The new law is an important one, and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) successfully lobbied for its passage—in spite of an incredibly hostile political climate. We are committed to ending the more than 1,100 federal benefits denied to same-sex couples, and this was a historic first milestone in that process.
We are extremely disappointed that the IRS did not interpret the provision to be mandatory for companies to adopt. The IRS's interpretation, however, should not overshadow the concrete impact of this law. The PPA will still benefit countless gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees and their loved ones.
