so i was watching the new episode of pysch on hulu and it really pissed me off. especially because there was no reason to even bring up transgender anything.

"forget about him, or her, or it. if it was transgender."

such a dumb and rather insensitive thing to say and transgender people besides those who are gender queer are hims and hers. this just really pissed me off. i think whoever wrote this was thinking intersex not trans, even then you never call a person 'it' thats super disrespectful. i just wanted t put that out there.

if you want to watch it for yourself here is the link: http://www.hulu.com/watch/288324/psych-shawn-rescues-darth-vader#play-queued-show-by-original_premiere_date-asc

I don't blame you for getting upset about this.  It only shows that the general population desperately need to be better educated on matters pertaining to transgender people.   :-\  The more people know, the less they tend to act like jerks.

It's most certainly a demeaning, ignorant comment to have on a tv show. Does it surprise me? No. Throughout my whole life I've had people throw out comments like this - basically just dissing another human being for how they look or what they like, etc. I can't really do anything about it though and it doesn't help to get angry over it. You're going to run into it a lot in life.

Transgender is not something that's mainstream by any means. Heck even homosexuality isn't really mainstream. The majority of people in America still either believe it's wrong or are of the opinion that people can do what they want behind closed doors but don't drag it out into the spotlight. Yes, there's now a little more attention on "trans" topics with other shows, celebrities "coming out", the general LGBT movement etc. but it's still on the fringe. The majority of people are not going to respond well to something they don't like or don't understand (and are not even wanting to understand it).

I hope that someday people could at least just accept the fact that yes, gay people exist, trans people exist, intersex people exist - there a world of variations out there - and we're all human and we're all just wanting a little consideration and respect as human beings. Unfortunately, humans also tend to be jerks without a lot of common sense.

I just watched that episode, and I LOVe Psych.  and my opinion is that it didn't bother me.  Especially if you think about the context.  He was trying to think on the spot.  he first called the intruder a "he" but then didn't even want them to know that much about the intruder so to through them off he called the intruder a "she", but then he realized that implied it was a person, and originally he had claimed it a raccoon or something.   So then he just called it an "it."
and then he realized that sounded dumb it call the intruder a "he-she-it."  So he quickly adds, "It's transgendered."

I didn't think that was offensive at all.  It just seemed like he was trying to come up with this spur of the moment and was stumbling over words while trying to come up with an out.
I don't think he was actually calling trans people an "it".  It just came out that way because of how he was stumbling over his words.

Hmm.  I actually see what you mean, JohnAlex; maybe they didn't mean it like that, which is always a possibility.   :)

eh yea it sucks, but on tv we've got a lot of pretty borderline offensive things that are funny because they're borderline [or oftentimes just outright] offensive.

Psychs still a fantastic show in my book.

I haven't watched the episode yet, but I'm doubting if I hadn't read this first it wouldn't have even crossed my mind as having potential to be significantly offensive.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

I usunally get annoyed over the news,
laterly we got the transgender stuff in the media and people tend to be aganst the doctors and so saying all kind of ->-bleeped-<-, how wrong it is and so on,
I really hate it.

It's not as bad as the transphobic crap I saw on Jerry Springer. Calling a transwoman a guy. That's offensive.

Well that does put a whole different spin on it. Maybe what the writers were actually trying to make a joke of is political "correctness"?

Jerry Springer is as fake as Psych is.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

The word "transgender" is just another label that the media likes to poke fun at.
no ->-bleeped-<-, right?

So I wouldn't take offense.
It doesn't matter if its a show you like - they're all the same.
Cheap shots at labels for the ignorant to laugh at.

Family Guy had a pretty ->-bleeped-<-ing transphobic episode, it wasn't just one joke, it was the WHOLE episode.

It's all recycled garbage :P

I watch little kid cartoons still... so yeah.

Quote from: Kvall on October 14, 2011, 05:23:42 PMOr maybe we don't actually have to perpetuate transphobia by giving thin justifications for it.

It's okay to enjoy a show while being aware of and bringing attention to its problematic aspects, such as this instance.

I am not giving justification for transphobia because there was no transphobia in the show.
There was nothing offensive or wrong with what the show did or said.  see below.

But if y'all want to keep believing everyone victimizes you so you have something to complain about, go right ahead.  I won't stop you after this.

I don't think so.  I think it's way simpler than that.  I think it was simply the character stumbling over his words, and it came out wrong, which is part of acting, to make it seem realistic.  and that could have totally happened IRL, too.  It only sounded like he was calling trans people an "it", but if you heard the context, he actually wasn't.

No one in the show is going to jump up and say, "Hey that's not cool to call trans people an it!"  This isn't LogoTV.
You were supposed to laugh that he was stumbling over his words.  and that was it. move on.

I honestly think no one needs to be offended by this.  I had to even replay the scene like 3 times to even hear exactly what he had said.  He said it so fast.  everything he mumbled fit into like 3 seconds.
The show did not have a trans person in it.

In fact, in a previous season and episode of Psych, there was a transgender/cross-dresser in the show, and I thought they were very accepting of it and no one in the show was offensive at all.

^ I agree. So if someone gets confused with the he/she and then 'it' automatically means transgender? Not cool, enough people do that in the street, guess what? t.v shows too, ummm, yes, keep the association with 'it', at this rate it's never gonna end.  ::)
