Ok, I look like I came out of a sewer in 1993 with the way I dress. I'm tired of baggy stuff and want to wear slimmer things. I'm a little heavy and I'm short. I wear a size 38 pants so, skinny jeans are out. I'm also looking for jeans that hide my hips. Does anyone have any suggestions on good jeans? I'm about 5'1 so I cut a lot of my jeans because of the length. I find when I hem them the hem comes out and it just looks stupid. So, something for shorter guys would be nice too. Thanks!

I'd go with straight leg jeans - but in size 38 (not larger, or you'll be getting into baggy again) ... from what I understand, even if you have hips, if the rest of the leg goes straight down from there and you wear a shirt that covers the general hip area (hitting right above the hip line) then that might work.

And don't just cut off jeans ... that's going to look really rough. A lot of dry cleaners also do sort of inexpensive tailoring, they could probably hem them for you and it wouldn't look bad. I'm short as well only I have a sewing machine and have mastered hemming jeans ;)

Also, you're going to have to go somewhere and try stuff on. I've noticed some men's pants actually do fit hips pretty well, while some are so straight that if you have any hip at all you're not going to fit into them.

Yeah I was going to suggest having them hemmed. Keep your eyes peeled around the neighbourhood -  often find signs that offer pant hems between $5.99 and $10.99 while I'm out walking or on the bus. I'm 5'3'' and I wear 30" length so you can probably go for 28. If you're not sure they can probably measure you.

Straight leg or boot cut are good, not baggy but not skinny. :P

Try on some Levi 'Slim Fit' jeans.  Despite the name, they're cut full enough in the leg to give room for thighs without looking baggy, and they aren't tapered.  I'm 5'4", 150lbs and get 32/30.  I'm pretty sure I've seen 38/30, but 38/28 might be a harder find.  JCPenney has them, and they can order stuff if they don't have your size in stock.  Stick to darker colors, and avoid any with that faded/wrinkled effect on the hip/groin area (emphasizes hips).

I've also noticed that Arizona jeans (also from JCPenney) tend to have a fuller cut in the hips and thighs (especially for mens jeans), while having a smaller waistband.  I found these great a couple years ago, when my hips were large relative to my waist.

'Straight leg' and 'boot cut' are magic words when I'm looking for jeans.

Also: 1993 and coming out of a sewer?  Anybody else get the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon theme song stuck in their head from that?

I'm 38 x 29. I know Axist, Dockers, and Apt 9 sells pants in that size. Fit's me perfectly. I go for straight fit. My pants aren't baggy or skinny. The Gap sells jeans with an inseam of 28 but it's just as long as my 30s.

I have a picture with me wearing Axist pants. It sucks and the counter is in the way, but you can get an idea of how they fit someone with a 38 waist.

Thanks! You look good!

I like Gap jeans. They gave a 28 inch length available which is close to the right length for me. I like boot cut jeans and feel like they make me look slimmer.

I'm 5 foot 2(ish) and about 190 lbs.

I tend to have the opposite problem finding jeans.  I'm about 5'9" and weigh about 125, so kind of built like a stick figure.  I mostly wear boot cut or straight leg jeans, but its hard to find a 29" waist with a long enough inseam.  My current favorite jeans are a dark wash low rise straight leg from Rue 21, that I amazingly found (on the clearance rack!) in a 30x33.  I usually end up with 30X32 cause its pretty easy to find, and I have a pretty big belt collection.

kyle i have the same problem 5'8" and like 120-125 pounds so i wear slim or skinny jeans because everything else looks huge but i found some jeans are too big in the hips so they poof out and look like hitlers pants  which is so not flattering.

I wear a 38 as well.  I also have no ass -- so jeans look big and baggy on me.  However, recently my wife took me jeans shopping and god only knows how many jeans I tried on.   I found that wranglers cowboy cut fit me really well.  I get sir'd when I wear them all the time

I've got the same problem as Rob, I've got absolutely no butt. All my fat goes right into my gut, so either it fits there and is baggy (which I also hate) or it fits everything else and I look like King Muffintop.

Skinny jeans don't neeeeed to be out, though. Hell, the last pair of mens pants I bought were a size 54 and I wear skinny-ish jeans. Just don't get the super clingy ones. Someone else mentioned boot cut, they can be your bestest friend ever if you can find ones that fit right. Personally, I still usually wear womens' jeans. I've got no "shape" to speak of, so that might just be something that works for me, but if you're willing to try it out, search around for womens boot cut and see if you can find a decent pair. I'm short too, so I can relate to that annoying dickery.
