Foundation for the complete idiot?

I've practiced makeup for years and still am no better than when I started watching Youtube tutorials years ago. My foundation either looks too cakey/like the Joker or like I'm not wearing any at all. Is there any foundation brands you could recommend for oily, porous, fair skin? I've always wanted to wear foundation but I look like garbage in it, despite following all the Youtube guides.
