I've been relistening to a lot of Blink 182 and their related solo projects and spin off super groups. I've decided that their later albums aren't as good as earlier but got an overall bad rap (hard to live up to their first two) and are actually decent, that +44 is completely pointless and should have just been a Blink 182 album (and it would have been a good one), and that Angels and Airwaves is stylish and fantastic. Aside from that, a ton of All Time Low. However, recently was turned on to this following band, and absolutely in love, so I present to you... Sorority Noise.

I recently watched A Star is Born and there a few songs that really touched me. I've watched the movie twice. The second time I cried for a good 30 minutes at the end. Estrogen.... i swear it's a love / hate relationship!

I had a long day at work because of unexpected problems so instead of screaming myself, I opened a long playlist of metal songs, their screaming and the sound of distorted electric guitars makes me feel better.

In celebration of national pi day today (3.1415926535897932384626) I have opened up my favorite music library website to listen to a song again that I found last year due to this sacred day.

Thinking I'm going to make it tradition for me to play Pi vs Pi (https://classic.extrememusic.com/albums/2266?item=39221) annually now.

I love Aja! Was rocking Black Cow yesterday.

I've been rocking a lot of Renaissance lately, they're one of my favorite 70's bands, so dynamic & baroque, one foot in the 70's && one far in the past.

Renaissance - Scheherazade and Other Stories (1975), specifically the song Trip To the Fair. it gets stuck in my head constantly.

Also, one of my absolute favorite groups just got back together & released their first record in 41 years, and it's every bit as great as they ever were. Gryphon - ReInvention. As a fellow Prog fan, if you haven't heard this, you need to. Very Tull-esque.

How cool LaRae, I love the counter melodies and how they play off each other. It is very "Tull - esque"

Sounds great with coffee this morning

Musically, I've been kind of all over the place:

As I write this, I'm listening to Thin Lizzy's "Little Girl In Bloom" (off of the Vagabands Of The Western World album - the last album that their original guitarist Eric Bell played on)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41oo2u3kvA4

It depends upon my mood.  For some crazy reason, I feel like digging into playing "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts on my acoustic guitars lately.  A couple of hours ago, I was listening to Fear Factory (I was in the mood for some sludgy 8-string guitar).  I LOVE Johnny Cash's version of the NIN song "Hurt."  It sounds so emotionally intense (as does Steve Earle's "Goodby Michelangelo"), unlike Trent Reznor's whiny sounding (to me) original version.  I also love good symphonic music (probably because my formal music training was on brass instruments [Baritone Euphonium, and Valve Trombone] - I played in symphonic band through my Sophomore year of college), and Pat Martino's jazz guitar stylings.

Love that record. Tragedy's A-Comin' was my favorite.

Voivod's whole discography. Other than Tool, this band's what's been on heavy rotation for me lately.

Doesn't get much weirder than this. These guys are like the warped child of King Crimson, Black Flag, & Motorhead.

I haven't listened to Voivod in a while (It's too bad that Denis D'Amour died of cancer - he was a major driving force in the band).  They were always pretty good (my favorite album by them is "The Outer Limits").

Tool is cool!  I don't care for the "Opiate" EP, and "Undertow" is a big "Meh" for me, but "Aenima" onwords is good stuff!  BTW, it looks like after 12 years, they're FINALLY going to release a new album (the guys in Tool usually do things album-wise when the mood strikes them to do so, since each of them gets caught up in their own personal projects).  They just played a couple of songs from the new album that's coming out, 3 days ago, for the first time in public, at the Rockville Festival:

Descending
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZJIldL5TZU

Invincible
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akeCFH7YybM

Loove songs in D - they sound so dark!!!  And Adam Jones was playing his awesome early 80s Sliverburst Les Paul Custom through Diezel amps!  Yeah!!  My only concern - it sounds like they may have recycled musical ideas from their previous albums to an extent.

On Voivod, yeah it was really sad when Piggy died, everyone thought the band was toast after Infini, the last album composed of Piggy's leftover riffs. But, they got a new guitarist, apparently picked by D'Amour himself.

Everybody was extremely skeptical, but then they came out with 2013's Target Earth, which shocked everyone because it was extremely good, a complete return to their Dimension Hatross thru Outer Limits sound. The new guy, Daniel Mongrain, is their lead songwriter now & it's seriously as if he were possessed by Piggy himself. It's uncanny. You know it's good when all the people who said "No D'Amour, no Voivod" are putting it on their best of '13 lists.

Then in '16 came the Post Society EP, which was even better (That's what my previous link was from). While Target was pure classic Voivod, on this they actually began pushing the envelope even farther than they did in their heyday.

