As we gather with friends and family during the holiday season, we realize that their presence is often taken for granted. But imagine someone you love being taken away from you faster than any scream could ever be heard.

Picture what it would feel like waking up every day to live a lie in your body, based on the fear of someone else's ignorance, based on the fear for your own life.

"My silence will not protect me and neither will yours," said Carre Adams through a microphone at the 13th annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance, hosted by the Transgender Education Network of Texas, held Sunday evening at City Hall Plaza.

Adams, representing allgo, looked toward audience members holding glow sticks in memoriam and publically identified himself (for the first time) as "a black, queer transman."
