So just hours ago, I had super long, shiny, but somewhat puffy hair that took more than a year to grow out. It shaped up my jawline wonderfully and was overall extremely good looking; another half year probably would have had it looking totally female, I could already put it in a ponytail and everything. Sadly, because of my extreme brow bone, I decided I had to have some sort of bangs, and I cut them. For the first time in my life, I really destroyed how my hair looked concerning my bangs, so I took it to the hairdresser. Needless to say, the hairdresser chopped everything off, from the sides, the back, everything to at least get an "even cut for the future" and now my hair is, all over, merely inches long; it's so masculine and ugly it's UNREAL there's NO possible way I look female with it or could ever until it grows back out. It's one of the worst haircuts in the world.

So I've decided to take the extreme coarse of probably cornrowing my hair, slapping a wig cap on it, and going with a good old lace front or some such. At the end of the day, I want hair like this (still pretty androgynous very male-or-female) - http://imagehost.vendio.com/a/35066893/aview/bringmethehorizon_olisykes.jpg - and so far, all I know to do is walk into a wig store and look for a wig that closest matches the style, color, and thickness/texture I want, but other than that, I'm lost. I less likely want to order offline, but if I have to, I have to. I'd much rather buy from a store though, as I can probably try it on and make sure the sizing fits.

Does anyone have any tips or anything I should look for? Can wigs be cut by a hairdresser pretty easily as long as the style is close to the original wig? Do cornrows damage the hair any? (I'm definatly looking to let my natural hair grow out under the wig!) Any certain brands, websites, or anything of info I should be heading in the direction toward? I simply do not know about any of this and it's my first time with a wig! I figured surely someone here knows about what to do, but then again, the only people I've ever seen who seem to truly know how to install a wig is them ghetto gals!

Thanks!

Wow... i'm at a loss of words  :o

:(

She should have known, that the shortest section of hair grows out the fastest... ignorance or scumbaggery, i don't know... but she sure is unprofessional.

But whenever you have bangs, they grow faster than the rest, at the expense of thinning other hair, although this mostly applies to female hairstyles, where the length difference between bangs and the long sections is a foot or more. So depending on how messed up your bangs were, they could've been razor-cut to make them lighter and wispier, or somehow evened out if that was necessary, but loping off everything goes against all logic.

While i'm not exactly in a position to help you buy the wig, i will help with almost everything else...

(i know a good company that makes high quality wigs and toupees, but those are mostly for people who have long-term hair problems, and probably not in your price range, but i will still post the link for other transwomen, if i'll be able to find it....I'm not a customer myself, but they seem to have well-designed and durable hairpieces for a wide variety of needs)

While i'm still a stranger on this site, it's probably not a good idea for me to "advertise" any product, but in my later posts, i will fill in any missing information, brand-names and such.

I should probably mention, that i have a hair problem of my own, indirectly due to not being able to smoke at this time (living with anti-smokers). A pathological head scratching habit has taken its place as a way of managing stress that makes me lose hair faster than it can grow back on its own. While anyone could tell me to just stop, i rarely notice until it's too late, and i see the strands of hair in my hand.

So i could definitely share with you the hair-regrowth regimen  :-*

The things i'll list here may not all apply to you, but i see this thread as a reference page for the future, for everyone that has a problem even remotely similar to yours or mine.

Ok...

Re: cornrows...

Not the best idea. For hair to grow, hair follicles in the scalp need both nutrients and stimulation. Poor blood flow is the #1 reason for age-related hair loss, and the body naturally tries to get rid of any hair that is stuck and immobile, or weighted down, the reason why hair extensions and weaves cause hair loss as well.

What i would suggest instead, for under the wig, is to use one of those plastic up-do things that most drugstores sell... it's a stretchy, zigzag-shaped type plastic band that circles your head and pulls hair up from around the edges.

Anything that it doesn't catch can be held in place with bobby pins that you can bend slightly to the curvature of your head.

The main reason for this is that you can take all of them out at the end of the day, and quickly put them back in in the morning. It is very important to be able to give your hair some rest at night. Also, at least twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, take a soft, gentle hair brush (round-tipped wood or plastic bristles), bend over (butt up, head towards the floor), and brush the scalp until it feels warm and tingly, and your face turns pink. That will bring fresh blood to your hair follicles, washing away toxins and bringing nutrients that will help hair grow.

