Title: Do you enjoy drinking coffee?
Post by: ChrissyRyan on September 01, 2019, 01:17:58 pm
Do you enjoy drinking coffee?

Hot or cold?

What kind?  Are you one that tells a barista some very long order that describes the type of coffee, temperature, flavor shots, and so on?  I often make my own coffee after grinding a blend of coffee beans.

Do you drink your coffee black or with cream?

Do you use sugars or sweeteners, and if you do is sweeteners, artificial or something like Stevia?

I wondered what Americano coffee is.  I might look up its typical blend of beans.

@ChrissyRyan
Dear Chrissy:
An Americano is an alternative to brewed coffee, it is made as an espresso with hot water added to make it less strong...
When I order an Americano I ask for "room for cream" which allows me to add cream and sugar...
... just exactly the way I like it.

My Barista #5 at the next door coffee shop knows that is how I like it so when she brings me coffee or when others get coffee there to bring to me she makes sure I get what I like.
That is a big advantage to living in a very small town and frequenting my next door coffee shop on an almost daily basis.

Danielle

As most of my friends here on the forums are aware, I drink a lot of coffee.
I am usually out of bed at 5:00AM or so and have a couple cups of coffee at home as I get a shower, get dressed and get ready for work....
... then I get to the coffee shop next door to my office around 7:00AM and have several cups of coffee or espressos and visit with my acquaintances and friends there.... then next door I go to open my office and for sure a friend or acquaintance will bring me coffee, or if not, I will always have pot of coffee going for my clients and myself during the day.

I know that I probably drink too much coffee and I try to drink more DeCaf particularly in the afternoon.
I like my coffee light and sweet, I usually sweeten it with Splenda or one of the other "fake" sugar alternatives.... that makes my toothfairy Dental Hygienist sweetie happy with me.... and I want her to be happy!!!

Danielle

I cold brew coffee all summer. There's always a pitcher of cold brew in my refrigerator during the summer. In the summer, I have an iced coffee most days of the week.

Hot coffee in the winter. I grind the beans manually and then use the pour over method using a Kalita coffee dripper. I drink less coffee in the winter than the summer. Maybe only a couple times a week.

I prefer medium-roasted beans. I avoid things like any sort of French Roast or a Peet's Dickason's Blend.

I don't drink coffee in the mornings...I use it mainly as a pick me up in the afternoon.

I always take my coffee with milk.

Occasionally I'll treat myself to a latte at a coffee shop.

You tell me....LOL

I like a 'flat white' its the most popular type of espresso in NZ, like a cappuccino but without the froth on top just the crema - but fine frothed milk mixed in. At my favourite coffee shop I order their 'Elegance' blend - it is a rich choc-lately tasting coffee - its to die for.

I'm definitely in the same camp as Sonja. I love the stuff.

I don't have a particular way of having it, sometimes I do cream, sometimes not. Usually I have saccharin in it instead of sugar but sometimes I do brown sugar, raw sugar, honey, and even molasses on occasion.

Lately I've been roasting my own since I bought a roaster to prepare research samples. I got some beans from Burundi that are just incredible. They get fermented in the pulp for a day or two and then washed, this gives them a bit of a fruity flavor that I've never found in coffee before. That's definitely a coffee that needs nothing added, but it's still really great if you throw cream and sugar in.

OK - Colleen - You might be my one and only person to explain to me this.

The coffee beans that get 'pooped out' and then called the best in the world.....
Can you explain anything to me about Why? What? When? How? I almost can't bare thinking about it and yet I love coffee so much I think - should I.....

Civet coffee?

Honestly I've never had the opportunity to try it. They wash the beans well and brewing will kill anything nasty living in it so there's no real threat of infection or whatnot.

Anyway it's different because the civet cat's digestive tract causes some chemical changes in the beans, which are really just seeds. They absorb some of the flavor chemicals which makes the beans taste different than before they get uhh, "processed"

Oh Yeah!  I used to be able to drink it all day and evening but now I'm down to just breakfast time.  I like a medium roast with a hint of sugar with creamer to lighten it a bit.

Yes that's the one - Thanks, I just looked it up but the wiki article points out its sold more on the story of its origins than the taste - which some labelled BAD.

