Title: Is There a Such Thing as Facial Masculinization Surgery? "FMS"
Post by: Ryuichi13 on September 18, 2018, 11:54:35 PM
I'm not sure where to put this so that it gets seen by more than us FTMs, so I put it here.

I hear the term "Facial Feminization Surgery" quite a few times in my local Trans support group.  But is there a surgery that one can get that masculinizes someone's face?  Is Facial Masculinization Surgery or "FMS" a thing?

I haven't heard of a bundle of surgeries with that name but I know there are masculinizing surgeries such as a chin and jaw augmentation. Check this out:

It looks like there is a such thing.  I'm guessing its not as "popular" as FFS for you ladies, but its good to have options.  Its something to consider while on the road to my true self.

How many trans men would undergo this?

I am guessing that the demand for masculinization surgery is less than for feminization.  Facial hair is pretty unambiguously masculine, and most guys have no trouble growing it once they start on T.  But I do know some trans men who have trouble growing facial hair (and no doubt there are some who don't want to) who would benefit from surgery.

Chin and jaw reconstruction is common, although perhaps more common for things like TMJ and receding chins than for us, but the effect is much the same as in any man with a receding chin this "masculinizes" his profile.

I have also heard of people having surgery to create a prominent Adam's apple, although this seems rarer.

I have unrelated TMJ disorder, so I will go for this anyway, if at all possible.

Most transmen have no trouble with their face after a few years of Testosterone. Pre-pubescent boys have a very feminine face. Then the Testosterone changes everything.

If you still have a weak chin after a few years of Testosterone, take a look at Steve McQueen's face. His chin and jaw are not very large, but he managed to become the manly definition of cool.

Facial feminization surgery, for the most part, involves removing bone, cartilage, and soft tissue in the forehead, orbitals, upper lip, nose, chin and jaw.  To masculinize someone's face would require the opposite, i.e., adding bone, which is much more difficult.  Bone fillers, implants, and relocation are possible but often problematic (infection, migration, necrosis).  I'm not surprised it is not all that popular.

There was a guy posting on here a year of two ago who had FMS.  Young guy. He looked pretty awesomely male.
I did a search on Susans for "facial masculinization" but couldn't find his posts. Maybe he deleted his account.

Actually, I do see some surgeons offering surgery that, while not specifically labeled Facial Masculinisation Surgery, is designed to do just that. Chin and jawline implants tend to be popular. Other procedures are body-oriented, such as pec and calf implants.

**sigh** unfortunately yes.  I had this done back in 1999 and my jaw is now 10mm further forward than it was.  It was not for masculinisation but to repair a malocclusion.  My jaw was too small so my teeth did not meet properly.  I had a mandibular and maxillary osteotomy.  They took some bone out of the top of my pelvis to 'fill the gaps'. I remember the surgeon saying that he'd give me a more masculine profile and that there was plenty of bone in my pelvis to harvest as I had 'child-bearing' hips... If only I knew at the time... damn....
