Alright so a little over a month ago(September 3rd of this year) me and a friend were being rather stupid and I ended up in the ER with a Type 3 Shoulder Separation on my right hand side, was put into a sling, and sent home. I was sent to a specialist and saw said specialist about a week afterwards, and he had told me that I could continue to wear the sling if I wanted but that it was not required and I should be fine a couple weeks and that he wanted to see me in a month. Welllll that couple of weeks has gone by and my shoulder not only still hurts like HELL but the pain has also begun to work its way into my neck as well. I'm not going to ask if anyone can tell me how to fix this because I wouldn't expect anyone who doesn't have all the schooling and licensing and who hasn't even seen the xrays to begin to tell me anything about it. Rather I would like to ask if anyone can give me some solutions as to how to get this damned pain to go away! Ibuprofen and other otc pain killers are out of the question because they have never worked for me for anything other than a headache, and I ran out of the Codeine/Ibuprofen script they gave to me a longgggg time ago. Icing it doesn't help, and the contraption my parents have to ice ones shoulder is rather large, bulky, hard to put on, and actually makes it hurt more when I wear it. It still is so useless though to the point where I have a constant dull pain in my neck and shoulder, and were I to actually use it I found I cannot get more than 3 pushups out of it where as I used to be able to push atleast 200. Any tips or tricks to try would be most helpful because this really does hurt and I want something to try to help ease the pain. Please and thank you very much.  :(

If your shoulder is ok from a medical perspective I would suggest physiotherapy from a qualified practitioner and possibly acupuncture for the pain. Some physios do both.

Doing push ups is probably not a great idea as it's only just over a month since you sustained the injury and these things take time, perhaps even months. Probably rest and manipulation by a physio would help.

There are also gels one can use based on Ketaprofen and Capsaicin. The latter works in a different way being based on an extremely strong chili pepper extract, think it interrupts nerve signal transmission by putting them into shock or something like that. Do not ever get it on your hands and touch your face or delicate bits, that hurts more than you can imagine!

Hi,

I would call the specialist back. It sounds as if the injury has progressed and it would be very sensible for it to re-examined. Specialists are use to this sort of call.

If you can get Panadol-forte they may help. The laws about getting drugs vary so much around the world that it's difficult to know what you cane use. Also be careful not to over medicate, most pain killers are really quite toxic and the damage is generally irreversible, such as paracetamol poisoning.

I would not try strenuous exercise until it has been re-examined.

Sorry about your pain.

Went back to the doc today, he asked me some questions but not really much of anything, said my arm should just stop hurting over time but if not to schedule for another appointment. So I will probably end up doing that, but in the meantime I still want to find things that can help like perhaps exercises or stretches? One of the things I've noticed is that when it stiffens up it tends to hurt more but I haven't figure out how to stretch the part of my shoulder that hurts(more located on the top of my shoulder close to where the neck meets with them)

@mimpi
For the physiotherapy they do stretches and exercises and such to work the muscles and ligaments back up to speed correct?
If so my dad had shoulder surgery a while back and still has many of his exercises on paper and how to do them, could possibly look into those?

I haven't tried to do them since that night >.<
But I do feel like I need to do something that uses my shoulder, just without putting anything near what I weigh on it.

Ohhhh yeah I know not to do that one xD bahahaha
I've bitten into peppers and such before and had the juices run onto my fingers and licked them without thinking about it
Shortly there after my mouth is on fire hahaha
Learned early on not to put anything that's involved with things being spicy anywhere I don't want them xD

@Cindy
As I said I saw the doc today and he didn't say much about it so I'll probably let it go for a little bit and see if the pain dissipates.
If not though I will definitely be calling him up again.

That one I cannot get here :\
About the only substitute I could get would be something like ibuprofen or tylenol neither of do much of anything for me :[
And I dislike taking pills but I think if I could stretch my shoulder more it might help it a lot.

It's alright though was mostly my own fault >.<
Everyone makes stupid decisions once in a while though lol

For what it's worth, I've found that gentle dancing to music you really like is very good exercise for sore muscles. With "official exercise" it's very easy to get tense and push and overdo things, but I've found that dance is very relaxing and at your own pace, and the fact that it's really pleasant makes it much better exercise. So get somewhere on your own, turn down the lights, turn up the music, and waves your arms about like a damn hippy. It's for medicinal purposes :).

The exercises for physical therapy are not rocket science but they are different for each kind of injury.
I do exercises with a 3 foot long 1-1/2" wooden dowel, rubber stretchy bands and 2 pound weights.

NSAID (Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammation Drugs) serve to reduce pain but also prevent inflammation while healing.
Heat before and cooling after exercises is supposed to help healing.

It can be a slow process. Try not to overdo it and re-injure yourself.
