Anyone watching any really good scary movies for October?
« on: October 16, 2018, 10:47:14 am »
Around this time of the year I tend to start watching a lot more scary movies and ghost show, any of  you ladies into watching the scary stuff at night?   What are some of your favorite scary/horror movies to cuddle up with someone and watch?   I'm looking forward to the new Halloween movie, Jaime Lee Curtis looks great handling that shotgun.

I only watch scary movies when I have someone there to keep me company and right now i don't. So, no scary movies for me!

I wanted to watch all the Alien franchise movies again, as my favorite sci-fi/horror franchise but I got to the third one and decided I'd just stick with those 3.

It was in November, but I watched "The Witch" (2015) for the first time.

Very disturbing, scary film. But let down by the ending. Still, the atmosphere up to that point made it worthwhile.

I think I binged watched a load of found footage films lol, some where actually pretty decent.
Others... Not so much.
There were a couple that where a case of 'This is two hours of my life I'm never getting back'.
Still fun though lol.

I also enjoyed The Witch.  I didn't see anything wrong with the ending, though.

Some critics say that Thomasin was weak because she had doubts about her faith or because she longed for physical comfort or pleasure, as when she is tempted by the taste of butter (chocolate was off the menu in those days, I suppose).  However, I don't share the opinion of those critics.

The Witch was based on real traditions and court testimony about alleged witches.  In that era, the faith and prayers of the whole community were regarded as the source of spiritual strength.  With that premise, the whole family became spiritually weak when the father's stubborn refusal to conform causes him to separate his family from the community.  Among the most vulnerable are the unbaptised baby and the boy with no legitimate outlet for his growing sexual feelings.  Once the mutual trust and support of the family is destroyed, any survivors are at the mercy of whoever does offer to help them.

I think that the story would make more sense if it were set in Europe rather than New England, though, in spite of the infamous Salem witch trials.  If a family went to live in the American wilderness, as many families ultimately did as communities ran out of land, the least likely of the many dangers that they would have expected, even in their own imaginations, would be to encounter a community of European witches.

Today at lunch I watched the first half of Jordan Peele's "Us" on DVD and it's about the scariest thing I've seen in a long time. I really liked his first writer/director film, "Get Out", which was suspenseful, though not really scary. Us is one you'll want to watch with the lights on.

There's quite a few I'm watching over this time on Netflix.  It's hard to find decent quality horrors these days but they're out there.

I can't stand horror movies, I don't believe in the ghosts and goblins they show on screen so I can't immerse myself in the film. Same with super hero movies.

I've watched a few horror movies, I laughed at quite a few of them.

I think you are wise to stop at 3.  A couple of years ago I wanted to do the same thing.  I watched: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, and Prometheus.  First one is my favorite, followed by the second and then a case of diminishing returns after that.

After reading other comments, I think I'm going to try the Witch.

I watched the Alien with Winona recently for the first time.  It was cringey in parts alright but watchable all the same.
