The politically charged and complex issue of sexual orientation has long evoked an array of emotions and misunderstandings.

If the subject can be said to have a unifying badge – one that focuses on the reality of cultures based on gender identity – it lies with the term "LGBT," referring to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Related to that sociological landscape is a Sacramento City College class taught by psychology professor Gayle Pitman. The purpose
of "Psychology of Sexual Orientation," Pitman explained, is "to give students the chance to see the reality of the lives of LGBT people."
