It really depends on what person is offering the ride. If it is a single shady looking male then absolutely not.
If there is a woman involved and they show a bit of class then yes.

well it all goes to say you can't judge a book by it's cover.  I have friends all over this continent, but the majority that I would rely on in a true crisis ARE shifty lookin mofo's.  My friend george for instance, has a shaggy mop of black hair on his head, trailing all the way down to his ass, has scars covering a good 40% of his face, and generally wears jeans ripped up and worn out with ancient t-shirts of his rock bands.  I gurantee if he was in a bad situation and needed to bum a ride he'd be turned down by 99.5% of the population...but he's the most kindhearted soul I know.

And plenty of serial killers have been cute, young, attractive people

I think we definitely all have our own definitions of "sketchy" and "shady."

I'd never get in another person's car if I didn't know them. Not a women, not a man, no one. I'm a small dude, I can't fight, and I tend to do really badly under pressure! I don't like cars much as it is, and someone else's would just freak me out so bad. I've seen a lot of movies, and things like that usually don't end well.

(not that I put a lot of faith in movies, but still)

I accept rides from strangers, but not if they seem to have a "bad vibe" or whatever you want to call it. Never had a bad experience with it (unless you consider spending an hour in a car with a religious guy trying to convert you, a bad experience). Now that I'm transitioning I do feel less vulnerable though, because I pass consistently as male and I think it's less likely someone would have bad intentions of offering a ride to a guy, than to a girl.

Living in Australia I've come across a few  backpackers who are looking for a lift from the  centre of the city...I'll give them a lift to the edge of the city to the highway as its more likely they'll get a lift from there on.
On the other hand I'm happy to walk

No.  Absolutely, no.  I conceal carry my gun quite often and even with that, still no.

Would NEVER 'accept' a 'ride' from a stranger even if he was reported to be a real good 'ride'.

No way, I wouldn't have accepted a ride as a man.  My personal safety is paramount and this type of activity is way too risky.
