Title: I hate to sound ignorant
Post by: Starla on August 24, 2014, 09:20:45 AM
For those who don't know.....I am pre everything. For personal reason....I do hope to change that in the future.

Anywho. I have been looking into certain multi-vitamins after a friend suggested I take a vitamin d supplement to help with my daily fatigue. I admittingly have a poor diet and don't eat how I should therefore I rob myself of some of the nutrients I need. So please save the "mutivitamins are a waste of money" speech. I agree to an extent actually but this might actually help me.

But back to my original question.....can I take a multivitamin for women? Even though I am biologically male? Would it be a bad thing? I was actually looking at these
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/women.html

Good idea? Bad idea?
I ignorantly assume that the male ones have all these "guy" boosting things in them which is totally off putting. Or am I wrong?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks guys and gals!

I can't imagine it having any negative affects on you... If they advertise making guys buff and all that, I would avoid taking then men's one even though that's probably a load of bull.

Do they make gender neutral ones?

I'm on a lot of vitamins also, doctors orders... Theres really no difference, it's just marketing.. It's much more important to buy quality vitamins in the first place, that are guaranteed highly water soluble, usually you get them at health food stores.. They cost more, but really work, unlike a lot of cheaper vitamins that basically go in one end, and out the other without releasing all of they're vitamins..

Good luck.  :)

No male "boosting" things in generic vitamins or female in female vitamins, just stuff to help common female deficiencies. Without HRT you won't have those.

If you suspect vitamin deficiencies see a doctor and get tested. Some vitamin overdoses are very dangerous.

The easiest way to see the difference between the vitamins meant for men or women is to go to a drug store and read the levels of each ingredient while comparing it to the other. You will find there is little difference. The one that stands out most is the amount of calcium and folic acid in the ones for women.

Vitamins never helped with my fatigue - although they obviously did post surgery and for daily needs. The biggest contributors in my life experience to daily fatigue have been

a) low hormone levels

and

b) thyroid issues

c) being overweight at one point as a result of b).

Getting to the bottom of what is causing your fatigue is important. Being overweight is a very common one - as your blood vessels become "strangulated", either by high blood pressure or by plaque buildup - leading to a lack of oxygen being distributed to your brain and body which causes the tiredness.

Starla,

I do not recommend those body building vitamins because the ingredients listed too many herbals with minimal amounts. There is a possibility of a drug interaction with those herbals when you finally start taking some prescription hormones.

If your diet is not the best, a good quality daily multivitamin is all anyone needs, assuming your doctor has not prescribed a specific vitamin for a specific condition your may have.

The rest is marketing baloney.

Its a fact that there are many people in the western world poisoning themselves with too many vitamins - a fact I found in a scientific article where scientists were debating the best way to educate people on the dangers of taking too many 'supplements' and others and in the face of large pharmaceuticals pushing them for profit despite the dangers.  They also debated the fact that certain synthesized vitamins had no affect inside the body whatsoever.... ( minerals are obviously different and work as is )
