this law and order svu episode is pissing me off a lot. a MTF 16 year old was murdered and they kept on calling her he.

at first assuming that he/she was a ->-bleeped-<- and not a transsexual would mean that saying he would be iffy (not sure if it would be wrong or not)

however a women said that she was saving money for surgery. so definitely a MTF.

this is pissing me off a lot especially because all the law and order shows are supposed to sensitive. ill put the episode name and such when i find it out.

Yeah, that is offensive.  I'd like to know what episode it was.

Some people I know like to call transgenders by what they "look" like the most.  So, like me, I'm not on T, so everyone knows I have a female body, and it makes it more natural for them to want to call me "she" and once I'm on T and my voice lowers, it will be more natural for them to want to call me "he."
Not trying to defend them.  I think it's just ignorance.

I did see this one Law and Order SVU episode that I did like.  It was about these male twins.  but one of the twins had a "circumcision accident" where he lost his penis.  And the parents met some freak doctor who convinced them that it would be best to raise the baby as a girl so he didn't have to grown up as a man without a penis.  And the kid was now a teen in the show, and was completely miserable.

Anyway, the reason I liked the episode was because I was actually watching it with my grandma, who is very much against gays and trans and doesn't know that I'm trans.  But the show allowed me to talk to her about trans and intersex people.  Because my grandma believed that what the doctor in the show did was wrong and that the boy should have been raised a boy.  And I started talking to her about intersex people and then trans people.  She kinda stopped talking, but I could tell she was thinking.  Maybe she won't be so bad when I finally come out to her.

that sounds like david reimer, exactly like david reimer. good luck with your grandma.

Is it the episode "Fallacy" with Kate Moennig playing a trans woman called Cheryl?

If so I think that episode has a positive message in the end. It at least portrays our struggles accurately, and people tend to sympathize with the main character of shows so it may open their eyes a bit.

The only review on IMDB is positive:

If it's a different episode, feel free to ignore this.

I am curious of the episode name.  Of the numerous ones I've seen they have been handled well and respectfully.

This sounds very similar to a novel http://www.amazon.com/As-Nature-Made-Him-Raised/dp/0060929596

That's because it is a true story.  As Nature Made Him is about David Reimer.  The Law and Order episode is based on that.

This has nothing to do with SVU, but I was watching the news at work today and there was this story about this 7 year old mtf who wanted to join  the Girlscouts and the headline for the story was 'Boy Wants to Join Girlscouts'. They kept calling her 'him' and using her birth name. Yet another awful representation of trans people in the media.

gender non conforming kids are generally not trans and do not identify as the opposite gender in adulthood, but calling that kid he is really offensive. so also not a representation of trans people, but still por portrayal of gender non conforming people.

OMG, so I finally got around to watching this episode, and man, it was bad.
First thing they say when they find out she's trans (and they find out when they look under the sheet and say "stem's still on the apple.", "A ->-bleeped-<-!  Jane Doe's a John."  Then they call her a "->-bleeped-<-."   And they say "he" every singe time.  "Were you surprised to find out he was a boy?"  "Do you like little boys who look like girls?"  "Male prostitute"

Other things I gathered was that the trans person was 15 and was saving up for SRS surgery.  And the story didn't even need to have a trans person in it.  the trans person was only mentioned in the very beginning as the person who got in the way and was accidentally killed.  very irrelevant to the story.  could have been an old lady instead.

And what's worse, to me, is how respectful they were of the Catholic church the whole time.  Calling the priests "father" too.  And one of the detectives apparently is Catholic.  Not that I'm saying they should disrespect the church, but they were OVERLY respectful of the church, and then not respectful at all to trans people.

I didn't like it at all.