A folk remedy from some country achieves something similar using an extract of hot peppers (steeping them in vodka or another cheap distilled spirit and using the resulting solution). I haven't tried it myself and don't know how long it takes to make out of dried peppers, but it does get the job done.

The next thing is to provide the right vitamins for the body to use in regrowing hair. Many companies sell hair growth vitamins, but myself i would recommend the powder sold by the same company that makes Spirutein protein shake mixes. It's quite effective, although you have to drink it with another of their shakes (Fruitein banana orange is the very best) to cut the taste. By itself, the hair growth shake is slightly bitter and has a chlorine-like aftertaste. But don't worry, it's all vitamins.

In addition to that, you can take a collagen supplement. NeoCell is a good brand, and Costco sells big bottles of the "collagen  I and III" formulation (bovine), which you can supplement with the same brand collagen II (chicken) from another store. Hyaluronic acid is a related thing, and when taken with collagen, helps skin and joints. Some people also take fish collagen, which is an even smaller molecule, but i'm just adding this for information.
For collagen to be properly absorbed and put to use, it's best to take it with vitamin C. Ester C is a non-acidic formulation that i recommend over the regular sour tablets, and Costco sells that in big bottles.
Biotin is another thing that helps hair and nails, best taken as soft gels (absorbs better).

Brazil nuts also have something in them that helps hair growth and thickness.

To summarize the above, one can prepare half a scoop of hair growth shake and half of some other flavor. I use water instead of milk to avoid tying up and deactivating certain vitamins, and blend using a hand held, pocket sized mixer (runs on 2 AA batteries) in a cup. Drink immediately, otherwise the mixture turns a little goopy after ~5 minutes.

For collagen, one can take 2 or 3 pills of collagen I&II (broken in half is good) + one capsule of collagen II + one pill of ester C (broken in half is good) + one softgel of biotin (optional for long term maintenance) + (optionally one capsule of Hyaluronic acid, more for skin and creaky joints)

Another thing is forgot, is JarroSil, a bio-available silica preparation, drops... it also helps skin, hair, nails and joins. It needs to be taken mixed into a small amount of distilled water. You can take it, or not... with the other stuff it's not really necessary.

Brazil nuts, you can eat a handful every day, but be sure to chew until they turn to puree... that way you get the most out of each nut. Any whole pieces pass thru the system undigested. Wash them down with a gulp of water.

With the right nutrients and scalp daily brushing, hair will grow as fast as an inch per month, while neglected hair usually grows only half or 1/4 as fast.

Another thing that helps hair grow faster is trimming it once a month, even a few millimeters. That helps jump start sleeping hair, but in your case, your hair isn't sleeping. Some holistic doctors recommend cutting hair while the moon is in Leo. I don't know why, maybe it's a certain point of the moon cycle. But if you ever need to check what moon sign it is, you can go on moonchart.org ...the time there is in UTC, but it's simple math.

I think i've probably listed everything there is to list.. please take care and if you have any questions, just ask :)

For people with hair loss: FYI, Rogaine does not and will not help with regrowing normal hair... it regrows thin, downy hair that will fall out as soon as the use of it is discontinued. Not that i've ever touched the stuff, but it's a well known fact.

OK Sweet look I cried :'( when I read your story. Please don't call us ghetto girls because we wear wigs.
( I took no offence, but others might.) Next, all I can wear is a wig for I am older and bald. There's a wig shop that I go to it is called "Wilshire Wigs." (Look them up on line) ;D yes wigs can be styled any you want it. However, the hair dresser must know how to work with it. this is for a synthetic wig. They also have real hair wigs which are much more user friendly but coast more money. I wish I could help more however good luck love you no matter what and theres nothing you can do about that!!! >:-)
Peace out kitten >^-^<
PS cornrolls can damage your real hair and make it fall out at the root.( be careful please)

Another thing i forgot to add, is you can switch to using clip-in extensions and hairpieces as your hair starts to grow out. You will be able to make them yourself, and a lot of girls in the goth scene and ones that go clubbing do that. For them, it makes more sense than expensive long-term extensions that you can't really remove.

One can get really creative, whether it's something crazy for a party, or something modest that can be worn to work. It is much cheaper to make those things yourself, and you can experiment with the kinds of clips you use, and layering the hair. Some girls even make bangs as a type of hairpiece, and use a hairband of some sort or a bandanna (or scarf) to cover. It's winter now, so maybe it's time for nice knit beanies too...

