When one California girl decided she would like a unicorn for her backyard, the only reasonable solution was to contact the county for permission.

Identified only as Madeline, the girl's handwritten note dated November 14, read, "Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one. Please send me a letter in response. —Madeline"

The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control wasted no time in replying to the young girl's request in a letter dated Nov. 30 titled, "Unicorn Licensing."

"I am pleased to tell you that the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control does license unicorns," the letter read.

But there were conditions. The letter stated:

1. The unicorn must be cared for in compliance with all animal caretaking regulations set forth in Los Angeles County Code Title 10.

2. The unicorn is given regular access to sunlight, moonbeams, and rainbows.

3. The unicorn is fed one of its favorite treats — watermelon — at least once each week.

4. The unicorn's horn must be maintained to be in good health. This requires polishing at least once a month with a soft cloth.

I don't have a Unicorn license, but I live in a rural area and so far no one has complained about my small herd... please don't turn me in!

Her request is not an unreasonable one at all and I hope she finds one to love and care for!🦄

I have a unicorn in my yard each day but, i confess I have skirted the permit process!... His name is Omelette... He and his brother Scrambles were born behind our house about a year and a half ago… He comes to visit every day and I am honored he has touched my hand a few times with his nose!💕

On her seventh birthday, the California girl who requested permission to keep a unicorn in her backyard was presented the official license.

Last month, Madeline composed a handwritten note to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control, requesting approval for a unicorn, should she be able to find one, along with a response.

Within days, Marcia Mayeda, the department's director, replied to the message with a letter titled, "Unicorn Licensing." "I am pleased to tell you that the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control does license unicorns," the letter read.

However, she included a number of conditions to be met, including access to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows for the unicorn; weekly watermelon feeding; and use of non-toxic glitter only.

Until Madeline was able to find one of the rare creatures herself, Mayeda included a little unicorn for her in the response, as well as a preapproved unicorn license.

Weeks later on Saturday, Dec. 17, Mayeda presented Madeline with the county's official unicorn license, reviewing the previously mentioned requirements. Once assured the conditions would be met, Madeline was then graced with a giant plush unicorn.

Me Too!!!… He is a special fellow!… Normally the year old males get run off by the herd and they set up shop elsewhere in the area… His brother Scrambles left but Omelette stuck it out even when a lot of them were trying to run him off and eventually he wore them down with his tenacity… He has another male his same age he is best friends with now and a girlfriend we call Sophie… They make a very cute couple!!! 💕🌻🦌🦌