I don't drink coffee at all. I like the smell, but can't actually drink it. (I don't like the taste of tea either for that matter.)

Actually... I'm just not fond of hot drinks in general. But even the iced versions of tea/coffee I avoid because I dislike the taste.

I only drink black coffee. Has to be freshly ground. Mainly Americano where I ask for (If not doing it myself) an extra shot. Also drink espresso. And of course no sugar

Apparently the civets prefer robusta coffee which would explain part of the flavor difference. Some robustas are pretty harsh tasting even without special processing.

That said there are some really great tasting robusta beans out there and they've always been a component in a properly blended French roast or espresso coffee. They also contain a lot more caffeine than arabica does.

Back in the naughts in the NYTimes travel section, I read about Weasel Coffee, a specialty in Vietnam.
https://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/09/travel/hanoi-s-cafe-society.html

I'd love to try it but it is too expensive to buy in bulk, and Vietnamese restaurants I've asked have not heard of it.

It's made with the aforementioned digestive process.

And my Vietnamese beautician had not heard of it.

I usually make my own coffee instead of buying it at a cafe.
Occasionally I may buy a cup at a convenience store, priced lower than a coffee shop.
I will make several cups of coffee and put them in an insulated mug and it stays hot for hours.
I can make delicious coffee at home from fresh ground beans, it is no trouble at all.

Black, blacker, blackest dark, darker, darkest roast from my Cuisinart grind-n-brew first thing in the morning.

After that a dry cappuccino or americano is good.  Later in the day a cold brew when it's hot or the sweeter lattes/mochas when in cold outside.

I need to build an automatic French Press that works on a timer.  I much prefer press coffee but having to fumble around in the kitchen first thing is just a pain so my drip machine with the timer is what I go with now.

That kind of sounds like a goofed up translation of civet coffee.  Or maybe civets get called weasels in Vietnamese (they do look kind of like weasels.)

I didn't say how many cups (mugs ) I normally drink of black instant Columbian , one "normal" in the morning , a very large (like double) mug when I get to work, one about 10 ish , maybe one before lunch and defo one with lunch and another mid afternoon , I make that 10 normal mugs worth!!!! I need this much just to keep me going, when I go to my unit I take a 1.2L flask that needs 5 heaped spoons for correct taste.

It's literally my only vice, lol. I don't drink or smoke. Coffee is the one thing that gets me through the day, lol. I am not at all sure I could function without it, especially in a morning. The state I'm in when I wake up, before I have a coffee, is one that is liable to get me a headshot in a zombie apocalypse, lol.

Hot, black, no sugar, freshly ground, Colombian.

Mmmmmm....

Right, off to get a coffee, haha. ;D

@davina61

OMG - Davina....How regularly do you go to hostpital with heart palpitations???...lol

@Coleen_definitely
10 is a lot! I only have 4 espresso's a day, too scared to have more than that - I once had to go to hospital with heart palpitations which the nurse there believed was stress and caffeine induced - I was drinking about 7 a day.
It was while I was being monitored the nurse came along, looked at my heart readings that were printing off and then looked worried and said to me "OH How are you feeling?" I said "Great! and raised my coffee as a sort of cheers. He said "You're not supposed to be drinking coffee!" he then showed me the heart rate readings and said "look - here's where you started drinking the coffee your wife brought in" -  he explained it was one of the likely causes of why I was there in the first place.

So now I'm more careful - being able to feel your heart beating inside you because its out of rhythm is very unnerving.

Chose to give it up and drink decaff a couple of years back. For some reason the Testosterone increased alcohol tolerance plenty but whacked caffeine tolerance in the face.

Well I do have a boyfriend and I guess I really shouldn’t have accepted the drink. It was nice though to feel desirable even when I was just in jeans and a T-shirt.

We got to talking while waiting for our drinks. He is a director at one of the businesses in the same area. He was impressed that I was a software engineer. I thanked him and took off and explained the crunch time for the job.

Every once in a while I will have coffee after dinner.

Usually though at business, conference, or fancier outing related meals.

I do not have decaf at home, I usually stop drinking coffee after the morning is over, so I do not drink coffee much in the evening unless I can get decaf.  Paul Neumann's free trade decaf is tasty.
I have seen that in K-cups.

