I was at the grocery store tonight getting dinner, when I noticed a person, at least 6' tall, watching me. Some thing seemed wrong for some reason, like she was out of place. I smiled at her and just kept shopping.

She must be a late transition and not adapted yet. Clothing was appropriate, but her height, some thing in her face....

As I sit here, thinking about it, how did I feel at the moment of recognition. A bit of shock, sure, a bit of feeling sorry for her. Tall, older than me, possibly no one to talk too? Its a small town, I cant go shopping with out meeting some one I know, but I have never seen her before.

Do others feel the same way (well maybe differently) when they meet me? I transitioned 21 years ago. I dont really remember it that well.

I'm a bit confused as to how I should have handled the situation....

You did the right thing by smiling and going on about your business.  The last thing someone at that stage probably wants is to be clocked by anyone, even a kindred soul.  Blending in and being accepted at face value is the goal.  And if by chance your estimation of them was wrong, what are you going to do anyway?  I don't think there's really any reason to ever point out to someone you notice they are transsexual, unless they reveal themselves to you purposely.

If you befriended them first and then at some point history came out, that would be a different story.

Yeah I agree. I just want to blend in. Hopefully I do.
Dont think I get many looks though. A few people know who I am, but I know who they are and basically avoid them. Small town s**t....

BTW.... I looked up "girls rule" T shirts. I found "Girls rule. Boys make good pets" OMG I want one  :)

Sounds like you did exactly the right thing.  Either she will be happy at being accepted as just another woman in the shop; or if she clocked you, will be happy that she is not alone in town.  Either way she will feel good. If you meet regularly it could be the start of a local support group, or a least a friendship.

" BTW.... I looked up "girls rule" T shirts. I found "Girls rule. Boys make good pets" OMG I want one  :)"  Me too!

hmm...I'll settle for my shirt that has 'girls kick butt' on the front...back has three other lines: "yes I'm a girl" "yes I'm an athlete" "yes I'll kick your butt"

Last year I had a guy coming on to me that said sometime during the evening, damn, you look like you could kick someone's ass, lol. Not sure that was really a compliment, but I think he meant I was toned, so I'll take it as one. Maybe I should get a t-shirt like that too, except I'm really a pussycat.

LOL!

I actually found it in some little touristy t-shirt shop...may have been my trip to Durango a few years ago.  I have a few others that express a similar theme related to athletic endeavors but none that expressed the sentiment so succinctly  >:-)

Well...on second thought...there is a Texas one that sends a message since it was provided by a program within the athletic department, but that is an implied message as opposed to the direct printed message  ;D
