procure hormones without a doctor, it's completely against site policy.

See you around the site, hugs, Devlyn

Thanks :)

By the way, are there special therapists or doctors I can go to see who are familiar with these issues? I'm just worried about the attitude of a therapist/doctor that I visit and how seriously they will take me.

Yes, Gender Therapists specialize in the field. There are some who do Skype sessions if you aren't near any local resources. Hugs, Devlyn

You probably ought to see a gender therapist to really discern what you want from this, but assuming you are certain - you can just tell te doctor you want to transition and then take it as far as you want. If you live in a city you probably have access to an informed consent clinic. If so, they won't ask hardly anything they'll just prescribe you your meds and monitor it.

If you're unsure of if you want to permanently feminize yourself, then be very careful and slow about this. You might wind up not passing as a boy at all anymore, depending on your current looks and response to HRT.

Nothing wrong with what you're looking to do. In fact, the more I begin to look like myself, the less I care about how I identify, or what I /really/ am.

Well, You can do some laser hair removal sessions + electrolysis and start shaving or epilating Your body hair. This alone would not have an overally feminising effect but coupled with others it will do its trick. Facial hair is the first giveaway and if You want to float in the waters of androgyny, getting rid of that is pretty must (if I am not mistaken).