Caffeine doesn't phase me at all. For me staying awake is simply a matter of will but no amount of caffeine is going to keep me up after a certain point. I'll pass out after about 20 hours without sleep. I can literally drink a espresso, mountain dew or anything else that has a bunch of caffeine in it and go to bed five minutes later and be asleep inside of ten minutes and sleep like a baby through the night. The only thing that wakes me up is if I have to use the rest room which is why I don't typically drink anything right before bed.

Oh, you think caffeine is your ally. But you merely adopted the coffee; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the decaf until I was already a adult, by then it was nothing to me but disgusting! The jitters betray you, because they belong to me!

Yes! Coffee! Almost always black, an espresso in a cafe or chain-brewing in my stovetop cafetieres at home. I started roasting my own beans at home too (swirling them around in a hot frying pan; it's just like popping popcorn) which is fun and cheap and means I basically have an infinite supply. Sometimes I add whipped coconut cream to a small black coffee, sort of a vegan einspänner.

But tea is better :p

Hello,

I drank 70 to 130 oz (2l to 3.8L) of coffee a day for ~30 years. I have recently gotten myself free of caffeine addiction (thank you Spironolactone) and I now have 1 to 3 16 oz cups a week. I do love the taste of good coffee. Medium roast (Charbucks over roasts their beans because they are machine picked) with half and half.

I have had coffee in the US, Hong Kong, Japan, Russia, Philippines,  Australia, Puerto Rico, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, and the UAE. The absolute best cup I have ever had was in the UAE. The beans were roasted, ground, and brewed in front of me. They had camels milk instead of cows milk so that was new. Even with that unexpected richness added, that cup was so full of flavor as to be memorable. I had that cup 28 years ago, and I would go back to get more if not for the chance I would be executed for wearing the "wrong" clothing.

Okay, I have to ask... because this has been bugging me for a while. Why do you American folks use ounces as a unit of liquid measurement? As a British person, who uses either litres, millilitres, or even the archaic "pint" as a unit of measurement... this makes my brain go wonky!

Ounces is what you use to make a cake from a very old recipe book! :P

It is the traditional units standard here.  I think it is called the US English system of measurement.

Because having an ounce for liquid measurement which is in no way related to the ounce we use for mass measurement is the MURICAN way.  It's just 1/128th of a gallon, duh.

Honestly I would love for the metric system to become the official standard.  Clinging to this archaic standard out of tradition is annoying.

Or quite expensive and toxic in the manner that I make it for analysis in the lab.

Or quite expensive and toxic in the manner that I make it for analysis in the lab.

So, as a scientist, just how many parts "Happiness" do they contain? ;D

It hasn't gone out for peer review just yet but I'm pretty confident in it.

As we all know 42 is a significant number per the Hitch Hiikers Guidd to the Galaxy

Could we therefore conclude that essentially...

Coffe is the “meaning of life”

That is encouraging.  Perhaps the happiness factor impacts some unobserved underlying factor, such as breast size of the coffee consumer.  Perhaps a confirmatory factor analysis is in order. Silly me.  :)

Nope! I’m one of those weird people that hates coffee. I don’t even like the smell of it.

I drink one cup a day, but it has to be the European style /taste of coffee!  I think Austria is the only country, and there mostly Vienna, which made coffee drinking into a piece of art!  if you go into a coffee house in Vienna, and sample the unbelievable large amount of coffee tastes and methods to drink the stuff, you know what it means to like coffee!

I love having a cup of Sumatran coffee in the morning. Everyone says I make the best coffee. Well it ain't me it's the coffee. Dark roast, chocolate notes. A little Coffeemate vanilla and all is right with the world.

Chrissy. Back in 1977 Jimmy Carter proposed going to the metric system. You would have thought he declared war on the ignorant. An example of why it matters is in the 1970's  a 747 was a custom built assembly because the length of each plane would vary as much as a foot and a half due to tolerances. Today they use CAD CAM and metrics and can build a plane with literally no variance.

I like to make coffee with freshly ground beans, ground just before brewing, rather than using ground coffee.

Can you tell any difference in coffee's taste from immediately freshly ground to buying it ground for later brewing?

Yes - freshly ground makes a huge difference for me. So much more vibrant when you do it this way. Totally worth the 1 minute it takes to grind the beans every time. I only have one cup of coffee per day so I want that one cup to be good.

