There are a lot of terms to know when it comes to gender identity.  As queer studies continue to grow more into the mainstream, the list lengths as to how individuals define themselves and frankly, I'm overwhelmed.  There's a transgender umbrella under which all of these terms fall and, although an extremely open-minded guy, I really don't get all of them.  Now, I know transsexualism originated out of the medical and psychological communities, labeling it a disease and relating it to gender identity disorder found in children.  And I know there is a difference between someone purely identifying as the opposite sex and actually wanting to become the opposite sex, which involves anything from hormone therapy to sex reassignment surgery, but not everything is simply blue and pink.

Just scrolling through a list on Wikipedia produces term after term of concepts that I have to really think about to grasp.  Although familiar with specific aspects of transgender life—transwoman, transman, androgyne—others leave utterly confused.
