I'm currently penning a motto that compares certain transsexuals.

My experience has been that there's two types of transsexuals; those that value facial and body changes because they cannot realistically pass "as is" and those that care more about genital identity because they already can "pass" to the extent that makes them happy.

Isn't this a bit like Reps and Dems? Aren't Reps usually the ones who support ideas based on "What I already have." (Reps are usually white, rich, religious, and innately successful) while aren't Dems the ones who seem to fight out a desperation of "I don't have anything at all."? Say it's a Healthcare argument, aren't Reps the ones who dislike universal healthcare because they can already afford medical care, while the Dems are usually the ones who have so many health problems that are eating them out of house and home?

I compare this to the two types of Transsexuals. I've noticed real quickly that the folks who worry more about genitals tend to have never had the horrors of looking like a man - it seems many of them grew up being able to pass very well, and literally 'don't have to worry about the face/body too much", while those that worry more about the face and body tend to the be the ones who are desperate to pass at jobs or relationships, pretty much to earn money to eventually afford genital surgery. This type of trans seem to think along the lines of "I have to do the face/hormones now because it's cheaper and will earn me even more money by giving me more job opportunities and at least better confidence and happiness, THEN I'll do genital surgery."

I'm just bringing this odd comparison to light because, a bit like the Reps, genital-focusers tend to talk negatively about facial surgery or even hormones, while the folks who care about appearance tend to promote all sides of the picture. I'm not trying to negatively label anyone and this is only a stereotypical view of things I've noticed, but I just wondered if anyone else here found this comparison to be a bit amusing or common!

Honestly babe, sounds like you need to stop comparing   :o
I kinda see what you're saying but you are generalizing 4 groups of people down into two..

I have to agree, it is a little to general. I could make anything look like a decent comparison with enough vagueness. I once wrote a comparative essay between picking out a pastry for breakfast and picking a date out of a group of people lol. It was as absurd as it sounds, but it came out very well, because being vague and generalizing can make anything look right :P

First I think your notion of Dems and Reps is based on faulty logic.  Otherwise the Kennedy's would be reps and Colin Powell would be a Dem.  In it's simplest form the reps don't believe the gov. is the best able to take care of everyone's needs and the dems think the gov is the best way to take care of everyone's needs.  The dems would tax everyone to pay for it while the reps would let everyone keep more of their wealth so they can pay for it themselves.  In one way you are totally correct.  The less you have the more you want to see wealth redistributed.  The more you have the more likely you are to want to keep it.

I'm not sure if I agree with you about transsexuals either.  I think passing is important to all transgendered people.  For me personally a lot of that has to do with how other people will perceive me and weather or not they will accept me.  Who doesn't want to be good looking?  OK, I'll concede if you already pass maybe you move faster to changing your sex since that's all that's left.  But making the whole process complete with surgery is individual to each person.  And how important it is varies with each individual.  I might be way off base and totally wrong but I think finances has as much to do with that as anything.

Any discussion that starts: "there are two kinds of people" makes me roll my eyes... I think it's obvious to anyone who's spent enough time around Susan's that there are as many kinds of trans person as there are people who call themselves trans. What matters (or doesn't matter) to each person about how their appearance is, or is perceived, differs very widely - and often differs widely during the course of their transitions too. So I'm afraid I'm inclined to respond to this as being way too coarse-grained to take seriously.

People have different priorities, it's nothing new.  Doesn't necessarily say anything about their ethical fiber, either.

I thought it was really good and a good way to think about what it means to be a transsexual from a different kind of perspective. We can use this analogy with lots of people in society and I for one enjoyed reading the post. Of course there are all kinds of girls, from those who want one of the other or both. I actually am unsure of SRS. It is something I find very intriguing but when I first began my desire to transition was never something I felt something I wanted. Now through all the pain it has made me want it at times more than anything. I overall just want to pass more than anything regardless of SRS. I think you wrote a very good story and it made some really strong points. Even though there are many variables you could probably use this analogy to understand the different kinds of people that are transsexual.
