Understand your point Steph, but any misunderstanding was entirely down to the press and the way they manipulated the story to make it saleable.
I can say that with confidence, firstly because like many, I know the British press very well. Second rate journalists, working in some regional paper want to get into the nationals. That means getting noticed.
Secondly, transgender is a generally used and well understood term here in the UK. Here, anything with the word sex in it tends to imply availability. Most, but not all the organisations which have sprung up, appparently, over the last 20 or so years tend to emphasise the term Transgender.
