Mileage definitely varies. Lol  a) I can't just not open my mouth b) I'm not usually alone but escorting around a little kid sometimes makes people feel more willing to say intrusive things to me, and I don't have a car. and c) I live above 3 bars and down the street from about 25 others, so there are drunks floating around sometimes (yuppie drunks, but still). And I'd much rather be here (with tons of witnesses, streetlights, security, etc) than anywhere I could go to get away from that particular population.

Not knocking those tactics, of course. The ways I get by probably wouldn't work for you either.