Sorry if it is not what you'd want to hear, i don't now, i'm just trying to be helpful and creative. ;)  Email me if you'll want to talk privately, i don't have enough posts to PM anyone. I'm mr.xx089 on yahoo :)

Stereotyping people who help people with wigs as ghetta gals isn't cool.

But to answer your question:

1. Go to a talented hair stylist and ask them what type of hair piece or wig would accentuate your facial shape. Wigs are designed to fit certain shapes of faces. What may look good on a model can be disastrous for you. Tell them you are transgender or tell them you are androgynous before hand tho. Because if you ask them while presenting male, they'll give you hair wig shapes that are masculine.

2. Typically, the cheaper the wig, the worse it will look. When someone tells me they spent a 100 dollars on a wig, I can tell. However, you don't have to spend 1000s either. My ex MTF girlfriend went to wigs.com and her wig looks like the real deal. She spent 350 dollars on it.  If you spend less then 150 bucks on a wig, it's going to look fake no matter what you do to it.

3. If you cannot afford a real hair wig, then go with a monofilament and lacefront wig. These wigs give the illusion that your hairs is coming from your scalp and not a cap. Also, the front bang line is a lot more convincing. You will spend more on a lacefront but its worth it.

4. Stay away from jet black or platinum blond wigs unless you are buying a real hair wig. Artificial black and blond wigs just looks very artificial. People will know you are wearing a wig if you get jet black or platinum blond. Black and blond whigs accentuated the monofilament shine in a wig and it'll give you away every time......and this is even with 500 dollar wigs. If you get a 100 dollar black wig, it'll be worse.

Do your research A LOT before buying a wig. Shop, research, study what you are going to buy. I cannot tell you how many times I went to a trans function and I could spot a wig from across a room and I know if I could spot a wig, so can others. If you aren't bothered by other people telling it's a wig then just go with a wig that at least accentuate your facial shape.

I've been looking for a wig and am a bit confused by the lace front wigs. Does the lace on the front of them need to be trimmed? After you do what you needto, do you need to glue it to your head?
It's not a lace front, but the wig that I've been looking at is:

http://www.wigs-us.com/angelique-large-jon-renau-wigs.html

It's described as an open/capless wig, any idea on what that is? I understand that a human hair wig would looks better, but is there any synthetic that looks natural?

A capless wig is a wig that does not have a full cap (like a hat with hair......like many wigs are designed as). They have small strips of fabric or a lighter fabric that connects the hair to the base of the wig. From what I understand these are ideal because they fit the shape of your head better and a lot cooler in the summer. I never dated anyone with a capless wig so I could be wrong..but i am pretty sure this is what it means.

About the lace front wigs. It all depends. My ex bought a 400 dollar lace frontwig and there was no need to trim or glue. The wig looked pretty decent and real to me. Later she bought a 3000 dollar lace front wig that required gluing but she could lift up the bangs and I swear to you it look like it was growing right out of her scalp.

I really don't know of any really intimately to give any advice on that.

Just make it a research assignment by exploring as many websites as possible. If you can only get artificial wigs, you do want to aim for monofilament and lace front. Anything less, you will be taking a chance that your wig will look like a wig. Many websites has videos where you can see the wig in real time as the seller is explaining the wig.

I think wigs.com has that feature.

Also, keep in mind that if you are fulltime, an artificial wig will last about 6 months before it begins to look frizzy. If you wear it part time it can last a couple years.

While online shopping is easy and discrete, it's not really the best way to get the right wig for you. It's certainly possible to find a good one that way, but if you go to a good wig salon, you'll be much more likely to be satisfied with the results. A good stylist can match a wig to your face, adjust the fit just right and even trim the wig to fit your face well. If you absolutely must shop online, I'd suggest first visiting one of the free virtual makeover sites (Instyle, Mary Kay, etc.), upload a good pic and get an idea of what colors and women's hairstyles look good on you. Use that as a guide in your wig shopping.

Yes, there's a vast range of quality in wigs and more expensive ones are often the best, but the most important thing is that it goes well with your face, coloration, and lifestyle, for that matter. I'm familiar with a lot of online dealers (including wigs.com), but you a low quality or inappropriate wig at any of them. The same goes for wig brand names. Even if you do buy online, it's wise to have a pro stylist fit it for you, though.