...And then came 2018's The Wake. This record shook the entire Metal scene. They went to completely new heights on it, & most fans, even the old school ones, are saying it's one of their best ever, with a lot even crowning it THE best. It was the highest-rated Metal release of 2018, & a lot of people are calling it one of the best of the 21st century. If you're a fan, I can't recommend it enough.

And yeah, I completely agree about TooL, Ænima is where they really took off. And I've really been digging the new tracks the last few days. I remember when Adam posted an instagram vid of him playing new riffs, warming up for the new tour. They ended up being from the breakdown at the end of Descending. I'm really looking forward to that record.

Btw, they just confirmed the release date: August 30th. I can't wait.  :icon_rockon:

That's good the hear about Voivod.  I'll have to give a listen to their more recent material.  I bought Katorz, and I was kind disappointed by the sound, and ended up saying to myself, "well it looks like the band is done for now that Denis is dead."

Cool Lisa!  If you haven't heard them, you might want to give Diablo Swing Orchestra a listen.  They're from Sweden, and stylistically have some similarities.  In their case, the musical mutation is adding elements of swing to the music.

We used to play this Kyuss song for fun at band rehearsals (never played it live - it wouldn't have flown in my neck of the woods, where it's da blooze, Top 40s covers [ugh!], klassic rawk, or nothing).  Plug in, crank the amp (both the pre-amp and master volume), and go to town!

Kyuss's definitive album - "Welcome To Sky Valley".

I also likes me some jazzy sounding music (I played in jazz band when I was in college, and when I play clean electric guitar, I gravitate towards jazz).

@EllenJ2003 - Love Blue Collar !!

This morning I'm listening to Jeff Beck - Blue Wind (1976) The bass guitar work on the whole album is stellar and inspirational to me (Wilbur Bascomb).

Cool Lisa!  If you haven't heard them, you might want to give Diablo Swing Orchestra a listen.  They're from Sweden, and stylistically have some similarities.  In their case, the musical mutation is adding elements of swing to the music.

I found this purely by accident today.  Basically it's the circa 1983 song "Blue Monday" that New Order (and Orgy to a lesser extent, as a cover song) made famous.  It's performed 1930s style, complete with instrumentation you could use during that era, and is quite the trip!

I've become thoroughly engrossed in Ren's musical world. His unpredictability is a constant surprise with each new song, offering an array of unique and captivating sounds. His music videos enhance this experience, boasting a cinematic quality that complements his musical style.

renmakesmusic · fire

For a taste of his work, check out this song on Soundcloud: Fire by Ren. . You can explore more of Ren's music on both Ren's Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/@RenMakesMusic) and Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/renmakesmusic).

Ren's introduction to the world, "Hi Ren," marked his unique style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_nc1IVoMxc

His latest album, 'Sick Boi,' achieved the #1 spot on the UK Album charts, an impressive feat considering it was accomplished without the backing of major record labels. Ren's talent can be likened to a modern-day Mozart. He writes his own beats, produces his tracks, and, with his creative team, shoots all his music videos, often on a budget. The quality of these productions is remarkable, showcasing his multifaceted artistic talent. He is known for his one-take video format, he's playing that video live.

But the primary purpose of this post was to let you know that I've integrated the ability to embed Soundcloud and Youtube links into our platform. I thought you might want to know!

I was talking to one of my daughters about musicals-- we're big broadway and dance fans. We got around to decomposing "Hair", so I rewatched. The last scene is resonating:

QuoteWe starve, look at one another short of breath
Walking proudly in our winter coats
Wearing smells from laboratories
Facing a dying nation of moving paper fantasy
Listening for the new told lies
With supreme visions of lonely tunes

Hair - I remember it from back when it was released to theaters, then promptly forgot about it.  Well, forgotten until the eponymous song comes up occasionally.

So, I viewed the picture recently and was, as usually I am when I re watch something from years past, entertained and pulled back into time.  I remember the culture and the interactions with my hippie wannabe friends back then.

The last scene is a doozy.  I really do understand the sentiment and irony behind the scene, yet I want to know how Berger wasn't outed as an imposter.  Did you notice that the grave marker had Berger's correct name on it?  The US Army is so much of a bureaucratic organization, he'd have been found out before final Brigade movement OUTUS.  they would have shipped him back; not put an untrained soldier in the field.  Equally curios is how Claude was able to escape desertion charges, or maybe he didn't?

My wife says I have trouble with suspension of reality, go figure.
My Dad was a US Army lifer and I retired from the USN in 95.  So I get a kick out of directors who get military activities wrong in movies.

I interpret the conundrum of the final scene as the army not caring. The army saw Berger and Claude only as cogs in a machine, not individuals. Perhaps no desertion charges to avoid the scandal?

Regardless, some of the sentiments remain relevant.
