Title: Guilty Pleasures?
Post by: Matthew on December 26, 2015, 05:23:55 pm
We all have guilty pleasures when it comes to music, and lately I've been wallowing in a pit of comforting music that I am ashamed to admit to enjoying to such an extent.

I'll post some of mine below, and I encourage people to do the same - we might even find more music to add to the guilty pleasure list :)

(Note: music discussed herein isn't necessarily bad music, it is just music that we enjoy secretly - as an example I would struggle to admit my love to Jeff Buckley to friends, being a metal head)

My usual music is typical metal, ranging through death metal to nu / hard rock. I also occasionally enjoy hip hop, but lately I've been feeling serious ABBA, Mamas & Papas and Gloria Gaynor vibes.

I've recently started listening to ABBA too  :D. I've also started listening to Wannabe by the Spice Girls  and Staying Alive by the Bee Gees. Also La Vida Loca. No idea why  ::)

I know a long time ago I was strictly modern rock, and metal.
My musical likes grew to classical, to jazz, big band, bluegrass, country.
More recently by watching the series Empire, I have grown an appreciation to hip hop and rap, even though 3 years ago I would go out of my way to change a song if it was rap lol.
My guilty pleasures in artists bands and such are Dixie Chicks, Miranda Lambert, Indila (French pop), and big bad voodoo daddy.

Oh, I love a bit of ABBA. Shameless cheesy pop.

I'd class a guilty pleasure as an objectively awful song I enjoy, so Joe Dolce's Shaddap You Face is one of those.

I used to be a big heavy metal fan, but nowadays I mostly listen to video game/anime music.  However, the song below is one that I would consider a guilty pleasure of mine, and it's heavy metal (yet, still related to video game music, so it still qualifies, lol).

I generally listen to a lot of metal and hard rock, however recently I've started to take a liking to more electronically based music, such as Wolfgang Gartner and Deadmau5, as sort of a "guilty pleasure", per se,

However, I feel one shouldn't have guilt over what kind of music they like to listen to, it's not particularly shameful to enjoy a song regardless of how society received it.

I know it's been a while since there was a post in this thread, but i figured it was worth bring up a zombie.

This is so fricking ridicules though. If someone judges you based on what you listen to then give them the bird and keep walking. Life is too short to stress over this honestly.

I guess I've loved Weird Al Yankovic since I was a child.
I don't consider it a guilty pleasure at all but I know growing up I was considered a big weirdo for liking him. Now he's made a super famous comeback though so guess you could say I was right all along :p

Ps. ABBA is great, no guilt there either.

My two guilty pleasures are already called out here more than once: ABBA and The Carpenters. I'd say they are no longer guilty pleasures - I'm out of the the closet with my enjoyment - especially ABBA!  I also really like 70's disco!

Oh my gosh, so do I Madeleine, I LOVE so much 70s disco (my rock friends would surely lynch me for it) not to mention the ladies' disco fashions back then, seemed to be a lot of satin!  I know most say it's the decade taste forgot but what do they know.

Not everything has to be in good taste - thank god! - the world we be so boring otherwise!

Another former guilty pleasure: Donna Summer.  I think her voice was always calling to my feminine side, even when I wouldn't admit it was there!

This trio of "bad taste" springs to mind:

The Nolans - I'm in the Mood for Dancing
Sam Fox - I Surrender
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart

Excruciatingly bad for most, not for me as the Femme side reveals herself more.  Guilty as charged :P

I LOVE Donna so much, even before my transition.  Those 70s extended mixes are brilliant, she's great!  Never any guilt here :)

What would be your two top songs from the Queen of Disco?

Right now: "Dim All the Lights" and "On the Radio", but I love all of her 70's stuff.  She is really a sexy singer.  Listen to lyrics of "Dim All the Lights"!  When I hear that song now, something feminine in me definitely gets moved.  Whew.

