Hi everyone!
Newbie question probably covered elsewhere.
I’m MTF and my endocrinologist started me on a normal starting dose of estrogen without any t blocker. I’m on a high dose of finisteride and my labs were within the normal starting range for e and t.
Is it normal to not be on a t blocker???
Thanks!
Holly

It's very normal for a doctor to not put you on two medications at the exact same time. If you were to have an adverse reaction, the doctor may not be able to ascertain which med was causing the problem.

Hello Holly and congratulations on starting HRT. You'll remember taking the first tablet(s) forever! Welcome to the rollercoaster ride.
Yes your medication is normal. I started on E Patches and Finastereride.

I take estradiol and progesterone and have never had a blocker.
Don't know if that's normal, but I'm happy not to take more meds.

Good evening Holly,
A few, not so many years ago, MTF people were just given an estrogen and that's all. T blockers and DHT blockers were not even considered. Once you have been on a good estrogen for a while your bodies own production of Testosterone will decrease anyway.
Depending on your own Testosterone blood levels, your doctor may feel that a t blocker is not necessary at this time. Talk to your doctor and see what they tell you. Your personal HRT regimen should be driven by your own body chemistry, not what is typical for other people.
Take care. :-*

When I was initially prescribed Estrogen, I had already been on Dutasteride for a couple of years, for BPH.
-
Hi Holly, I have been on estrogen for 8 months without any blocker. So far I am happy with my results both mentally and physically.
-
Yes it’s not in common. No blockers here for over two years. The E suppresses the T over time.
-
Ive only had estradiol for several years, but Ive also had an orchie.
-
I was initially only in e but my t levels did not drop so after 6 months I was also prescribed a t blocker - i’m so glad I was because losing the t was almost as great as getting the e to be honest! I feel great now! Xxx

I am on a mono therapy of estradiol. I am older with T on the low end of the range out of the gate. I will re-evaluate my drug therapy with my doctor at the six month mark. If estradiol is not suppressing my T torward the female range, I will look at AAs. I asked my doctor about the use of AAs and she said that without the AAs the process would take longer.

Thanks for the feedback! Makes me feel very relieved. Guess I should always trust the doctor, lol!

Personally I never trust the doctor, especially on hrt. Some of them are pretty good though. It’s worth educating yourself on hrt as a lot of doctors do get it wrong and you don’t know which one you’ve got. A good (bad) sign is not getting blood tests.
Estrogen monotherapy has an interesting history if you look into it.

Hi ya
I was put on a Decapetyl blocker and Estrogen patches from day 1 although Doctor did say either one on it's own would do the required job but she thought this method gave best results. having said that my friend switched to decapetyl recently and she has had 3 months of feeling rough
I'm looking at removing the testicles next so wont need blockers!!!

I only trust the good doctors.

Doctor!

A good doctor will listen to my issues and concerns. They next make a solid diagnosis based on facts. Then they give me options on how to proceed.

Agreed. Also a good doctor will amend diagnosis and/or medication as further evidence (including Blood Tests and discussion with us) comes to light.

Better to trust a doctor than some of the nonsense that's on the web or some of that "alternative" medicine. I'm happy with my doctor and she had no problem referring me to an endo for hormones.

My trusted respected doctor, primary care family medicine, is part of a very large team of medical professionals. My provider manages care for several transgender patients, and after I signed the informed consent wrote the prescription for my estradiol. The good doctor answers my questions, those she cannot answer, she gets the answers from a doctor whose specialty is transgender care. If in the future I elect to have another provider for my transgender care, say I need a vaginoplasty, she will still be my primary care provider.

If you don't trust your doctor, find another one.

Hello again Pammie and Carla
As it happens, I started on E Patches and Finasteride and 6 months later Decapeptyl/Triptorelin (quarterly injection) was added. However it may be advisable for me also to delete it as my T is very low and as I am seeking GRS.