Yep there's a lot of flavor compounds that react with oxygen pretty quickly once you grind the beans.  They still oxidize in the roasted beans, but it's a slower process because of lower surface area.

One thing I found bizarre is how freshly roasted beans don't always taste good.  Some varieties need a few days to mellow after roasting before you grind them.

I have not bought freshly roasted beans that I am aware of, nor have I tried to roast them.
The beans I do buy are vacuum packed.  The aroma is wonderful when I open the package!

Can’t stand the stuff.  The smell promises much but the taste doesn’t deliver.  I much prefer a nice cup of tea.

Omg COFFEE. For me it’s a latte usually triple shot espresso even better if I can get a nice crema extra foam then whatever flavor reduction I choose, but when I make them the flavor reduction has to be frothed with the milk and the foam has to be micro bubbles. Btw I do make my own reductions. My favorite was make Madagascar vanilla which btw was a home made vanilla cured for about a year in vodka. Then reduced into a simple syrup. Mmmmmmm now that was good. Nothing beats REAL vanilla

I loooovvvveeee coffee. Right now I have a Keurig machine, but I do try buying all kinds of different coffees. I'm not into the high calorie Starbucks style coffee drinks, just regular old coffee and half and half.

Of course, it can also be really bad coffee!

Caffeine lovers? Taste doesn't really matter . . .

If 1'st thing in AM, before even outta bed, it's taken Intravenously ( otherwise it's Brazilian Espresso, tons of sugar, served @ the Rio Intercontinental for sure! )

Airline coffee, served with 20yr old holding tank water, anyone?

Airline coffee onboard is not that good.  I would drink only bottled water or beverages served from bottles or cans onboard.

If you use a creamer, do you use a powdered creamer, dairy creamer, half and half, some type of milk, or one of those liquid type creamers that may also be flavored?

Black with sugar for me. Unless I'm at Dunkin Donuts, then I just get a regular (cream and sugar).

Straight black in the mornings, maybe a cappuccino. Afternoon in the cold months I'll have the flavored coffee. One pumpkin spice latte per year, usually in November,  they're way too sweet for me usually.

How do those work? They kind of look like a Keurig on steroids but my guess is they're quite different.

I've got a Cuisinart grind-n-brew that's starting to show its age. I like it, but not so much rinsing off the parts every day. Also I  don't need to make a pot or partial pot every day.

Good coffee is a delight.

I still shake my head when I see such long lines at a coffee shop as you can make excellent coffee at home far cheaper than at a coffee shop; but, maybe they just like the convenience of having it made.

Anyone that has read even just a few of my posts on my blog/journal threads knows that I like coffee and espresso drinks.

Fortunately my office is next door to a local coffee shop ... and the Barista, the owner and employees, and my friends that are there often know me well.

On some mornings when I don't actually go next door and order my coffee drink... I will find that my sweetie tooth-fairy, friends or my Barista will bring coffee to my office.

I usually get a coffee with a Pink Lid from my sweetie or from the Barista.... or those that know me well.

HUGS and HUGS,
Danielle

Powdered creamer? Blech!  Artificial liquid creamers? Blech!

Usually, I do whole milk. A little whole milk in my coffee is one of the few dietary indulgences I regularly allow myself..

I do find oat milk to be an acceptable dairy-free alternative for coffee. All the other vegan milks aren’t nearly as good, and I say this as a devoted almond milk drinker for my cereal.

Before the world went into lockdown, my daily indulgence was a visit to the local espresso stand- and usually had whatever the barista felt like making.  I've had some really incredible drinks by doing that (and surprisingly only a couple of total bombs- the baristas like to make the stuff they like to drink themselves).

My COVID home version isn't nearly as adventurous.

I feel like I came kind of late to the coffee drinking party as I didn’t start drinking it until I was 27 when I was in military journalism school.

I have since pretty much had a cup of coffee almost every day since which was.... ooof. 25 yrs ago. Dang! That’s weird to think of.

I usually just have whatever is in the pot at the office but a couple of years ago I started using a french press. My wife bought me a coffee grinder  and I’ve really enjoyed the process of making my coffee as much as sipping on a cup o’ joe on a weekend morning.

A teaspoon of raw sugar and a tablespoon or two of creamer.
