Old certainties about gender identity are disappearing as fast as a woman in a Maserati, writes Stephen Bayley.

'God, I'd love a pint of beer!" I heard that from my daughter, whose genteel curriculum vitae includes (Camilla's old school) Queensgate, Oxford and the Sorbonne. At the time, she was smoking a cigarette most readily associated with cowboys and wearing workmen's boots. I was so surprised, I nearly dropped my moisturiser. You know, there was a time when a man wearing suede shoes was under suspicion, but when prime ministers spend all day covered in bright orange make-up, snap judgments can be misleading.

Traditional determinants of gender identity in the clothes we wear and the products we use are blurring fast. When asked to tick a box on one of those annoying local authority questionnaires that demands to know whether you are male or female, I am always tempted to avoid a straightforward yes/no answer and write: "It depends."