There seems to be a lot of heavy metal / ABBA fans! Wonder why ABBA ends up being the guilty pleasure? Growing up, I always wanted to be the dancing queen.  My mix tape that I listened to at work always got questioned when I played it. There would be Black Sabboth followed by lionel Richie, then Judas Priest and Enya and Weird Al. My you tube suggested music looks pretty random.

I'm a musician I used to play brass instruments (Euphonium in symphonic band till my sophomore year of college, and Valve Trombone in both marching and jazz band till my sophomore year of college).  I've played guitar for 41 years (including hard rock, and metal in bands, and at the present time, acoustic 12-string guitar in a local church band).  When I finish with my hair appointment in a couple of hours, I'm going to my favorite guitar addiction enabler/guitar shop to try out a Fender Telecaster, with a nice, fat baseball bat neck.  I can assure you that I'm not going to be twang banging out country music!  Nope, the gain will get cranked up on the test amp, and I will be checking out the high gain tones of the guitar.  If it passes this taste test, I will probably leave the guitar shop several hundred dollars poorer.   ;D

With that aside, l like many musicians, I fully ascribe to the mindset of "good music is good music, regardless of its genre), and have become more eclectic as I don't like most country, but I do like alt-country like the Sadies, and Jason and The Scorchers.  I also have a soft spot for country rock (one of the best live shows I've ever seen, was The Outlaws back in 1983).  Along with being a metalhead, since when metal wasn't cool, I've listened to punk rock, and alt-rock for decades.  I still like classical, and piano based music that isn't necessarily classical in nature (George Winston's "Moon" comes to mind).  I also like guitar based jazz (when I play clean in electric guitar, I usually play jazz).  But, there are some songs that I like, that would definitely would seem odd for me, to people who know my music tastes:

Kraftwerk - "Numbers"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOoCnK5Jza4

Kraftwerk - "Autobahn"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkOZNJYAZ7c

Gordon Lightfoot - "If You Could Read My Mind"  I LOVE heartfelt music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT_J-LNqVvw

Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald"  I grew up in Northeastern Wisconsin in a small city on the shore of Lake Michigan, and I remember the storm system that sunk the Edmund Fitgerald - it was huge, and even affected us.  We had 70 mph winds, and 18-20 foot waves on The Lake (Michigan that is).  Tons of ships have been lost in both Lakes Superior and Michigan, and their waters get downright ugly when the winds pick up, and like the song, neither lake ever gives up its dead.  To this day, you can see from the shore of Lake Michigan, ore carriers like the Edmund Fitzgerald sailing.

Do you like any other disco queens madeleine?  There are many one hit wonders in the disco world, don't think as much hits as Donna had, could be wrong though.

Gloria Gaynor!  After that, like you said, it is mostly one hit wonders (but so many great ones).  For disco king, that is easy for me: KC and the Sunshine Band.

It's amazing stuff, those mixes on that collection are brill, she'll always be the Queen of Queens!  I was miffed they didn't include Love to Love You which was her shining anthem to me, but ah well, I know I found it some other way, now that is prime Donna, closely followed by I Feel Love of course.  I think it's the only way to hear those songs really, the way they were played on those hot and sweaty disco floors back in the day! >:-)

Yes Kraftwerk!  I also owned a 45 of t"he Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" as a kid, however I did not have a close connection to it like you did.  I enjoy seeing a mix of music and Kraftwerk and Gordon Lightfoot right next to each other is great.

I can't say I'm much of a musician, but I do have eclectic tastes.  I can honestly say that I have something I love from every genre - yes, including country (ok, only classic country), yes, including rap.

I guess my guilty pleasures are Slipknot, Korn and Disturbed among others.

I only listen to them openly with my boys who also like them.

Everyone knows though.

I listen to everything but rap and hiphop. Even classical music and jazz.

My husband likes rock. But not as hard rock as me. He’s more into classic rock.

Lately I’ve also started to fall for Lizzo. Then there is that one song by Maroon 5 (i know!... don’t hate me) called “ Girls Like You”
