Rally to derail marriage amendment

With lawmakers listening from the balcony a floor above, about 300 citizens rallied and cheered an effort to halt Senate Joint Resolution 7 – a proposed amendment to the Indiana Constitution that would define marriage as between one man and one woman.

Indiana law already reflects this language.

"This is the last hour to defeat this evil," said Randy Studt, chairman of Indiana Equality, a grass-roots group seeking justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Hoosiers. "We must stop this effort."

The rally – titled "Read the Fine Print" – was highlighted by Candace Gingrich, sister to former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who works for the Human Rights Campaign to encourage youth in the fight for equality.
